The postcards are a fundraiser, not their raison d'etre. The original purpose of NESA, as I recall, was to keep Eagle Scouts "connected" to the program and get them to continue to support Scouting at the Council level, both physically and financially. Over the years, there have been attempts to get a NESA "chapter" up and running in my Council with periodic breakfast and social meetings, but I don't think it ever went anywhere. The national organization also provides annual scholarships.

Major Change in Chartered Organization Relationship

Yes, the CO owns the assets, but if they have decided to bow out forever, the DE should be negotiating with them the disposition of the assets. The charter agreement and Regulations of the BSA state that the assets will revert to the Council if the CO is not going to retain them for future Scouting. -
That's the way it was back in my day...early 60s. COuld not begin working on a rank's requirements until the previous rank was awarded. I believe it was changed around the time of "First Class First Year", when they believed that once a Scout made FC, he was more likely to stay.

Remind me of a Scoutmaster's Minute: "A man who was traveling came upon a farmer working in his field and asked him what the people in the next village were like. The farmer asked "What were the people like in the last village you visited?" The man responded "They were kind, friendly, generous, great people." "You'll find the people in the next village are the same," said the farmer. Another man who was traveling to the same village came up to the same farmer somewhat later and asked him what the people in the next village were like. Again the farmer asked "What were the people like in the last village you visited?" The second man responded, "They were rude, unfriendly, dishonest people." "You'll find the people in the next village are the same," said the farmer." No disrespect intended, but after many years on this forum, we know that there are at LEAST two sides to every story and we are only hearing one. I admire you for your passion and wanting nothing but the best for the Scouts, and wanting to start a new unit. But it will NOT be "your" unit...it will be the Chartering Organization's unit, and you will work for them. IF you can find one in these uncertain times. Scouting is a partnership, consisting of the Scouts, their parents, the adult volunteers, the CO, and the BSA. ALL must work together, and in harmony. All we can hope for is that we all "Do Your Best" to make a positive experience for the Scouts. Good luck, and God Bless.

Major Change in Chartered Organization Relationship

To address the original question, have you engaged your DE and Commissioner? Tell them you are losing your charter and ask them what they suggest. The professional staff is paid to ensure units survive and succeed. -
The religious medal to the left is the Eastern Orthodox Catholic award. Correction: Catholic, Eastern (Eastern Orthodox is different)

Hard to tell....might be a Trail medal of some sort.

Our FOS presentations always said $325 per scout if I remember correctly...and that was 20+ years ago. -

What policy is it that "allows unscreened adults to be in charge on overnight trips"??

Just to clear up any misconceptions...the religious awards are NOT BSA awards and it is not a BSA program. The award should be earned through the scout's religious leader and awarded by the church. It is one of the few non-BSA awards that the BSA allows to be worn on the uniform. (Medal OR square knot, not both).

Scouts Canada Position on COVID Vaccines
scoutldr replied to RichardB's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Not sure if your comment was tongue in cheek...I hope it was. That same link says more than 600,000 died of the 1918 Flu (no longer PC to call it the "Spanish Flu"). I have a Masters in Public Health, a 40+ year career in various aspects of Public Health and my wife is an RN. Getting the jab was never a question and we stood in line as soon as we could secure an appointment. Wife just had her 3rd booster shot due to an immuno-suppressant medication she is taking. It knocked her for a loop for 2 days, unlike the first 2 doses which were no worse than the annual flu shot. We also got our flu shots last Friday. My buddy contracted COVID in August and was sick for 4 weeks in spite of being fully vaccinated. The virus of today is not the same virus that was circulating a year ago when the vaccines were being developed. Most of the "science" is indicating that COVID will continue to mutate and the vaccine will be an annual event just like the flu shot (and will probably be included in the flu shot vials). We have returned to social distancing and wearing masks when out in public. No way will I be found in a football stadium with 50,000 others without masks. But that's just me. -
BSA has no rules regarding jewelry. I would ask my SPL or Scoutmaster if there are any objections and if it is a safety issue or not. A very active Scout may find that the necklace could be damaged or lost. Do you encounter many battles during the course of an average day?

A Den Chief should be setting the example, including proper and complete uniform at all times.

As I recall my days in OA, the Scoutmaster begins the process by developing a list of scouts who are qualified for election, based on rank, # of nights camped, and last but not least, "Scout Spirit". Not sure how Scouts could enter the process without that step. I also agree that, beyond election night, OA participation is not a Unit responsibility. Back in my day, it was up to me to decide which OA events to attend and arrange for my own transportation. If my unit leaders attended, it was only because they were also OA members and were there providing "cheerful service" to the Lodge or Chapter. It was not their job to "supervise" me as a member of their unit, nor was it their job to make sure I had transportation. If the COs are going to be held responsible for what happens at OA events, then that changes the whole dynamic and OA as we know it will cease to exist. Some may view that as a good thing...I do not. OA is what kept me in Scouting and on the trail to Eagle.
