The Number of Beads worn
ScoutBox replied to ScoutBox's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Thanks BadenP for your last comment. And please take no offense in my reply to you. I just feel that the whole WB thing going around here is a bit too deep. People either like talking about it, or don't.. Thanks to everyone for giving me back positive input. I have learned loads on here. -
The Number of Beads worn

BadenP, I have been on many boards for the past 7 years. I am also a member of one of the worst boards on the internet. MP.NET. Where as a BTDT, I have gotten attacked by 13 year old kids thinking that I must be wrong about something I did for 10 years serving in the military because it didn't match up to his idea of what an Army Ranger is like on the films.. so When I start a Thread about a subject, I would like that thread to stay on subject. Like I said and was said by others on here, there are several threads on WB going, and many people including yourself have brought up the idea of how selfish Scouters are for going to WB, and wearing the uniform, or how WB isn't the way it used to be, so it must be useless. Well, this thread was only about one question. And that question was WHO can or does wear beads after 4 beads. This was brought about because I was in a conversation with someone else over the weekend, on a Scout Hiking Trip. Nothing else. I am not looking to earn, obtain, win, or find 4, 5, 6 beads.. Now back to the Thread, usually when someone starts a thread, that person dictates the direction of a thread. That said that person can get away from the subject, and normally admin and MODs keep an eye on this. Trying to keep that thread on subject, and letting those who want to highjack his or her thread know that this is unexceptable. I was just letting you know that I didn't like it that you did what you did. And now look, You have won, you not only highjacked my thread, and not respected my wishes, but you have gone and started name calling, and shown me that your agenda is the only discredit the Wood Babdge program, and anything to deal with it on this forum. I am here to gain help, share ideas, gain information, meet other scouters, and make friends. But not fight, or show un.scout like behavior... YIS SB -
ARC Wilderness First Aid vs. Others
ScoutBox replied to Beavah's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
I got the standard Military and advance life savings training while in the Army, Even EMT qualifications. But since I've been back in Scouting, I have taken again CPR, and last month took a Mountain First Aid Course here. I didn't learn anything new, and felt that although it was good to not only get the certification, but I didn't learn anything new, in fact I learned that I know more then the class was able to teach.. I would like to take a more advance First Aid course if I can.. -

BTW, OGE hit the nail on the head. And I'm not here to question anyones feelings about Scouting. I though we were all here to learn more and to share ideas. But I was just a little heated when I read that. I feel that I can't ask a simple question without be named something I ain't. I'm not in it for myself. But I do like having fun when I do something. My son and the Scouts in his troop and in our Council are what's important to me. But I am dealing with a guy on my side who is one of those types who thinks he needs to express his ideas on everyone. And he got it wrong, So I wanted to make sure I had it right. Not that it will change anything. He replied to my letting him know what the correct info was as OTT?? Whatever that means.. So, doesn't matter anyway, but at least I know better now. -

I asked the question because I needed the answer. I didn't ask it for myself. I am not looking to get 6 beads.. In fact I am yet too me beaded. Will happen next month. I needed the information because I had a conversation with someone else, who is a Know it all, and in fact he was wrong. So I thank those of you who replied with an answer. As for why people join scouting, or WB etc.. that is already a subject beaten into the ground on several Threads on here, so If I wanted that information I could have opened any other Wood Badge Thread to have gotten that information. Again I only wanted to know WHO in Scouting wore beads, as in Does the National WB chief wear 5 beads?? Trolling is what is happening and what happens on most of the WB threads here. Getting off of the subject, bringing up someones opinion about if it's still WB or should it be something else etc.. whatever.. Just not what I was asking. We had an expression in the Army. Assuming makes and ass out of you and me.. I wasn't trying to be ugly about my comment, just asking to stay on subject. YIS, SB -

BadenP, not to sound ugly, but why do you think it necessary to bring this up on my thread. I was asking a simple question. Not the politics that several of you seem to bring up every time anything WB is mentioned. You have nothing to add to my question, perhaps it's better if you go to another thread to do this. This is trolling.. -

If I'd had been the SM of my troop when I started then I would have finished last year. But it took me two extra months.. -

Thanks. This is what I was looking for. I sort of had an argument with another Scouter this weekend, and he attended WB, Finished his Ticket but never got beaded. I'm trying to get him beaded, but no word for when this will happen. Anyway, he tried to make me believe that that only BP wore 5 beads, and he never heard of Green Bar Bill?? I told him that Green bard was a 5 beader and that the National Wood Badge Director could wear 5 beads. But since your telling me now that the UK Gilwell Director can wear 6 beads then this is even more info then I could have imagined. Anyway, I need to find a link with this to e-mail him so he can get his argument straight. Now that I have mine straight. -

Congrates.. Now get busy with your Ticket.. Great to hear you had a great time. I can only ditto that from my experience. "I used to be a Bobwhite, and a good'ol Bobwhite too".. -
I know that as a new WBer I will be next month awarded my "2" beads. I also know that come August I will be Staffing a WB Course as will be awarded the "3rd" bead. I know that BP worn 6 beads, and William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt, was a 5 beader. I also know that the Course Director is a *4* beader. Are there still "5" beader's awarded?

@Oak Tree.. you hit the nail on the head. I had the same experience as you. I too never saw any of the secret squirrel or attitude that many are talking about here. In fact the Staff dispelled any idea of a secret club ... I know this because I and several others ASKED.. Did have one guy question the value of the course and he was in my Patrol. Also a very smart individual. He too asked about why was this course considered the top of the level in Scout Courses, I think maybe he knew something I didn't. I also was one of those who asked several of the old timer staff people about the changes made. The CD had on display 60 years of WB Course pics books albums projects etc too look at. I felt sorry for the Staff members who had to answer some of these questions from others. They were there to do a job, not the politics of the BSA.. But they put on the best course I could imagine, and supported us all in our education and tickets.

When was the last time you had contact with your Unit Commisioner?
ScoutBox replied to Troop22's topic in Council Relations
Sadly never.. we don't have one.. but we need one.. -
Always roll, if you fold or stuff this can cause creases in the material which can cause wear and tear on the folded or creased part of the tent.

Agree, but this will be at the SAC, and there's not much time scheduled in for this. I want to have something small.. and most fo the people going to SAC are serious Scouters, and most are already WB'd.. we're a small Council in TAC.

SP, your right. I've already been offering this. I've also offered to drive home a drive right back tot eh same camp for Golden Eagle Youth course the following week to get boys too go. Still no takers on anyone's part. My next step is to go to other troop's meetings and see about getting some adults that way. i have one SM already WB. Helping me. And I'll send people's e-mails to my CD/SM so he can talk to them.

I am so happy the pocket is going away.. The thing is a problem. I have slammer boys that can't get the larger CSPs and the unit numbers above the patches. And the pocket is useless. I don't allow my scouts to carry iPods, and none of them wear the shirt in the field anyway.. they wear t-shirts..

I feel good that I've gotten the chance to complete them, or should I really say get them started, because I'll be working them forever, making sure that they are a continuing process and standard. I was happy to have had the chance to go to WB. And I am happy when I get them. But I will be getting my third in August as a Staffer. So I will still have a lot to do. I also want to get more adults from my area to Wood Badge. The problem where I live is that many fo the adults either don't have the time for adult training, the distance is too great. 400 miles from Camp. or they aren't interested in getting trained. They think they know it all. I found out fast that I didn't know it all, and was happy to have gotten the chance to get educated, and to continue my education in Scouting..

I have finished my Ticket, and have reported back to my TG, and CD/SM. I will be getting beaded in March at the Scouter's Annual Conference. I asked for something really, really, small. Just a few Bobs, Owl, Fox, Bear, and an Antelope. And anyone else I know who happens to be around to be there. Nothing big. Finishing my ticket was a bit of a job. I'd hit a wall within my troop and new SM. He didn't want to support my ticket, And he helped me write it???
