  1. I'd say partially right. There's a bunch of people involved in these scenarios. A few I've seen: You definitely have people who are serial volunteers, and can't say no. (I'm one of those people!!!!). Those folks are really prone to burn out. These are some of the best volunteers, but can also be prone to accepting responsibilities they cannot deliver on. I agree with your description. Next is the Sniper. They shoot passive-aggressive, or even well meaning advice, but when the work needs to be done, they have an excuse ready, or are conspicuously absent. This is generally a parent who isn't a volunteer, but it can be anybody. The Boss is somewhat like you've described Stosh. We had an old CC who wanted to tell the Scoutmasters how everything should be done, but hadn't been to a camping trip in over 5 years. He was so removed from the program he'd lost the on-the-ground reality. I've not yet seen the Boss in a Scout Troop that is so process oriented they don't care about people. (I have seen it in the workplace.) The Helper. They take one a few small jobs here or there. These are the folks that we need to engage into the bigger roles, as long as it fits their personality, skills and life situation. The Outsider: They might become a volunteer, but they think everything is going well. They are the kind that drops their kid off every week and cuts the checks, but that's about the extent of their involvement. Getting them to step into the mix is really hard unless there is some kind of crisis going on where the need is super obvious. Anybody got anything to add? Corrections? These are my observations from my Troop. YMMV
  2. Midi-Cholorians.... I was entertained with the 7th movie. Wasn't he best movie ever, but it was fun. I think part of the badge is to get them to watch movies they may not watch otherwise. In response to the OP: Another good one is "Remember the Titans." A little more violent, (It technically has a PG rating,, but that was because the modern ratings weren't in place yet.) is "Glory."

  8. Wasn't Scouts on BOR's pretty commonplace in the early BSA? Why did they go away from that?

  11. I have no idea what to make of that metric. Scouts are older on average when they make Eagle. What's the significance of that?
  12. Honestly, I feel the burn from time to time. It's generally the politicking of adult things that make me question "Why am I still doing this.?"
  13. It may be worth having a parents meeting to go over some of these things with the parents. @@Eagledad or @@fred johnson might have some advice on how to conduct that sort of thing and what to say. ​To explain the need for more committee members and need parents to help out with BOR's

  15. I've never heard of Council following up on donors to an Eagle project. They also most likely will not call the people who are listed as a reference. Those listed as a reference are supposed to write a letter for the BOR to read.
  16. Once our Scouts complete all the other Eagle requirements, We have our Eagle Adviser reach out to the Districts Eagle Advancement Chair to schedule the review. Our Troop's Eagle Adviser also handles sending out and collecting the Reference Letters. We generally hold the Eagle Boards at the Church on the same night as the Troop meeting so that the committee members that sit on the board don't have to make multiple meetings in a week, but if necessary we do them on other nights, or on a weekend. Depends on the schedule of the District Eagle folks.
  17. Ever since I became a Scout in 2005, I've heard 4 out of 100. Not sure. I can't say I care particularly what the number is and whether it's above or below average.
  18. Lol. I don't feel like it's optimistic that the people who's job it is to create units would know the rules and process behind it. Maybe I'm asking for too much.
  19. Welcome to the forum. I'm not a committe member, so I have no experience with this issue. Remember that this forum is not an Official BSA website, and very few of us are BSA professionals. I recommend chatting with your DE, and if they doesn't know anything, your Councils Scout Executive.

  22. I'll play the "both sides of the story" game. I don't this poster well. I don't know the Troop. I don't know the SM. It would be pretty useless for me to offer any advice other than, talk to the CC and IH, tell them what you know, and it's their job to handle it. ​In short, in cases of other Troop politics, I give what the next step is, (Which is report to the CC and IH). Zuzy is probably telling the truth. I try not to speculate about situations I know next to nothing about. There are some folks on here, like Stosh, Krampus, MattR, and Eagledad, (and that's by no means an exhaustive list!) that I feel like I know pretty well, and I trust what they say. The unfortunate nature of the internet is, not everything is true, anybody can pretend to be anything, and say anything, and you'll never quite know for sure. Pretty serious accusations. But since we're all speculating, I'll bite. If the alleged information is accurate, and it was my Troop, I'd do what I could remove that Scoutmaster. If I couldn't, as an ASM, I'd step down until they found a suitable replacement. ​Sentinel947
