  1. TP- You da man! How I wish I had been involved with Scouts as a lad! Hate to break it to some of y'all, but chickens do not magically appear in the grocers freezer. Somehow, having to hunt down your own supper puts it in a different light. I heard enough soccer moms got together to put an end to the chicken hunt. bd
  2. NJ- Then there's the story of the Texas Aggies that bred a free roaming chicken that had four legs. What with drumsticks being so popular. Bo Pilgrim stopped by one day to inquire, "how do them chickens taste?" We don't know they replied, they're too fast to catch. Speaking of catching chickens, any chance Scouts will bring back the 'catch your chicken and cook it for supper' activity? bd
  3. It seems we hear so much negative lately! From Councils having to sell camps, United Way organizations dropping Scouting, San Diego and Philly jumping on us, enrollment down, so on and so on. It's time to share good news. One year ago, this District was in pretty bad shape. We now have a DE who works his rear off and the district is starting to get the volunteers to run it like it should. (new round table commissioner) Had the best roundtable last month I've been to. New cub leaders starting to show up. We met at a council camp in a bldg that volunteers had just remodeled, it was great. Troop is now 8 months old. We started with 7 lads, now have 14 registered. 4 leaders going to SM fundamentals in a few weeks. JLT coming up. Our CO just Monday gave us a building for a new scout hut. Excitement high here in the heart of Texas. The Pack in our town wasn't dead, but the heartbeat was very faint! Now have a full committee of people excited about a program that can involve the whole family. Quote from one parent: "We don't have to sit on a sideline, the family can be involved!" Pack committee is committed to doubling the size of the pack next year. Now it's your turn, share with us good things you see happening! YiS BD
  4. Wheeler, My first thought about the post is: which happened first, the fall of communism in Russia, or the effeminization of the American male? The Bible concept will require looking into. bd
  5. Gosh, I haven't posted in awhile, I bet I'm starless!! bd
  6. It seems we're trying to mix tradition with requirement. But if you stop and think about "bridging", then what would cubs that are not going on to the troop level "bridge" to? A bridge spans a gap, if they aren't going on to the troop, the bridge would lead to nothing. We have members from the troop ( or troops as the case may be) on the other side to receive them. It wouldn't make sense for some cubs to cross and have no one to receive them. Just my thought... bd
  7. Welcome! Be sure to check out official positions and statements at scouting.org. Then sit back and get ready to get an ear full from this forum as I know there is plenty of opinion to go around. bd
  8. I don't know if it was for fundraising or just an endorsement, but I saw where some scouting entity asked Barney Franks to sign something??? I still think Red Green would be good, but I think I'm about the only guy in Texas that watches him! Bd
  9. Mike- My prayers are with you, the troop, and the family. Having lost my 18 year-old son last June in an auto accident, I can feel their pain. I especially pray for the dad, as one dad to another. I can't begin to imagine what he's putting himself through!! Like the old gospel song says: "We'll understand it better, by and by..." bd

Phil - I believe you meant cheek? I've yet to meet a tongue in check on this forum!!!!! bd
  11. Achilleez: I have been to the great white north. Left Dallas, Tx in July, it was 107 degrees. Got to Calgary, it was 58 degrees. Like to froze my you-know-what off!!! It was BEAUTIFUL country. God did a great job building Canada! bd
  12. Eamonn, Wasn't that you wanting to buy a Dairy Queen? It doesn't snow much in Tx, shucks it doesn't really get all that cold down here unless you're up on the caprock when a norther blows in. I think I could find that lady that was reportedly wanting to sell off some of her Dairy Queens... bd
  13. When a charter is FROM A PUBLIC SCHOOL, the atheists in that school system ARE being made to charter a unit. So when does that mean anything? The gov't forces many of us through the use of tax dollars to do things we're opposed to. I, as a Christian, abhor the use of tax dollars to perform 1st, 2nd, 3rd term abortions. But the gov't don't care, they do it anyway. Welcome to the club... bd
  14. Big E: Whatever are you doing living in Ca.? YOU should be in Texas, big boy! I like someone not afraid to kick that hornet's nest. YiS bd
  15. One of the Biblical Proverbs says, Never get into an argument with a fool, because a by-stander won't know which is which. (loosely paraphrased) I guess anyone would do well to heed this... bd
  16. Merlyn- Do you have something in your life that truly brings you joy? I'm not trying to be mean or sarcastic, I just hope bashing Scouting is not the highlight of your life. Were you ever in Scouts, and if so, did you enjoy some of the experiences? Hope you have a great weekend... bd

  18. NJ- nah, I probably wouldn't thump him, but if an instructor was that openly antagonistic, I would probably just change courses. Life is too short to be in an argument all the time! BTW - it's good to hear you think the country is swinging the other way. I believe it's the same thing that liberals think the press has a conservative bent while the conservatives think there's a one-world liberal plot to the rule the world behind the media. I think it's good to stop at times and remember just how good and fun Scouting can be. And NJ, if you're ever in Central Texas, stop by the campfire. We'll discuss life in general over hot cobbler and a big 'ol scoop of Blue Bell ice cream! Truly YiS bd
  19. NJ- I confess, I thought it was funny at first. But I've changed my mind! Living in a land that seems to be swinging toward having no respect for the things I hold dear, ie God, the American Flag, hot dogs and apple pie, I just wish I had been the Marine. bd
  20. Wow, I'm glad I read thru this entire post b4 I made any comment, as a joke or not, about the little rainbow knot! BD
  21. The answer is: 42 (all you hitchhiker fans) bd
  22. Maybe the E-gals need to talk to the Philly City council about re-thinking their stand against Scouts. It might be an omen or something?.. But, I'm a Cowboy fan... Do like Donovan, though - maybe a trade for Quincy? How 'bout them Cowboys???? bd
  23. And: No one is so worthless that they can't be used as a bad example. ps, you can't hijack a thread that had no point in the 1st place bd
  24. Remember: no matter where you go, there you are!
