  1. http://shop.ebay.com/karmund527/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340 You gotta love how this guy managed to get 4 full sets when you were only supposed to be able to get 1 per day. Honestly I don't like many of them.
  2. http://weaselzippers.us/2010/08/06/boy-scouts-send-president-obama-a-little-message/ Wow that is just ugly! Still not a fan of the man but this makes me ashamed to be a Scouter. Listen to the comments. All i can say is I am glad that this was not my Council posting this but it is still bad fro everyone....
  3. Great to hear the news about the fire to finish! Sucks to hear the news about the patches. It makes my stomach turn to hear about Scouts stealing. I am not quite sure how I would react if I caught someone in the act of doing it. My son brought home extras from our council. Private message me your address and I will send your son some of those. I also challenge everyone else to do the same!
  4. I wathed it on TV and the guy that went down the rope was SOAKED in sweat and the CSE had on a perfectly dry and pressed shirt. What I can tell you is that really was Mike Rowe in the bucket of that Cat. Even double checked the video!
  5. After I retrieved my Scout for the airport yesterday he brought up the booing before we even got out of the parking lot at the airport. He said it was all over and that he was shocked by it. When I asked him if he did he said he did not and netiher did anyone that had a sense of respect. His exact words were "you don't boo the Commander-in-Chief". He also said that "even if you don't like the man he is still the President of the United States". It makes me proud to hear him say that even though, sadly, it is not what he hears at home. I guess he taught Dad that he needs to be a better example. While I don't agree with the choices this President makes he is still the President. I think it is time to let this conversation die..... Just saying.
  6. Mike Rowe did an excellent job tonight. The kids loved it and I did as well. Overall the Show was excellent. Parts could have been eliminated but it was great overall.
  7. So there was not a video message from the President this morning. Do you think it might be a prelude to a visit this weekend? My son was not excited at all the he was possibly coming. I did talk to him this morning and he said Robert Gates' message was good. He is more excited about Mike Rowe coming.
  8. We have one for both the Pack and the Troop. I think it is no different that a website with a photo album, calendar, etc. I have control as well as a couple of other adults. We have a fan page for both. If you need something more for communication then the group works better.
  9. Moosetracker I disagree with you. Routine labor DOES make it unacceptable. In the Eagle Project Workbook under limitations the first bullet point states: 'Routine labor (a job or service normally rendered) should not be considered.' So painting or mowing or ...... is not to be considered.
  10. They want some book shelves built in their children's area. No where routine maintainence. Thanks for the input.
  11. Sorry if this is somewhere else but I could not find it. Does anyone know of any restrictions that do not allow a Scout to do an Eagle project for his chartered organization? I have looked at the workbook and the advancement committee book and I find it in neither location. It seems there is a myth or fact in our district that we do not allow this. I am on the district committee and we are trying to clean-up and put some consistency in our Eagle Boards and if this is not an actual requirement then we need to know so we can stop this from happening. I called our DE and he said it was not the case but is going to get back to me after he checks on it. Now don't get me wrong I am not going to advocate to our Scouts to only do projects at our CO but it might be nice if we give back on occasion. Is anyone aware of this being fact or not????
  12. you should have a link on the left side under Unit Tools. Clicking on Unit Tools up top just gives the descriptions.
  13. My son received a denial today due to height/weight. He plays football and wrestles but the BSA only goes on height/weight. Seems very discriminatory to me. When I told him he stated that the BSA should offer a fitness test and I agree. Luckily he was approved by the Regional Medical Advisor.
  14. There are some DE's that will do anything for you and some DE's that I wouldn't do anything for. They are hot and cold. Hope you get a good one!
  15. "I am without any data on the district." You should be able to call your council service center and ask for an Untrained Report from Scoutnet and get an idea of who needs what. I will warn you that some people will show as untrained and are trained to the gills. A couple of years ago I was listed as totally untrained and I had been to and staffed Wood Badge. The information is only as good as the records the Council keeps.(This message has been edited by scouts-a-lot)
  16. We use padlocks like this when it is parked. They cannot be cut off: http://www.bikebandit.com/assets/product_images/09MasterLockSSRndPdlkLG.gif We put a lock like this on the hitch: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://image.fourwheeler.com/f/9033647/129_0708_06_z%2Bcarson_4x4_trailer%2Bhitch_lock.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/trail/129_0708_carson_4x4_trailer_winch_sercurity/photo_02.html&usg=__b_sG7ToiBVFroNfQSfAgFMrbROw=&h=480&w=640&sz=61&hl=en&start=36&sig2=2UX0X3Ix04E5Yx89JVdVWw&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=CHBZwqXcM-vGhM:&tbnh=103&tbnw=137&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhitch%2Block%26start%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26rlz%3D1T4GGLL_enUS370US371%26ndsp%3D18%26tbs%3Disch:1&ei=fRXrS8ecNYrHsAaa_6GMDw We also wrap the safety chains around the receiver and lock them together. Ours was stolen years ago and they hooked the chains together and lowered the trailer down and used the chains to tow it off. We have two trailers that are chained together and then chained to a telephone pole.
  17. I was told this last weekend that it will not actually be available online until June 1st. We had a district training for Cub specific this last weekend and had 33 Cub leaders and 8 Merit Badge Counselor folks trained. This by far is the largest we have ever had attned for a district level training. Felt like we made a difference! The issue I have with it just being online is you cannot get the discussion that comes out of doing it in person. If you have a question about something you can't exactly talk into the mouse and get a response back from your PC. But if it gets people to get trained then I guess it can't be all bad. 18. I pulled the plug on our pack campout last spring after we had golf ball sized hail and the clouds dropped to treetop levels. The storm came in two waves. We left between waves. The second wave was worse and actually spawned a tornado and hit a big city about 75 miles away. It is amazing how a cub cxmp can go up is 2 hours but come down in 15 minutes. But that is how is goes in the midwest.
  19. @Eagle92 - what do you mean test out option?
  20. @Eagle92 - Probably because national has 10,000,000 pairs they imported from China at 23 a pair sitting in a warehouse somewhere.
  21. What about the Bear and Tiger with the shirt tales hanging out?
  22. man am I glad I read this. It never even crossed my mind that the kid will need something other than Furit of the Loom! Gotta get cracking on this one. In respose to the shower at school thing: My son is a middle schooler and they do not have showers in the school for them to use. I have asked what he does after gym and he told me he lathers up in deodorant. Showers really make no difference because he also told me that if you do not want to participate you can go sit in the bleachers and watch, listen to tyour iPod or text and you still get a passing grade. No wonder our kids are getting so fat. Between the lack of exercise in school and the crap they feed them it is amazing Oprah has not had to cut more of them out of the house and send them off to fat camp!!
  23. My question is what happens if something heated comes up in the meeting? Do you allow the SPL to sit through that and possibly watch something that should never be seen by the Scouts? Do you allow them to be exposed to what can sometimes be the ugly side of Scouting? I am not saying that every meeting is that way but what happens when Bob and John do not agree with each other and tempers flare? The SM is the link to the PLC for the other adults in the unit. Not the SPL. While I see the merit in asking him to speak at the comm meeting I don't see what the SPL can report that the SM cannot.(This message has been edited by scouts-a-lot)
  24. @GernBlansten - None of the LDS units in our district participate in anything we do as a district. Cub or Troop. They are ghost units to most of us.
  25. Our council does IOLS on Fri - Sun. To be LDS 'friendly' this fall the course will allow the LDS participants (or any others that want) to come out the previous Saturday and they will run through the Sunday part of the program that day. They will then come the following Friday and spend the night and all day Saturday with the other participants going through that part of the program. I am totally good with this approach and I am totally fine accomodating the needs of someone based on faith. The issues I can see is what happens Sunday morning when the dynamic built amongst the patrols is now short several people? What does it also say to the people who have come out for the entire weekend about making exceptions? Some folks are not as understanding as others.
