  2. Thanks for all your hard work at the Fall Reunion. Congats again for having the first three-son ceremonial team in the lodge. Oh and yeah, congrats on the beads-sorry about your critter though.
  3. 9a.enlist allies to spread only negative images of your enemy. 9b. file class action suit against them and try to finacially ruin them. Make sure your attorney can parse even the word "it.
  4. Of course there are-just as there are Atheists in every other group-including, undoubtedly in the BSA. And play the denigration card only when it suits their own purpose.
  5. I suppose that feeling denigrated because one can not be the best citizen without believing in GOD, an Atheist is further denigrated when they find out that they can only "be all you can be" if they are in the Army which keeps them from being the "few and the proud" because you can only be that in the Marines. And certainly an Atheist would not allow themselves to be buried in a National Cemetary where they would be surrounded by row, upon row, upon row of white headstones with a cross or Star of David or other religious symbol paid for by the US Government.
  6. Reaffirmation of the Position of the Boy Scouts of America on Duty to God From the BSA National Executive Board, June 12, 1991: Be it resolved that the following reaffirmation of the position of the Boy Scouts of America relating to the duty to God be, and hereby is, enacted that the bylaws, rules and regulations, and literature of the Corporation reflect this reaffirmation accordingly. In 1985, America celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Since 1910, eighty million Americans have subscribed to the Scout Oath and the Scout Law, which have stood the test of time. The National Executive Board of the BSA proudly states, through its mission statement, that the values which the organization strives to instill in young people are those based upon the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. A Scout pledges: "On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law...." The first Boy Scouts of America *Handbook for Boys*, published in August 1911, declares that "..no boy can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God." (page 215) The latest edition of the Boy Scout Handbook, published in 1990, reads: "A scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others." (page 561) While not intending to define what constitutes belief in God, the Boy Scouts of America is proud to reaffirm the Scout Oath and its declaration of duty to God. The following statements are additional information on the BSA position: The Boy Scouts of America has always been committed to the moral, ethical, and spiritual development of our youth. Scouting is not a religion, but duty to God is a basic tenet of the Scout Oath and Law. Scouting does not seek to impose its beliefs upon others who do not share them. Virtually every religion is represented in Scouting, and the BSA does not define or interpret God. That is the role of the Scout's family and religious advisors. Scouting respects those who do not share its beliefs and it would not ask others to alter their faith in any fashion in order to become Scouts. They too are free to follow their own beliefs. Rather, the BSA membership believes that the principles set forth in the Scout Oath and Law are central to the BSA goal of teaching the values of self-reliance, courage, integrity, and consideration to others. Scouting may not be for everyone, but for eight decades, Scouting has provided meaningful programs and adventure to more than eighty million young people in the United States. What in the above statement denigrates an atheist? They are not even mentioned. You have not been defamed. However, comparing the BSA with the KKK is denigrating.
  7. reading some of the other threads- not only unappreciated but the most difficult is the one YOU are doing now-"nobody understands or appreciates what I do" and I'm the only one who can do it. Sound familiar?
  8. Grape Nehi and peanuts with a side of Moonpie- Of course Double Bubble is the gum of choice- next was the BIG piece in baseball cards.
  9. so is there a difference between an atheist (no who denies the existance of god) and an aniti-theist (one who works against God)?
  10. Another great story about another great scout doing just what needed to be done...with humilty. Thank him and his leaders for me and the scouts I work with.

  12. Congrats on the neckwear! Trusting you'll be a sail and not an anchor:) Didja get a tatoo yet?
  13. Never-saw a "NO atheists allowed" sign anywhere at any scout function. Collusion for the purpose of denigrating the BSA out of existence is unethical.
  14. Merlyn says "Freedom of association doesn't include freedom from criticism, and the BSA has plenty to criticize. For example, their wholly-owned subsidiary Learning for Life teaches ethics to atheist students - how can LFL, owned by an organization that had to be threatened with lawsuits before ending their practice of having public schools discriminate against atheists on their behalf, and which still denegrates atheists, pretend to teach ETHICS to atheists?" I believe the DRP states a positive..believe in a higher power-NOT the negative... "Atheists need NOT apply". That denigrates no one. Denigration is not the same as discriminating. For a person who amasses data bases and shares them (with glee, appearently) with groups who seek to denigrate the BSA and chooses not to get into the really tough business of teaching ethics to youth-I would ask can you teach ethics to an atheist?
  15. I teach art and in my classroom are the requirements for art, pottery, sculpture and basketry MB's. Yes I do remind students that (Girl scouts too) I can sign off MB requirements and am a MB counselor. And yes some of my projects are processes in the book, hmmmm just worked out that way.

  17. "Your statements are somewhat difficult to parse and I'm not certain what it is you are really trying to say. So please forgive me if I am wrong here, but it seems to me that you are convinced that there is some kind of inherent conflict between religion and science. I'm sorry you feel that way, because I see no conflict at all. If that is your worldview, then I (and/or others) will never be able to convince you otherwise." Forgive me if my postings here seem to be difficult to parse. Maybe this is better. I find very little conflict between religion and science. I was trying to address those here who find that science can be devoid of the context of religious influence. That is, ethics, morals and the "chicken/egg" discussion. If, yes if, (the largest word in the English vocabulary) we start and stay with one simple point in the creationism/evolution debate, -"What existed before the big bang and if anything where did it come from?". Perhaps the answers to these questions will the help answer Merlyn's original post for itself. Nothing about dinosaurs, humans, fruit flies or anything else-let step one be step one. I find absolute randomness contains the idea that something has to be "doing" the random. What is it and where did it come from to be random?
  18. Einstein gave use E=MC2 GREAT! and the energy came from where(?) or the matter came from where(?) and allof this is part of a greater theory. the unified field theory and gravity and time and weaker particles and dark matter and string theory, Hawking is still working on it. The everything theory still remains a name and not even a hypothesis has been proposed for critical examination or..."proof". The idea that one question begets even more questions-how quaint. Even the BIBLE acknowledges that your questions will be answered on the last day. As in "your eyes will be opened..." I don't discount science, never have, never will, but when science refuses to acknowledge the questions of non-scientists with the aloof flip of the hand or the sactamonious you just wouldn't understand. Creationists (not literalists) can assume the same posture. edited part-and about the interference by scientists and human manipulation and with evolution-not ever on this scale as in the past 20 years not even by Joseph Mengala(This message has been edited by stlscouter)
  19. Momma wasn't happy the year I was in the woods 43 weekends out of 52 that included one week Woodbadge, 1 week JLTC and 2 weeks Summer Camp. I cut back, I didn't get to do Woodbadge the next year.(This message has been edited by stlscouter)
  20. I have had the opportunity to design several (many) troop, district, Woodbadge and Jambo t-shirts for "class B" uniforms and my understanding from Co is that the logos, the fleur de lis and or BSA were non copyrighted and should be used thereby making it "offical". That aside-what about folks who take their tan shirts to the cleaners and have them starched and pressed (and what about the "military creases"). Personally, I like the starch because the shirts don't stain nearly as badly and you can ALMOST wear them a week at summer camp without being to smelly.
  21. FB One of the great books worth reading and understanding is LUTHER'S SMALL CATECHISM with explanations. Got me and has supported me on my road of faith.
  22. Just as we find non total agreement in the links here about what exactly creationists believe and what science professes. Science theorizes certain things and if new evidence comes along it changes the theory-fair enough. But as I have tried to state several times, why does science have no theory about what was before the bang?, why does time go in only one direction?. Nobel, Einstein and other super scientists gave us ways to destroy everything but not one way to create anything. Let me ask this -if the scientific theory of evolution is correct and evolution takes place in infinitesimal stages over long periods of time what happens to the natural selection process when science interferes? For example-invitrofertilzation interferes with the natural selection of conception or rather non-conception. The genome project is identifying certain genetic factors that can be "corrected" or call it genetic engineering. Abortion eliminates millions from the gene pool. None of the above adds to the diversity of the species. So scientists are interfering with evolution to a good end?
  23. And yes some volunteers wear a blue blazer with the pin on crest, grey pants when doing things like Eagle Recognition Day or Eagle Boards of Review and Scout Sunday
