A slightly eccentric bit of scouting history
TAHAWK replied to Cambridgeskip's topic in Scouting History
The cotton tartan cloth I bought to have the mums make into 33" x 33" neckerchiefs for Troop 83 was Wallace Tartan. Seemed to fit as we had a piper for a few years - one of the dads. Not that the rest of the district thought WE were eccentric. Never in the World ! -
The Guide to Advancement expressly provides for persons other than Merit Badge Counselors to instruct on Merit Badge topics. See B.S.A., Guide to Advancement (2015) at p. 50: "It is permissible for guest speakers, guest experts, or others who are not merit badge counselors to assist in the counseling process. Those providing such assistance must be under the direction of a registered and approved counselor who is readily available onsite, and provides personal supervision to assure all applicable BSA policies and procedures—including those related to BSA Youth Protection—are in place and followed."

Should BSA develop a "Classic Scouting"
TAHAWK replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
No official BSA syllabus teaches it - not for decades. Not in the handbooks for Scoutmasters or Patrol leaders. Aspects are mentioned in passing, but more time is given in SM basic to the relatively unimportant "three types of patrols" as is given (absolutely none) to the critical annual patrol planning conference. You may get a course at a "University of Scouting" or "Baden-Powell Institute" - if someone wants to do it. See, the Patrol method -- our most important method - is effectively optional. Think I'm wrong? List all the official consequences for the adults if they refuse to allow the Patrol Method. Must be consequences for ignoring our most important method, right? We'll wait. -
Why do you ask? Are you shocked by "negative" tones? If so, be prepared to be shocked again - here and in life in general. We are all - all - mortal clay, imperfections and all. I suggest that an unrealistic view of the operative values of others will tend to lead to even greater anger and frustration than a realistic view. If you really thought "they" meant all that stuff, what would your reaction be when the cases of beer came out at med-course at Scout camp? If you were the Scribe, you probably stopped taking pictures. Did you fall over in a faint? We lost an SE to faking membership numbers in 1926, and an SE two back faked membership to the extent that his successor, not being willing to do such things, took a 30% year-over-year hit. Ouch! People with grievances come here. Let's hear your proposed plan of operation with dealing with, say, the OP? The final arbiters are the mods, a remarkable tolerant bunch, and toleration is also a value.

Not my experience. There have been many who cared, even a few who stuck around. One has climbed to rarefied heights, giving me hope.

Could a 9-year-old join Scouts?

So much for Scouting Values. But, then, someone else told him this was the goal to work towards and forget Boy Scouting. He's just a Capo in the mob.

The state and local sales tax implications of selling by a non-profit from a fixed business site are a mess - did anyone care. Only if the $$ are big "enough " does anyone care. We have non-profit unincorporated associations. All you need to dd to a bunch or friends is a constitution and bylaws. Risky as compared to a corporation, but simple. There are 501©(3) unincorporated associations - or were when last I looked. Council has no authority to adjudicate ownership of property. Would a court issue process to seize the property? On what theory? Action to replevy 1000 Christmas trees? It can huff and puff, but imagine some DE coming to seize the cash box on his own. What else to do if you don't want to slice up the business? Finesse seems better.

So it's a good strategy. Nothing wrong with avoiding an obstacle as opposed to plowing through it.
-
Your strategy goes around the requirement that Council approve all independent Unit fund-raising projects

From the results, no one at Corporate seems to have the responsibility of even trying to insure consistency. _____________________________________________________ Not a conspiracy. Just many not very good at it. -
Your COR is a voting member of Council. The DE is a low-level employee of Council - for the moment. Have your COR ask the the DE's supervisor's supervisor what the DE is trying to pull.

They have said for decades that they exist to support the volunteer. With exceptions, they believe, and operate as if, they are totally in charge. I have seen written statements by SEs of that latter view.

His age would not stop reading the BSHB and learning/doing the things in it with some friends. -
Because before the bosses there was no "assembly line" or money to build one? The UAW was demanding forty-hours pay for a thirty-hour week just as Japan was conquering the automotive world. No shortage of stupid on either side of management/labor.

Perhaps because not all units, especialy those not formed yet, are not "established."

Recollections change with time. Went up to the San Bernardino Mountains for snow, but few Scouts (or adults) had the right boots to cold/wet. Flagstaff was not a practical distance - 462 miles from the church. Leave at 7PM and arrive at campsite (at 7050 ft elev.) at 2:30 AM, if no one crashed. Drove through 'da Flag once when there was 8' of snow on the ground. Still didn't have the right boots.

No one relied on state of mind in dressing us to walk to school in Stony Plain, Alberta in the Winter (-40 f several times). Watching balls of spit bounce off the ground was great fun and the "coat room" was almost as large as the classroom. -
OK, Barry. Forget the allegedly inapt analogy, They are all learning to lead by leading, some with more potential responsibility than others. If that is not going on, you are not using the Patrol Method. That does not preclude other learning from example. That is the rationale for the "Adult Association" method.

So I read you describing how your boys experienced leadership by leading - Cheer Master, Grub Master. The were, you say, taking responsibility, instead of merely observing other being responsible. Perhaps the point is to have a Beginner's section of the swimming area instead of only the "deep end."

A Mylar reflective blanket greatly increases the warming effect of a fire. which otherwise warms (by radiation) only the side facing the fire. If cold is a state of mind, please attend our next Klondike here in NE Ohio in your swim suit. -

That overextended ground sheet really tests the waterproofing of the tent floor. Since floors of many tents start out barely waterproof (1000 mm minimum standard) and inevitably go down from there, trapping water between the ground sheet and the floor and applying the weight of a Scout typically pumps the water through the floor. Buit as noted, even the most diplomatic suggestion can be suggested, as it was at our last IOLS course. But we brought several LARGE sponges to bail out the resulting ponds.
