Scouternurse

While I too am a stickler for "uniformity" as far as BSA goes, the 100+ degree heat and sun in VA in summer, warrants ANYTHING that will protect an individual! I am a nurse; suffer from pre-cancerous skin lesions,and my personal MD says ANYTHING that covers you totally, should be allowed...including, sunprotecting shirts ! She used to put this in writing for me to show to medical at Jambo, but the last time in '05, medical just laughed and said WEAR IT! DON"T WORRY ABOUT AN MD LETTER!! No one stopped me,and I wore whatever hat and a long sleeved sun shirt, every day, over my jambo tshirt...and for once, I wasn't as burned as in other years there...WEAR YOUR BIG HATS; BIG SHIRTS; and don't worry whether it is BSA or not..I am serious...take care of yourself; your boys; your fellow scouts...Keep us as minimally exposed to sun as possible!!!

so where do leaders get the menu? It is mid April and I don't see it yet..( went in 01 and 05; both years, the menus were the same...no themes...)..I know, I have both to compare...

I went twice; going again this time; cell phones really, if they have reception, are a great way to go; waiting in line for the pay phones was terrible...my verizon worked well in '05; had cingular in '01 and that didn't work well...urge your boys to put names/subcamp troop #s on their devices; be careful with them; and perhaps, have insurance on them too...and be honest that if they find lost items,that they act like scouts and turn the things in...and alert parents, that you as a leader, are NOT responsible for their sons' belongings...

As a female assistant scoutmaster, I am so used to having my uniform on in public, going to and from meetings, at least weekly, if not more often, for council meetings, etc... It sparks alot of comments, to be seen "out in public in uniform" especially being a female in such a male dominated position. But that's tough!I wear my uniform with pride. I encourage my Scouts to do the same! I was a leader with our council for last year's Jamboree in Virginia; while at Arlington National Cemetary, on the pre-trip, I encountered some women who were upset to see that I was in the Boy Scouts! I was proud to be in uniform and able to stay calm and explain why I was proud to be a member. It floored the women who said nothing more, and left. Later I saw them with men in their tour group, who came over to some of my troop's scouts. The men spoke of how our group looked so neat and proper, especially their female leader. I think the pride we instill in our youth, for their appearance and their behavior, really pays off. Remember those days with pride as you see your son walk off so happy in his uniform!!
