Okay, you were all right! I got my copy and my boys and I watched it last night. It WAS good! The thing that amazed me was that I thought I was buying the movie for me and my boys (13,14,16) would think it silly. But they really got into it, especially my two youngest. They enjoyed the interworkings of the troop and liked the familiarity of their troop to the movie's troop. But what amazed them the most, I think was the bridging of generations of Boy Scouts. They were fascinated to see a Movie made "umpteen years ago" (1966) about scouts and that it's timeframe was in the thirties. And those boys did the same things that my boys are doing today. And as the movie progressed, it got close to the generation of boys that my father, their gradfather, was involved, so they feel they saw a glimpse of what "Grandpa did" too. In fact, my middle boy called his grandfather whent he movie was over and started asking questions about what he had done. It opened a whole different realm that I even expected with my boys! I only have one complaint.....why can't the world be like that again? Tthansk so much for suggesting the movie!

Our troop will be playing laser tag. We are meeting as a group of friends without uniforms and have made it clear to all involved that this is not a scout event. Then after laser tag we are convining for an overnight game night.

All I can say, as I wipe a tear from my eye, "Wow!" We must NEVER forget that peace is worth fighting for. MAy God continure to bless our nation as we not only defend her, but others who aren't able to. We are truely blessed to live in this country with all the freedoms we enjoy without fear. No other nation or people has that. May we continue to stand for God's will.

I don't know this movie. IT it a good one to buy?

FOG, it's a fact from the Movie trivia that I read about the movie. While NAtilie was singing, they didn't have the heart to tell her she wasn't very good (or maybe not good enough for their movie) so after all was said and done, they hired a singer to dub over her singing parts. We still hear her speaking but someone else is singing. Yes, A Hepburn is the same way.

I'm so sorry to hear this tragic news. It's always tragic to hear a child die, but even more so when it's a child that meant so much to those around him. From what I've read here, Alex was something very special and was beyond his years. He meant alot to many people and in many ways. It sounds like he passed God's gifts to all he knew. We won't ever understand God's plan and why He called Alex home. But Alex has "made his mark" on those who knew him. He has touched and taught each and every one of you close to him in ways you may not understand. For that you can celebrate his life and be glad that God shared Alex with you. And judging from what you say here, he will not be forgotten. You will all be that more "special" just by how Alex has influenced your lives. And please pass my condolences on to the Father. Tell him that I will pray for he and his family. And that he will forgive himself one day. Lean on God's strength when you can't find your own, He will be there for ALL of you. Some angels wear wings, and some wear Boy Scout Uniforms. God Bless all!

FOG, I know you never heard her sing, she couldn't sing. When they filmed it, she was singing but the dubbed her voice for another without telling her. That's what I was refering to. As for the rest, I learned along time ago not to agrue with you. You like to be devil's advocate and I'll just let you.

Ah, come on FOG, you mean not everyone in the fifties ( but West Side Story was actually in the Sixties, wasn't it?) danced around fire Hydrants and fight with tunes and side steps? Didn't everyone have a background singer to dub in a awful singing voice like Natalie Wood?

...and then there are Boy Scouts- neither Whimp OR Barbarian but real men when we are through! Praise the Lord for that!

So back to the question in hand.............

Girl Scouts have a seperate day the following month when they recognize Juliet Lowe's Birthday. Scout Sunday is for Boy Scouting. I'll let the girl scouts of the church plan that day.

I'm the Program Coordinator for our district day camp and the theme this year is "Cubs at Sea." I"m getting a late start on it but wondered if anyone had done this theme before and would like to share some of the things they did for their camp. OR if you have ideas you think should be at camp. I would dearly love to hear fform you! Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks for all your help. Our church itself has no charters for scouting, only members that are in scouting. And I was already thinking of the scouts, coming in uniform and serving in areas where others could have a break like greeters, servers in kitchen, and maybe even communion and offering. I just didn't know if any of you did anything more for that day. The lay Pastor for Worship happens to also be a Tiger Leader. He was asking about the ministry moment and whether we should speak to how Scouts serve God in what we do. For that I was drawing a blank. Frankly, I think it will be enough for us to serve in the worship roles. Being in uniform and serving God within the church I think will speak volumes about Scouting. And your right, the focus is about the Lord, not Scouting.

Hey, I finally convinced my non-denominational church to do a Scout Sunday. (Well, the worship lay pastor is a newly appointed Tiger Leader, I tapped into that! Gotta use your resources!) But they aren't real big into Scouting, most of the parents focus more on the youth programs within the church. Although their are several youth in the church that are into Scouting. We'll probably end up with atleast 20 kids in uniform, boy and cub scouts. They never have done this before, and I have never attended a Scout Sunday. Do any of you have any resources or suggestions as to what to do? What you do do in your churches?

Congradulations in finding your new life with the Lord! Use the "F" as a lesson though. The Lord won't give you more than you can handle but you still have to use the resources He puts in front of you! Scouting is great and all, but your schoolwork should come first! (Spoken like a true Mom! ) Anyway, it's fun to look back on Scouting history. I live in Washington and we have one of the oldest Boy Scout Camps here, Camp Parsons. BP visited it back in 1926 along with Lady Olave and James West. Just recently, the camp built a new building that houses all the camp history and pictures of the many Scouts who have stayed over the years. My own father attended in the 50's, my brother went in the late 70's and now my own boys are attending. If any of you go out of state to camp, consider this camp. It's a great one nestled between the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. They do boating, swimming and long term hikes out of the camp as well as all the other goodies like MB and advancement and just plain fun!

I chair a Merit badge day also in our district. However, I've worked very hard to NOT make it a "mill" for cranking out badges. But it's also taken me two years to convince others that that's not happening with my event. The way I approach this is that I get commitments from the MB counselors ahead of time as to what will be offered. They also send me what requirements will be covered and what needs to be done outside of the Jumboree (That's what we call it). I check it to make sure that what the Counselor says will happen is feasible but not pushing it just to get it done. Then I send registrations out to the boys with that information and make it clear that they won't necessarily walk away with the blue card completed. But they can also see what is offered and what they can do before hand to have the MB Counselor sign off. In that way, they could complete the MB that day. My goal for the day is to help the boys match themselves with MB Counselors (The younger ones have trouble doing it on their own sometimes). The rest is between the Counselor and Boy. And hopefully afterward, it will give the boy the confidence to seek a counselor on their own. I also use the day to offer MBs that wouldn't otherwise be thought of. For instance, as sessions were filling last year, one boy only had Theatre to choose from. He resisted but still signed up for it. At lunchtime, he met up with me and said "Ms. McCarthy, I'm glad that Dad and you made me take Theatre, I'm having a great time!" Then he proceded to tell others. Under request, I have to make sure to offer it next year, I've got at least 6 boys interested. Afterall, that's what MBs are REALLY for! Not to "get Eagle," (BTW, did you know that it's not Nationals goal to get boys to Eagle Scout but rather to first class!)but to experience things that the boys would otherwise not try. This is my REAL goal for the Merit badge day! BTW, if any of you have run a MB clinic or day or whatever you call it, I would be very interested in hearing how you do it. I"m always looking for wasy to improve our MB Jumboree! Thanks!

My three sons are also in a troop that sticks to their old ways sometimes. But my boys attend District and Council events anyway. Some things get talked about at the troop and slowly they go too. I'm sure your boy will be able to register as an individual scout. PErhaps he can talk he patrol into going too!

Great for you! Now that the "hard" work is done, you should continue the path and encourage others to attend. It's a brillant experience that can't be explained until you go to Woodbadge. I'm still working on my ticket but I'll get there too soon! I wish my group stuck together after the course but I'm afraid that my group is so proficient in scouting, that we all went our own way and into our varied Scout jobs. I miss that when I hear of other groups who still band together. But it still was a great thing to do, no doubt! I used to be a fox.......

I need your help. I'm chair of our Adult Leadership Recognition Night and every year I have a theme to base the evening in (such as "Putting the Outing in Scouting" or Scout History, or Scouting and the Native American Culture). This year, I'd like to do something Hawaiian style. But not the typical party luau thing, I'd like to show us Northwesterners what and how Hawaiian culture has influenced scouting. (For instance, Ceremonies, songs, stories, special awards, etc.) In our area we use alot of the native american things. I'm sure Hawaii does something simuliar. (or South Pacific) If anyone is from Hawaii or knows the "different" things they do with scouting, I'd greatly appreciate some insight. Even to direct me somewhere on the internet to which I have not found anything yet. I've increase the numbers coming to our districts dinner because people know how much I put into the evening to make it fun and interesting, I"d like to do the same this year. I'm a First Class Girl Scout and I also recieved a letter from the President, President Carter for me. Actually, any President in office will still send a congradutory letter to any Eagle Boy Scout or First Class Girl Scout. You just need to request it now, (it used to be done automatically). As far as inspirational stories, the only real example I have is of my Brother, Eagle as of 1981. He hasn't done anything newsworthy, nothing that anyone would take notice of if you weren't looking. He lives any ordiniary life you can imagine. But in living his life he makes solid moral choices along the way. He doesn't hold back when it's time to help others, many times putting others before himself. And he doesn't just sit back, he lives life to its fullest. He leads when its necessary, he follows when its necessary. He gives others time to shine and rarely takes the spotlight onto himself. MAny times, he points the spotlight to others! Yet, his Eagle Wings shine so bright that you can't help but take notice! To me, this is what a true Eagle is. Someone who can stand tall and live life as it was intended. .....My brother!

I saw an interesting question on another site I belong to and thought it would be a good question to pose here; Anyone have any inspirational stories on how something you learned in scouting helped you in some way in your adult life? They were looking to inspire Cub Scouts with the ultimate goal of becoming an Eagle Scout, but I thought is would be an interesting thread here.

DS, not a bad idea about the Journal. More importantly, it will be good for your descendants to read about their ancestor. When I was doing my family roots. I found the same such journal kept by my 9th great Grandfather and his days in New England. Talked about all sorts of family members and their day in the life. As well as town events and even an entry about the President's decision at the time. IT was a "wow" find! So keep that in mind as you write yours. Your future (Many greats)grandchild could be reading it!

Can "Bob" and "FOG" go spar off somewhere else? This isn't helping with the scouting issues. Repectfully requesting.........
