  1. Eagle, I agree there has to be a better way. This year, my better 1/3 was the popcorn coordinator. She filled everything out on the Trails End page. Created spread sheets for every scout - the whole enchilada. At the end, the Trails End site figured out everything, including how much was owed to council for every option the troop chose. If everything was turned in on time, then the troop would receive back that small % owed them from council. It was time consuming for my wife, but we would have had to send a check for just over what was owed the council. However, our council doesn't do it that way. My question is: does any council do it from the Trails End web site? BD
  2. Just a question about the San Diego situation... How much money has the San Deigo council spent on improvements? If the city cancels the lease b4 the end of the contract, would they have to re-imburse the council for improvements? Also, I believe I read that other groups were not denied use of this property, they just needed to schedule their use with the Scout office, is that correct? Under the headlines banner on this web site, I have seen many articles in newspapers calling on folks to support Scouting. It's about time!! BD
  3. I guess there's always Twinkies... I've been told they are not made of anything natural, I think they're all preservatives. That should make campouts a lot easier.. let's see... 6 twinkies per kid/per meal...hmmm BD
  4. Now more than ever: "Eet mor chikn" The chick-fil-a bovines would appreciate it! bd(This message has been edited by Big_Dog)
  5. Achilleez- Just a thought, " I don't believe there is such a thing as bad guys.." Try watching film from the Charles Manson event. Look into his eyes as he talks to the reporter and if you don't see evil, let me know. BD
  6. Captainron- Can you imagine the response a Scouter would get on a dating board if he were truly honest. Let's see- - gone camping at least one weekend a month with the scouts and scouters. - gone to a weekly meeting (sometimes 3 per week) - gone to every training that can be found. - gone to roundtable once a month - gone to hang around with other ASM's and work on scout stuff. - most of my money is spent on scout stuff. - boxes and boxes of Trails End popcorn around the house I'm sure you get the picture. I wonder if they would even let a Scouter post? BD
  7. SMT376 - Are you sure that was Santa and not the United Way? Sorry, just a small attempt at humor! Our CO, (hereby know as Santa) is donating a building for us a new Scout hut. Popcorn sales were good enough that all of our Scouts went to the Council Scout Shop and got full Class 'A' uniforms. That was cool! As we are a new troop, tonight we will conduct our first BOR's for several Scouts ready for Tenderfoot. All in all, it's been a great holiday season. BD
  8. Scouts: Roses: We started a new troop here, the old one had pretty much died out. New SM, 2 ASMs, full committee, excited CO. Troop is picking up new scouts. So,... I decided to see if I could help the pack. It pretty much died out last year also. It quit having meetings in Feb. Now: new CM, CC and full committee. Went to the Lions club and got them fired up about supporting the cubs. Future looks pretty good here, Lord willing! Thorns: Hassles with getting the word out. I know you have to let it grow, but I'm impatient, I want to see boys and parents involved in this great lifestyle that is Scouting. Personal: Thorns: If I listed them all, you would all be crying. It's been a rough year! Roses: God still loves me! Merry Christmas Big Dog
  9. NJ I agree, it doesn't sound very trustworthy. Whatever happened to just being straight-forward - say what you mean and mean what you say. If the Philly council wants to allow avowed homosexuals to be leaders, do it. Break off from BSA and just do it. Don't be mealy-mouthed, don't try to deceive folks about your intent, jump one way or the other. My ole granpappy used to say that the only thing straddlin' a fence will get you is a sore rear end. (not exactly like that, but...) bd
  10. Benny - Don't move on, just learn to adjust. When you pose a question, just read about the first page. Page two on is where it starts getting stinky... There's still a lot of good knowledge in here, and it's worth the effort for me to glean what I can. Maybe what we need is to get together around a good campfire with a hot cuppa joe! bd
  11. YeeeeeeHawwwww! Way to go troops! Did I hear that one of our soldiers was about to drop a grenade down that hole b4 he saw something? That could have saved a lot of trouble. I hope he doesn't come to the states, he might get Johnny Cochrane as his defender or something. Something else I wonder, why didn't he come out fighting? Is that suicide thing where you take as many with you as you can only good for peons? If he were a true believer in that stuff about virgins waiting for you in heaven (or wherever it is you go), wouldn't that have been better than that rat-hole he was hiding in? Anyway, here's to the hope Bin Ladin is quickly to follow and our troops can come home to the hero's welcome they so richly deserve!!!!! bd
  12. I started to suggest kiss and make up, but that's a whole 'nother thread... Merry Christmas, bd
  13. Hi all, As some of ya'll know, I'm in a pretty new troop. About 9 scouts now and threatening to gain about 4 more next month. We're excited. The SM told me (I'm committee chair) that several scouts will be ready for the first BOR in a week or two. I've explained what a BOR is to the committee and told them I would try to compile a list of sample questions to be a basic guideline. Now, I know it's not a re-testing of the Scout, and I don't intend for this list of ?'s to be a dogma for the committee members to follow, but I know you folks are bound to have some great questions you like to ask at a BOR. So if you'll share I'll be glad to listen. Thanx, bd
  14. Bob, I may have a unique kind of outing fixin' to happen. For background - this troop is just a few months old and none of the boys were in cub scouts, so this is pretty much all new to them. None of our families have a lot of money to spend, so we decided to let whatever the boys sold in popcorn go to buying uniforms and start paying for summer camp. Well, they did pretty well. So... the first activity in Jan. is a shopping trip. The nearest scout shop is about an hour away and the whole troop, leaders and all, are going to buy complete uniforms. From the caps to the socks, we'll be in Class A's. The campouts - this weekend: ropes course - are much more fun than shopping, but it will be cool to have everyone in uniform! bd
  15. Just a quick interjection - Did ya'll catch the article about "Scouts reaching out to minorities"? Nice pic of two fine looking young lads in uniform. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/gwinnett/1203/08scouts.html Nice article about scouting. It's good to hear positive news about Scouting. bd
  16. Thanx, wingnut.... that was the one... bd
  17. About 10 years ago, when I was just getting into Scouting with my kids, someone at work showed me a paper that had the requirements for citizenship in the universe. This was b4 I could really appreciate the fun of it. It had requirements like: create life and show something... I can't remember hardly any of it. If anyone has a copy of this, please send it to me!! thanx bd
  18. Eamonn, just heard that a family that owns several Dairy Queens here might have some up for sale. I really just posted this so that the thread will come up again in the todays active topics. I've enjoyed reading this one more than any other. ya'll keep 'em coming!! bd
  19. Hunt, If the Bible is riddled with errors, then there is no common ground to debate this issue. If you can pick and choose what is and is not in error, then it is not of much worth. This just becomes an endless re-hashing of what you think and what I think. (it seems we have arrived there) I believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and as for possessing the absolute revealed Word of God, you can buy it at Wal-mart. I do not think I have all the answers, heck, I don't even know all the questions, and I know I'm not without sin. But without a guidebook that contains the will of God, we're just spinning our wheels. Well, 'nuff said for me, it's back to getting lads involved in this great program that is Scouting. bd
  20. NJ, You, of course, are correct. The answer to all of your questions is no. Understand, I had just come home from church when I read Crewgirls post and I was in a Yahweh frame of mind. I was thinking the God of Issac and Abraham. So, when she commented about knowing Gods' Word, I assumed that was the God of whom she spoke. Yahweh has pretty much made his feelings about the act of homosexuality clear, (old or new testament)so I should have asked of which God she spoke. I'll strive to be more precise in the future. bd
  21. "Yes I know that not everyone will follow his word. Who is to judge what is "natural" or "un-natural"? How 'bout we leave out the "Who"? Since you say not everyone will follow His word, let's look at His word. Read Romans 1:26-27, then let me know what you think God says about 'natural' and 'un-natural'. Please don't think I'm jumping on you, I just want to know your thoughts are on these scriptures!!?! bd
  22. I love this place!!! Jimmyd's thread 'quick yes or no....' 44 posts later, we're way off subject again. DS post 'I'll be around....' 14 posts on that simple statement... I'm finding myself here more and more, need to quit hanging around and go camping bd
  23. When the high during the day is 107 and it cools down at night to 86, that's not reallllllly all that cool. Fire ants like your clean clothes, too. Latrines have a real purpose. No matter what boys tell you, after they've hiked/played/worked all day, they'll eat the cabbage in a dirt burger. It takes a big dog to weigh 300 pounds. Webelos parents can be a lot of fun when they discover the joys of camping - Boy Scout style. Never try to make dumplings in a vegetable soup. (the lads nicknamed it beef dump) When a scout starts volunteering information about his moms tatoos, shut down that conversation quickly. The joy of hoisting a brand new troop flag for a brand new troop. This is what fun is all about, wish I had done this as a kid!!! bd(This message has been edited by Big_Dog)(This message has been edited by Big_Dog)
  24. Zahnada - thanx for the laugh, I think that would be funny.. dare I say.... wonder if they dress him up like Custer??? Talk about tomahawk chop..oooh o ohhh ooohh.. sorry that's kinda rude, but I guess maybe that's how some of them feel...
