North Platte Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts help commemorate transcontinental airmail centennial On September 8, 1920, a DH-4 biplane lifted off in the early morning from a grass air strip east of New York City on Long Island, beginning a grand experiment to carry mail from the East Coast to the West in a series of hops across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and points west. Regional air mail service had commenced two years earlier linking New York and Washington, D.C. By 1919, 400 HP deHavillands where regularly carrying mail sacks between Omaha and Chicago, but the September flight that now pointed its nose towards the distant Hudson would link an entire continent, but not without financial cost and human sacrifice. Those first pilots called themselves "The Suicide Club." Air Mail 100 will commemorate that historic event, which led within the decade to the commencement of commercial passenger air service. With the encouragement of several of the nation's leading general aviation organizations, we have organized a series of volunteer flights linking the sixteen original transfer points, only seven of which continue today as active airports. The other nine have been "lost" to sands of progress, hidden under golf courses, urban shopping centers, hospital parking lots, and poetically, wind-swept grass fields again. Twenty-three pilots will take turns handing off a mailbag, picking up special postcards along the way, starting Tuesday on Long Island near New York City and ending Friday near San Francisco. Using their own, more modern planes, they’ll cover the same days, stops and territory — albeit at a somewhat faster pace — as the DeHavilland DH-4 biplane that first flew the route Sept. 8-11, 1920. The relay is scheduled to land about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the North Platte Regional Airport — itself just a year old in 1920 — and take off 30 minutes later for Cheyenne, Wyoming. Aviation buffs can follow the relay’s progress and read about the original flight and its airports at airmail100.com. Only one serviceable DH-4 survives in the United States , he said, making it necessary for the pilots to use their own Cessnas, Beeches, Pipers and other private aircraft. But “some of them are classic in that they’re dating back to the 1940s era,” Moore said. Sam Seafeldt, Lee Bird Field’s airport manager, thanked Bill Moore and the pilots for seeing to it that the transcontinental airmail centennial won’t pass unremarked. When the relay reaches North Platte, some members of Cub Scout Pack 292 and affiliated Boy Scout Troop 292 will hand off some 300 postcards to join others from previous stops. “I told them to write grandpas, grandmas, whoever they want, friends,” said Cubmaster Sean Condon. His pack and the Boy Scout troop are affiliated with St. Patrick Catholic Church in North Platte. Once the mailbag reaches San Francisco, Moore said, the postcards will be put in the regular U.S. mail for delivery. Air Mail 100’s mailbag by then should weigh about 50 pounds, he said, compared with a whopping 400 pounds of mail on the original 1920 relay. Condon said he and his fellow Scouting committee leaders were excited about the chance for their members to learn about transcontinental airmail and North Platte’s historical role in it. “There’s so much awesome history in North Platte that goes unnoticed,” he said. Seafeldt said the public is invited Wednesday to see the commemorative relay’s arrival and departure. https://nptelegraph.com/news/local/north-platte-cub-scouts-and-boy-scouts-help-commemorate-transcontinental-airmail-centennial/article_e84347c6-eeef-11ea-aba8-b7c0fd8ab33c.html http://airmail100.com/ http://www.antiqueairfield.com/features/us_airmail.html

Burnside, KY Mayor Robert Lawson and other city leaders were on hand at the Thursday board meeting for the Somerset-Pulaski Economic Development Authority (SPEDA) to present their plans for creating a Boy Scout heritage museum and Merit Badge Training Academy on what used to be Burnside's old high school property. No mention of the Blue Grass Council involvement? “This is going to happen. I don’t know how long it’s going to take,” Lawson told SPEDA members as he and Deco Architects President Derek Phillips showed off plans to create a multi-building complex that would, hopefully, become a regional Boy Scout training hub. ... The plan is to offer an area with a circular outdoor design, offering a possible amphitheater, a building to house a Boy Scouts museum and a Burnside historical museum, two buildings that would serve as classrooms offering educational instruction for scouts to earn merit badges, and a parking area that would be shared with the Masonic Lodge. Phillips said he felt that with the resources offered by Burnside, the lake and area attractions, along with short field trips to places like McCreary County and Cumberland Falls, a Boy Scout training center could offer classes on almost all of the approximate 135 badges that scouts have the potential to earn. ... Phillips said that the city’s connection of having the first Boy Scout troop in America made it instantly marketable today. “There’s one disclaimer, and that is that we failed to claim this history,” Phillips said. “So now, 100-some-odd years have passed. The Boy Scouts have written their history in a different way, although we have proof. So we have to be a little careful with our wording, but regardless, it’s indisputable that Burnside is the Birthplace of Scouting.” Burnside,KY is about 300 miles west of Summit Bechtel National Scout Reservation. ~RS https://www.somerset-kentucky.com/news/local_news/burnside-plans-boy-scout-training-academy-to-jump-start-tourism/article_007f90a5-31bd-5336-8ee2-ca44e369c2d0.html Burnside is one of several places that lay claim to be home to the first Boy Scout troop in the United States. In 1908, two years before the Boy Scouts of America was officially organized, Mrs. Myra Greeno Bass organized a local troop of 15 boys, using official Boy Scout materials she had acquired from England. A sign at the edge of town declares Burnside "Birthplace of Boy Scouts in America", and an official state historical society marker commemorates the troop.[3] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnside,_Kentucky I can understand with some oversight, a museum offering scouting programs to increase revenue, but a town? And shouldn't the local council be the driving force or at least involved? I must be missing some information? As far as I know, I have only visited one disputed birthplace and that was Riverside, Iowa which was tourism marketed as the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. The museum was in a local's garage. Not a money-maker.

Clint Buxton said he was at a high point Thursday, figuratively and literally. “It is drop-dead gorgeous,” Buxton said, speaking by phone from the top of Bromley Mountain. “I can look to the top and see where I came from yesterday.” The 61-year-old is hiking the Long Trail, partly to fulfill a longtime ambition and partly to raise money to help maintain Boy Scouts of American properties in Vermont. He set out from North Adams, Mass., on Saturday and expects to be on the trail for 27 days, covering 272 miles. People can track his progress and donate at scoutingvermont.org. Buxton normally spends his summer as the camp director at Mt. Norris Scout Reservation in Eden. When the camps was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Buxton said he decided it was time. He started training in July and set off shortly after his granddaughter’s birthday. He got pledges from various sponsors, with his own family donating $1 per mile of his hike to the Scouts. He said he has raised in the neighborhood of $10,000 so far. “Although this is a personal goal for me, I wanted to do something impactful for scouting, maybe do something to produce a multiplying factor,” he said. “Our society needs scouts more than ever. ... There’s some very strong national headwinds we’re dealing with, but I still believe in the program. I found the full quote as reported by NBC news. IMHO, it speaks to a BSA position more recognizable to us which I had hoped this topic was "moving forward' towards - a well-considered BSA policy regarding good character and citizenship - the Scout Oath and Law for these troubled times. Currently, we moderators are discussing the suitability of topics unrelated to Scouting even in I&P, after all, this is scouter.com not anothernews.com. @MattR @John-in-KC -

...topic and Scouting related... A Gilroy man was back in court Tuesday after being accused of violent threats against Santa Clara County Public Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody. The Santa Clara County sheriff also believes Alan Viarengo is part of the "Boogaloo Movement," a loosely organized, right-wing, anti-government group that advocates extreme violence and civil war. The 55-year-old Viarengo is also a professor at Gavilan College in Gilroy involved in Boy Scouts of America. The organization issued a statement saying in part, “This individual has been removed from Scouting and is prohibited from any future participation in our programs.” https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/detectives-seize-138-guns-explosives-owned-by-alleged-boogaloo-boy/2356051/ sorry for incomplete quote. If someone finds Council's full quote, please post. Thanks ~ RS -

Old school - Leadership Development method, give this problem to your PLC to solve and guide them. They might look at a map and find there is an ocean to the east or they might google and find nearby state parks (though summer is ending) https://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/swimming_schedule.html or they might contact council or nearby councils (Jersey Shore?) and reserve time at camp lake ... Judge Laurie Selber Silverstein declined Monday to approve a proposed order submitted by the Boy Scouts to restrict the ads, saying it was “incredibly broad” and raised concerns about First Amendment issues. “I need to understand how I can prohibit this type of speech,” said the judge. She continued the hearing until Sept. 9 and will accept additional submissions from attorneys through Friday. Among other things, Silverstein wondered whether she would have the authority to require attorneys to include information about the official claims website and telephone number in their advertisements. “I’m not downplaying the significance of the concerns, but of course that’s juxtaposed against the rights of attorneys to advertise,” she said. ... Silverstein also expressed skepticism that the Boy Scouts were trying to squelch claims. She pointed to concerns that the law firm ads direct people to phone numbers and websites other than those for the official claims agent. https://www.reuters.com/article/bankruptcy-boy-scouts/bankruptcy-judge-skeptical-boy-scouts-effort-to-curtail-ads-to-abuse-victims-idUSL1N2FX2E5 More details at this link: http://www.wboc.com/story/42572088/attorneys-argue-over-ads-targeting-boy-scouts-abuse-victims

I would have thought the appraisals of National's HA camps would have been completed by now. After two months, it appears that they have not begun? Meanwhile, councils submitted their assets lists in early July.

What if someone buys the BSA during bankruptcy?
RememberSchiff replied to ParkMan's topic in Issues & Politics
IMHO, ownership of one BSA trademark might stem the drain of girls to Boy Scouts and if not, the GSUSA would have license revenue from that drain and more. -
What if someone buys the BSA during bankruptcy?
RememberSchiff replied to ParkMan's topic in Issues & Politics
Agree, but there are other assets. What if the GSUSA wins their trademark infringement case and instead of the monetary damages (we might not have), they settle for the transfer of some BSA trademarks (we do have)? -
Congratulation and thanks for the good news!

You Solve It -- A likely Bankruptcy Scenario
RememberSchiff replied to Cburkhardt's topic in Issues & Politics
Our "council" camp is in fact not owned by council, just managed. A wise decision done years ago not because of lawsuits but for fear council would sell it. I expect our camp will become a totally separate business. Now whether the camp will run summer camp itself or contract with a scout council is a good question. I suspect the former. -

Debtor (BSA National) seeks Order to assume unexpired leases of nonresidential properties and fix the “Cure Amounts”. https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/cmsvol2/pub_47373/842937_1168.pdf Some Excerpts: 8. The BSA is a party to numerous agreements that may constitute leases of nonresidential real property (collectively, the “Unexpired Leases”). The Unexpired Leases pertain to various properties, including forty-nine (49) Scout Shops located across the United States (The leases for many of the Scout Shop locations have expired under their terms, and the BSA and local council counterparties are continuing to operate on the same terms provided for under the expired lease ); the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve located in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia (the “Summit”); and a warehouse located in Charlotte, North Carolina: Scout Shops: A significant portion of the BSA’s annual revenue comes from retail merchandise and product sales at approximately Scout Shops located across the United States. As of the Petition Date, these sales generated approximately $120 million in total annual revenue. Numerous local councils support these national sales efforts by designating a portion of their office space as a Scout Shop pursuant to lease agreements with the BSA. The Scout Shops are locations where the BSA sells uniforms, apparel, camping equipment, and other merchandise directly to BSA members. In return for the lease of local councils’ office space, the BSA remits monthly rent payments to such local councils based on a percentage of sales. This payment is calculated as eight percent (8%) of net sales at the Scout Shop location, plus an additional five percent (5%) escalator on annual sales that exceed $750,000 at such location. Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve: The Summit is a 14,000-acre high adventure facility located in the New River Gorge area of West Virginia. The real property and improvements of the Summit are owned by one of the BSA’s wholly owned subsidiaries, Arrow WV, Inc., and leased to the BSA under that certain Shared Services Agreement and Lease of Premises, dated as of February 13, 2017. Under that agreement, the BSA also provides the necessary services required to operate the Summit. Overflow Warehouse: The BSA subleases nearly 50,000 square feet of warehouse space in Charlotte, North Carolina from MXD Group, Inc. under the terms of a sublease dated May 8, 2017. The BSA uses these premises as an overflow warehouse for the BSA-owned National Distribution Center, which is also located in Charlotte. MXD Group, Inc. is the lessee under a master lease agreement with CK Ridge Creek West III, LLC, dated August 1, 2016. 9. The Debtors have strategically reviewed the Unexpired Leases in connection with their efforts to maximize the value of their estates in these chapter 11 cases. As a result, the Debtors have identified the Assumed Leases, which will continue to provide meaningful value to their estates and ongoing operations. (The BSA is in the process of seeking a further extension of the period within which it may assume or reject certain Assumed Leases beyond the September 15, 2020 deadline set forth in the Extension Order. If one or more Assumed Lease counterparties agrees to grant such an extension, the BSA will file a certification of counsel with the Court for entry of an order approving the extension in accordance with section 365(d)(4)(B)(ii) of the Bankruptcy Code and remove the relevant Assumed Lease from Schedule 1 to the Proposed Order.) Schedule 1 on page 17 of above link lists 51 Unexpired Leases of Nonresidential Real property and Cure Amounts. Will the Debtors BSA assume subsidiary Arrow WV's lease of Summit Bechtel to the BSA? Maybe @Jameson76 can explain. Update 9/11/20: Orders in this matter ORDER (I) AUTHORIZING THE DEBTORS TO ASSUME CERTAIN UNEXPIRED LEASES OF NONRESIDENTIAL REAL PROPERTY PURSUANT TO SECTION 365 OF THE BANKRUPTCY CODE AND (II) FIXING CURE AMOUNTS WITH RESPECT THERETO https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/cmsvol2/pub_47373/848090_1310.pdf ORDER APPROVING STIPULATIONS EXTENDING DEADLINE TO ASSUME OR REJECT CERTAIN UNEXPIRED LEASES... https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/cmsvol2/pub_47373/848097_1311.pdf
