evolution:BIG BANG (there was noise?) and everything came into existence. CREATIONISM: God spoke (there was noise.) and every thing came into existence. Therefore God's name is Big Bang. Evolution: the universe will eventually stop expanding and will collapse. God said the the heavens and the earth shall pass away, but I will remain. All the stuff in the middle-just details. God=3 evolutuion=2 therefore God wins again. Yeah Judy the religious icon of a dead civilization-maybe now we know why.(This message has been edited by stlscouter)

I have seen many, many, many women in the BSA and in the OA in particular however, (and there is always a however) when it comes to the ceremonial teams...based on "American Indian" traditions etc (I know some present day tribes have women leaders)but..

Greetings- Best advice I ever got was to get the yearly roundtable planning guide and ask, ask, ask people where "experts" were to give presentations on the monthly topics. Your DE is the next best source of the things that are needed to make the RT run smoothly. Go get 'em.

welcome- have a seat at the fire-just don't sit on somebody's campaign hat or hodog as you sit down.

Welcome to the group-be careful when you sit down it might be on somebody's campaign hat or hotdog.

Scouter roles for 18-21 year olds
stlscouter replied to stlscouter's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I am aware of the rule-but my question is, I guess, how does one go about changing the rule. My interest stems from the fact that I know of several ubder 21 scouts who have returned from Iraq and I believe they are good role models and should be given the opportunity to give back to scouting. Opinions? Wisdom? Ideas? How about a poll on the idea? -
We have many Scouts in the 18-21 yr old category and aside for the role as an ASM should these Scouts be allowed to sit on District Committees with the same authority as post 21 yr olds? District Eagle Boards of Review?

maybe now Weird Al and Judy whatshername wlii be able to bask in the full glory of the spotlight. Is it possible for a person born with only one hand to both a musician and an accordion player? What a tragedy that they can never reach the pinicle of human achievement. Let's sue the BSA. VIVA LA KAZOO!

Even with all of the translations etc and citing verses and their interpertations I still feel the need to go back to the place where God decides that it is not good for man to be alone and then provides a woman-not another man. In this context by one translation Adam "knew" Eve. Others translate that as merely hving relations or having intercourse-knowing someone is alot more involved than just physical relations and IMHO getting to know someone of the opposite sex is a lot more difficult and challenging than underanding someone of your own. Maybe God wishes us to truly challenge ourslves in that way and at the same time provide a vehicle (children) to pass along the best of both sexes.

Fuzzy-creationism therefore cannot be "intellegent design" However, perhaps we could enlist those who have "theatres of the mind" to have the performances of the aforesaid instruments so that we could isolate the sound of one hand clapping while the other hand pat it's owners back and thereby witness the "Sounds of Silence". Is there a difference between avowed accordion players, bagpipers and those that play dueling banjos and those who are "normal" with just this one proclivity? Is it inhertited or is it learned and can it be changed or stopped?....I wonder?
-
PETA and the ASPCA have been called because it is very dificult to tell the differece between bagpipes on the distance and swinging a cat by the tail over your head. But then again is a bagpiper a musician or just a bagpipe player and is there any dirty meaning or image in the bagpipe (pornography perhaps?)? There is something immoral in squeezing a dead bladder without the owner's permission And just because Jesus did not mention the sinfulness of either the accordion or the bagpipe I think he cover it when he said go and sin no more-after all the crowd was about to throw stones-a behavior some people want to do when in the presence of bagpipers and accordionists. I believe tortdog could add to the legal ramifications if he were to weigh in.

Actually...God did allow the use of horns and the smashing of clay jars to destroy Jericho..BUT no accordions. Does that mean that God discriminates? Perhaps. But then again I guess that those who play with their accordian in the privacy of their own bedroom would claim it is nobody elses business. I fear for the negative effect on the children. May be playing in the closet is a better option...can anyone really say that playing an accordion is immoral? Or is just owning one and being the object of scorn in your community enough. Will the ACLU take up this cause and demand that the National Endowment for the Arts fund accordion players at the same rate as other groups? In the words of the great philosopher A. E. Newman "What, me worry?"
-
seriously..back to the BIBLE..it says in Psalms to make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Can an accordion truly make a "joyful" noise? And why aren't there any accordions in a marching band? Does anyone know where I can get a download of an accordion version of "Amazing Grace" or "The Star Spangled Banner"? And why do you know this information?(This message has been edited by stlscouter)

Is The Boy Scouts of America Public or Private?
stlscouter replied to berkshirescouter's topic in Issues & Politics
I realize that the passage by the Senate only sends it to committee but my understanding is that the HOR passed its version overwhelingly also. I submit that the compromises may be very small, abeit important. I also understand the local option as presented but I pose this (other threads have skirted this) but; by changing the policy at any level what will the gain/loss be 1. membership wise 2. financially 3. public confidence/support/accountability. Just a question. By extension; If one keeps expandig the argument where does the goverment support end and what by definition is government support- My proposal would be to exempt the BSA because it is non-profit. Do the same for all other non-profit orgs. Could one suspect that if National BSA changes policy, the next set of lawsuits will be application and inclusion of the BSA under Title lX? Since for some it is not the changing of these rules or policy it is a Utopian Vision as guided by communism (small c)eg. give all you have take only that which the state dictates you need. Ridiculous LOL Can't happen here..or could it? Random thought-sorry. I'm also reminded that those who regularly pass laws and judge us in the courts exempt themselves from those very laws. (Congress and the Supreme Court are not bound by the 1964 Civil Rights Act) And Medicare and other federal payments are made to faith based hospitals, who allow doctors to not do abortions. Or why do church vans and buses display a handicap tag and get to park in special places when the driver or the passengers (usually old people from age discriminatory retirement villages)are not handicapped? Again random thoughts-sorry.(This message has been edited by stlscouter) -
Is The Boy Scouts of America Public or Private?
stlscouter replied to berkshirescouter's topic in Issues & Politics
Gern-I don't know how to calculate the value of good deeds Other threads have discussed the value of the training the government gets by helping to setup A. P. Hill (a 40,000 person city for a 10 day use period) and the contribution of$20 million by the BSA over the years. FEMA etc would only this opportunity if there were a major evacuation or tradedy somewhere and then it wouldn't be for training. aside-The ACLU and the courts do look at the votes when a law has been passed, to some degree to get the sense of the strength (depth) of the support it had to become law. That being said, I believe the ACLU will take pause before filing another suit on this issue. By the way, The Eastern Missouri Chapter of the ACLU elected a(n) (former) Eagle Scout as its president over the weekend. Ray Hartman. I really do have trouble with the balancing act of the good things that the BSA does against the percieved slights some folks feel by not modifyig their behavior but rather trying to change the BSA -
Is The Boy Scouts of America Public or Private?
stlscouter replied to berkshirescouter's topic in Issues & Politics
Coming from a Canadian writer- My understanding of the Senate Bill is that it passed 98-0 (2 abstentions, one republican -one democrat) and that the wording is such that the BSA will only recieve that support as has been traditional. It is iinteresting that Kennedy, Boxer, Feinstein, Clinton et al all voted for this amendment. Our Local council has been doing the Scouting for Food since it's inception-last tear 2.1 Million cans and consolidated these collections at local firehouses where they were boxed and up until last year picked up by the National Guard (this year the Guard unit was in Iraq and not available)for delivery to the various food pantries. You object to this use of government resources? -
TJ. PS Since the timeframe as to where and when the conversations took place and since the scouting format is where they met and since 17 yrs old is under the age of consent I see no reason I should be jumped on for the 3 points I listed. TJ your further explanation might have been useful in your first post. I do not consider the use of the word pedophile/homosexual to be interchangable No where in my post did I even suggest my personal belief concerning gay people etc.-you assume. What I did say involves what I am expected to do under the circustances-and for me, my legal obligation. Incidently, even if a report is found to be "wihout basis" the record stays in a dats base for 5 years and if no further reports are made the record is sealed but not expunged. These reports also include reports of child abuse, neglect, endangerment harrassment and the like.

Experts: Scouts unprepared for Jamboree
stlscouter replied to cajuncody's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
fscouter Where did you here or read that the secret service made the scouts pour out their water bottles? I never saw that before. I' sure that the event planner has had to find air-conditioned rooms and a meeting center for several thousand folks however, that's not quite the same as building a city for 40,000 people from nothing that lasts 10 days. -
..a 24 year old "gay" interacting with a "strong brotherly bond" toward a 17 year old and nobody's pedophile alert flag went up. Curious. As a scouter and a profesional educator I see several things I have to question 1. G2SS rule of 4 was not followed 2. Any conversation you had with this 17 year old should have included "Have talked to your parents about your feelings?", "Have you talked to your school counselor about this?" and "Have you talked to your preist, preacher or youth minister about these feelings?" I realize you interest in this young person, but, by law, in my state, teachers, counselors, nurses and principals are required to report the kind of contact you had to the Division of Family Services who then decides the propriety of the contact. If I don't report and it becomes known that I had knowledge-I lose my license. I cannot make the judgement of the propriety they do. I, IMHO think you may have done this young man a disservice. Years ago when I was a summer camp staffer the OA ceremony involved running the "line" and with a cupped hand "tap" fairly forcefully in the middle of the chest so as to force the candidate back into the waiting arms of Arrowmen. The call out still involves running the line but the Arrowman stops, points and yells "You have been chosen" Lyda J I am interested as to how a tap out could be held a a camporee and how do you handle the election and insure that the boy will be there to be tapped out? Incidentally, our Council has 2 OA lodges and one has an OA winter banquet dinner(700-800 Arrowmen) is where our Vigil Candidates are called out. Our other lodge calls out their Vigil candidates at their Fall reunion at their Saturday BBQ dinner by letter.

Whe I read the original post I didn't know you meant something besides selling popcorn-Scouting for Food, Friends of Scouting, Blue and Gold banquet, Day camp, and of course the 6 months of getting ready for PINEWOOD DERBY. Just kidding.

I like mine from a blue granite pot-leaded-black-no grounds please, by Golly.

BrenAllen et al- I am the Eagle Board Chair for our district and yes we DO require a scout to be in complete uniform because it is an ouward sign that fulfills a part of the "Scout Spirit" requirement. Yes, we have turned boys away, usually with the aside "when so and so is done with his review why don't you ask to borrow his pants?" Now, about the shoes...

OA ceremonies and church sponsored units
stlscouter replied to stlscouter's topic in Issues & Politics
example - if you throw a bowling pin in the air and stand under it as it comes down-truth wins! but was there any logic involved? I could tell you what the Scout told me when he did it but I'm still scratching my head(This message has been edited by stlscouter)
