  1. The BSA successfully lobbied to change the WV Constitution. In Nov, 2014, voters approved the amendment which allowed just one non-profit (BSA) to rent their facilities to for-profit groups. As far as I know, the Summit has not been financially self-sustaining as promised.
  2. I think there was a special uniform police blue ribbon task force but they could not agree where to wear their badge. Found this on internet. More wrong than right may not be "official uniform" but sure looks back-in-the-day authentic to me. Note , hot chocolate stains are in a camouflage pattern. My $0.02,
  3. Harvard University cancelled hosting a very popular on-campus Merit Badge University . Spirit of Adventure Council is considering rescheduling those merit badge classes to council facilities. Related, FIRST robotic competitions have been canceled in MA and CT.
  4. NJ Sea Scouts refurbish Coast Guard 40's boat old photo after CG 40450 out of service and before Sea Scouts refurbish. ...The founding Scouts met while camping at the Joseph Citta Scout camp in Barnegat and decided they wanted to form a local Sea Scout chapter of the Boy Scouts. The Sea Scouts is open to boys and girls. The numbers have grown to 15 registered members, and they meet twice a month, the second and fourth Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the Tuckerton Seaport’s Hunting Shanty. Seven of the 15 registered members, ages 14 to 21, are already Eagle Scouts, but the others can work on their Eagle Scout ranking while in the Sea Scouts. Some of the Eagle Scouts are now working toward their Sea Scout Quartermaster rank. Erin is already familiar with being on the water as her father was on the sailboat racing circuit, and Julianne takes part in the Navy Junior ROTC at her high school. Skipper Murphey said the boat was donated in December by Frank Moran of Staten Island, who passed away a few weeks ago, but not before he had arranged for Dave Moran Towing (not a relative) to bring the boat down to Great Bay Marina. The cost to the scouts was zero. “Frank wanted it to go to the kids,” said Murphey. The Scouts will supply the sweat equity to get the boat on the water in time for this summer, Murphey hopes by June. The owners of Great Bay Marina, Tom and Anna Paxton, donated the dry dock to the scouts, and when it’s ready for the water, Brad and Cheryl Bennett, owners of Stewart’s Drive-In in Tuckerton, have donated a slip for the boat on Tuckerton Creek. Murphey is excited to have the power boat, which has two GMC 671 diesel in-board motors, waiting for a boat mechanic to donate time. Coast Guard Utility boat 40450 was built in 1951. It is just like boats that used to work out of Coast Guard Station 119, now the Rutgers University Marine Field Station at the end of Great Bay Boulevard in Little Egg Harbor, said Murphey. “They were called ’40 boats’ and did the patrolling and rescue missions all along the coast.”... 6. If the GSUSA is granted relief to proceed with the trademark lawsuit in NY, is the GSUSA then removed from the Chapter 11 select creditor panel? I did not understand their selection as their claims appear wholly based on damages yet to be "proven" in that trademark lawsuit.

  8. Aug 8-9, 1970: For 26 hours this weekend, Boy Scouts and their parents in all parts of the country knew that a 12‐year‐old boy had died of what New Mexico health officials called “a communicable disease.” What most of these people did not know was that state health officials thought that the highly contagious form of plague, called pneumonic, was responsible for the boy's death. He died Thursday while on a hike at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch at Cimarron, near the Colorado border. Because of their suspicion, health officials sealed off the ranch from contact with the outside world. The quarantine affected the 4,000 scouts and staff, including 244 boys and leaders from the metropolitan New York City area, camping at the Philmont Ranch. “We assumed the worst,” Dr. Bruce Storrs of the State Health Department in Santa Fe said today in an interview. “We had no alternative but to quarantine because the Scouts were a camp of transients coming and going daily to all parts of the country,” he said. 9. Well at least they are wearing neckers and even a few correctly over the collar. I like the knot, as when you need to use your functional necker, you will not worry about losing the slide. My $0.02,
  10. A January 1931 Daily Oklahoman article entitled, “Kingdom for Boys” shared, “Robbers Cave, where bandits once hid between raids upon pioneers’ settlements, ranches, homes, farms and town communities, is now a mecca for a new clan. It is a modern boy’s camp and is located in the center of the territory served by the Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.” More in link below which is the first of a four-part series on the 90th anniversary of Camp Tom Hale and the Hale Scout Reservation: https://www.mcalesternews.com/opinion/cathey-celebrating-th-anniversary-of-camp-tom-hale-at-robbers/article_f7aac6ce-e096-5ff4-aa72-90f480db0003.html

  12. Or maybe the recent painful memory that scouts died helping others during epidemic. “Spanish ‘flu’ is no respecter of persons and people of all races, nationalities, and walks of life. My ambulance hauled nine people from one family.” scout John (Jack) Williams, Richmond, VA 1918 John (Jack) Williams was a fifteen-year-old boy living in Richmond, Virginia, and attending the Chamberlayne School for Boys when he faced death of the magnitude he described here. At Chamberlayne, an Episcopal boarding school, Williams was an outstanding student. Not only did he excel academically, Williams was also captain of the Chamberlayne Corps, a youth military training group; president of the Jackson Literary Society; and an active member of the Boy Scouts. Because of these activities, the school’s principal described Jack as being “endowed with gifts of no ordinary kind” and filled with “limitless possibilities.” However, it was Jack’s willingness to serve his community that ultimately led to his death during the 1918 flu pandemic. Against his parent’s wishes, Jack volunteered with his Boy Scout troop to transport sick flu patients from their homes to the newly established emergency hospital in John Marshall High School. That close contact with flu would prove fatal. Williams succumbed to the virus on October 11, 1918, and died on October 16—only five days later. As in other places, Richmond had no vaccines and no antibiotics to treat the secondary infections that accompanied the virus. Medical professionals and city officials could only rely on isolation, quarantine, general personal hygiene, and limited group gatherings. In an attempt to stop the spread of the highly contagious virus, health officials urged citizens to wear gauze masks in public. 13. THE WAR IS OVER, BUT OUR WORK IS NOT. Post World War 1, about a million members and a drive to increase membership. 16. It was unclear to me whether the first committee would also represent scouts who were victims of other injuries, e.g., dehydration, car accidents, ... I am also puzzled by the use of term "survivor" instead of "victim" in documents.

  19. 3/4/20: The U.S. Trustees Office formed two committees. The U.S. Trustee program is the arm of the Justice Department that oversees bankruptcy case administration and litigates to enforce bankruptcy laws. - committee to represent victims. Nine men who say they were sexually abused as children were selected to serve on the committee after nearly eight hours of closed-door interviews by representatives of the U.S. trustee's office. "The most difficult decision we had to make today was who not to put on the committee," David Buchbinder, a trial attorney with the trustees office, told a packed room of abuse survivors and attorneys. "We admire the courage of every single one of you." - committee to represent the interests of other unsecured creditors, such as suppliers, vendors and pensioners. Members of that committee are the Girl Scouts of America, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., Pearson Education, former BSA executive Roger Ohmstede, and Lion Brothers, an apparel brand manufacturer that provides merit badges and patches. 20. Great ideas. Some of the scout camps here in New England have Clivus composting toilets . Treasure Valley has a large solar array and has or had a sustainability project with WPI.
  21. Sigh..., I am waiting for a question to the Presidential candidates regarding the future of the BSA. Bernie Sanders was in scouts. Michael Bloomberg is an Eagle Scout. Here's a 2009 story about Mayor Bloomberg using his scout first aid skills.
  22. "Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois serves over 9,000 girls and 3,587 adult volunteers in 40 ½ mostly rural counties in southern Illinois. GSofSI has a yearly operating budget of approximately $3.7 million. One out of every seven school aged girl in our jurisdiction is a Girl Scout." https://www.gsofsi.org/en/about-girl-scouts/about-gssi.html "The Board recognizes the need to preserve the financial value of camp properties while also ensuring the delivery of Girl Scout activities and experiences. In selling the camp properties, the asset value of the camps will remain. Camp assets of the Council will be transformed into financial assets of the Council. The Board has directed that all proceeds from the sale of the camps be deposited into the newly established Girl Scout Experience Fund. Last night, the Board approved the creation of the Girl Scout Experience Fund (the “GSE Fund”). The GSE Fund is to provide direct financial support for delivering the Girl Scout experience. These funds will help underwrite the costs of girls to fulfill their own Girl Scout experience, whether that experience be camping, horseback riding, zip lining, STEM, robotics competitions, leadership training, and a broad array of other Girl Scout experiences. An investment of $3.4 million from camp properties into the GSE Fund, at a return of 6%, would generate $200,000 annually to underwrite the costs of girls and their troops to have fulfilling Girl Scout experiences. By preserving the principal of the investment, and spending only the generated income, GSofSI will ensure the value of the camp properties will be continued to generate Girl Scout experiences for generations to come." https://www.gsofsi.org/en/about-girl-scouts/news/2020/from_the_desk_of_lor.html So $200,000/year would average $22/girl/yr in this Council. I'm not sure how much Girl Scout experience that would buy. I suspect the $3.4 million principle generating $200K/year interest will not be preserved. If this was a thrifty BSA council surely that money would be transferred to a black hole account - a new Council HQ, STEM center, or forced merger. Kudos to Girl Scouts of Southern Illinois website which I found more transparent than most BSA Council websites, My $0.02,
  23. Camp Wassatoga, near Effingham, Illinois; Camp Chan Ya Ta, near Worden, Illinois; Camp Torqua, near Edwardsville; and Camp Butterfly, near Farmington, Missouri...sold for $3.4M The camps together have a total of 1,233 acres of rolling hills, rocky bluffs, lakes, woods and meadows that include trails, shelters and other amenities for activities like paddleboating, sailboating, and volleyball. Together, the camps cost about $375,000 each year to operate. That cost was determined to be too high, while offering experiences Girl Scouts could get elsewhere in the area, CEO Loretta Graham said. Instead, the proceeds will create the “Girl Scout Experience Fund” ($200,000/year) to “underwrite the costs of girls to fulfill their own Girl Scout experience, whether that experience be camping, horseback riding, zip-lining, STEM, robotics competitions, leadership training, and a broad array of other Girl Scout experiences,” Graham said. ... The sale was a “devastating” surprise to troop leaders, who found out about the decision in an email Thursday, said Kimberly Hine of Collinsville. The camps gave thousands of Girl Scouts a place to try canoeing, fishing, zip-lining and archery — activities they often don’t get a chance to try anywhere else, she said. more at source: https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/illinois/girl-scouts-of-southern-illinois-selling-four-camps-for-million/article_a08f514c-0560-5517-8d9c-99de2d9ed124.html
