  2. Moderator note, let's keep on topic Summit Summer Camp experience - activities, cold showers , costs, gear, medical checks, camp setup, check-in, safety,... Thanks P.S. oh and food. @John-in-KC @MattR
  3. http://npshistory.com/books/boy-scouts-katahdin.pdf I should like to hope that my book might make some boy beg his father to take him on a camping trip to Maine (without any gun but with a good camera!), and that it might make his father consent to go, where he will find just as much beauty and fun and strenuous, healthy excitement as his boy will, even if he can't climb Katahdin quite so fast, and wisely keeps out of the Chimney altogether. The Katahdin Chimney is no place for a father who isn't in condition. Scouts, keep your dads out of it unless they can chin themselves at least six times!
  4. To add to confusion "Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity. Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes." https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/charitable-organizations/the-restriction-of-political-campaign-intervention-by-section-501c3-tax-exempt-organizations#:~:text=Under the Internal Revenue Code, candidate for elective public office. 5. 8/7/2020: Motion of Official Committee of Tort Claimants Enforcing Automatic Stay ...Against Middle Tennessee Council Arising From Transfers of Estate Property 5. On July 1, 2020, the Middle Tennessee Council transferred substantially all of its real and personal property to an irrevocable asset protection trust (the “Transfer”) for no consideration. At the time of the Transfer, the BSA had reversionary property interests in the assets pursuant to the BSA’s and Middle Tennessee Council’s organizational charters and bylaws. The Transfer, made with the knowledge of BSA’s bankruptcy, violated the automatic stay and is void ab initio. Despite having a self-admitted interest in the transferred properties, BSA has not taken any action to enforce the automatic stay and restore the estate’s property rights notwithstanding the Tort Claimants’ Committee demands. Therefore, The Tort Claimants’ Committee seeks an order of the Court voiding the Transfer as a violation of the automatic stay. ... 47. There can be no dispute that the Middle Tennessee Council knew of the BSA’s bankruptcy case; indeed, it accepted the protection of this Court prior to effectuating the Transfer. The Middle Tennessee Council’s internal communications expressly state that the Transfer was planned in anticipation of BSA’s bankruptcy case. Moreover, the Middle Tennessee Council was one among hundreds of other Local Councils that enjoyed the benefits of the Preliminary Injunction in BSA’s bankruptcy case. Finally, and as noted above, a member of the Middle Tennessee Council’s executive board published an opinion in a local newspaper on March 3, 2020, concerning the effects of BSA’s chapter 11 case on the Middle Tennessee Council. 48. The Court should void the Transfer of the Assets as a violation of the automatic stay. The BSA is in a precarious position with respect to its ability to successful reorganize. Without access to the Middle Tennessee Council’s assets, which are property of BSA’s bankruptcy estate, it will only make it more difficult for BSA to propose a plan that fairly compensates the victims of childhood sexual abuse claims. 6. A Scout is Courteous...we can agree to disagree and respectfully discuss those differences...again and again and maybe learn. In the past when I have expressed my opinions about the wearing a neckerchief, I have stated my reasons even specs while respecting those with different and obviously wrong ( joke) opinions. Maybe ball caps are the future? Bolos? My $0.02,
  7. Well done SpaceX, NASA, and astronauts Robert Bahnken and Douglas Hurley. Scout Salute and thanks for good news, smart news. (NASA photo)
  8. Most who were downsized/rightsized, some multiple times in last 40+ years, in groups small and large (1,000's, 10,000's ), during difficult times and circumstances were good people who did not deserve it. For those who did deserve it, well this is a scout forum. From my experiences, suck it up and move on - budget and negotiate, maintain medical insurance, network, be open to new ventures (even temporary), stay positive...It is hard and lousy but the alternatives are worse. My $0.02,
  9. IMHO, infection rate is not about age, race, or income, rather exposure, susceptibility, and protective measures. "Relatively large cohorts sleeping in the same cabin and engaging in regular singing and cheering likely contributed to transmission (9). Use of cloth masks, which has been shown to reduce the risk for infection (10), was not universal. An ongoing investigation will further characterize specific exposures associated with infection, illness course, and any secondary transmission to household members. Physical distancing and consistent and correct use of cloth masks should be emphasized as important strategies for mitigating transmission in congregate settings." My $0.01
  10. Brian, just curious, will your college or its home state require you to produce a recent negative covid-19 test and/or quarantine for 14 days on campus?

  12. 7/30/2020 : Related or coincidence, the BSA gave notice to the Bankruptcy Court that they are retaining and compensating Baker & Hostetler LLP to serve as legal counsel with regard to data privacy issues. https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/cmsvol2/pub_47373/836594_1056.pdf BakerHostetler National Privacy and Data Protection Team "...the elite team of attorneys is consistently selected by general counsel worldwide to address their most critical issues. 13. 7/30/2020: Michigan Crossroads Council letter outlining rules to comply with Gov. Whitmer Executive Order 2020-160. https://nbc25news.com/news/local/boy-scouts-of-america-outline-social-distancing-practices-in-michigan Dear Scouting Families and Leaders, One of our main priorities is the health and safety of our Scouts, leaders and Scouting families. Thank you for the tremendous response to the Restarting Scouting plan, and for your personal leadership in helping make Scouting available through various means – whether Scouting in your unit and your family is done through in-person, at-home, and/or virtual activities, you are making a difference and you are appreciated. Yesterday, Governor Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-160 which states that the following restrictions take effect July 31, 2020. Furthermore, the order and restrictions below apply to all in-person Scouting related activities, meetings and events. Rules on gatherings, events, and large venues. (Page 5) A social gathering or organized event among persons not part of the same household is permitted, but only to the extent that: 1.The gathering or event is designed to ensure that persons not part of the same household maintain six feet of distance from one another; 2.If it is indoors, the gathering or event does not exceed 10 people; and 3.If it is outdoors, the gathering or event does not exceed 100 people. The above restrictions do not apply to Regions 6 and 8. (Traverse City area and the UP) Units participating in in-person Scouting meetings, activities, and events are required to follow the guidelines and restrictions noted above and to follow all Restarting Scouting guidelines issued by the Michigan Crossroads Council for the protection of our Scouting community. To include but not limited to the following guidelines: - Youth and adult waivers for all participants - Part A & B Medical Form (Annual Health and Medical Record) - Supplemental Medical Permission Form (as defined) - Unit Activity Checklist - Practice social distancing protocols - Use of masks and/or shields - Frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer - Cleaning and sanitizing general public areas
  14. 7/29/2020: The Coalition of Abused Scouts for Justice submitted verified statement to Bankruptcy court: (in part): 1. On or around July 18, 2020, the members of the Coalition, by and through their counsel, formed the Coalition and retained Brown Rudnick LLP and Blank Rome LLP (together, the “Coalition Counsel”) to represent them in connection with the Coalition’s claims and interests in respect of the Debtors and the Bankruptcy Cases. The Coalition is comprised of more than 10,000 sexual abuse victims (collectively, the “Coalition Members”). Each Coalition Member, a party-in-interest, holds claims against the Debtors that may include, but are not necessarily limited to, unsecured claims and administrative claims. https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/cmsvol2/pub_47373/836358_1053.pdf
  15. Victimized organizations* should press Blackbaud to provide third party identity and credit monitoring. * Which organization will lead? My money (again $0.02) is on Boys & Girls Club of Delaware
  16. Presumably $350K (as all internet posts are true ) paid in equivalent Bitcoin.
  17. @Jameson76 perhaps this further assurance from Blackbaud will reduce your skepticism ...While most in the cybersecurity community are not so trusting of hardened criminals, Blackbaud has publicly expressed their optimism that the cybercriminals destroyed the data and/or won’t misuse, disseminate or make the data publicly available: “We have credible confirmation that the data was destroyed for two reasons: The cyber ransom business model is dependent on the cybercriminal not disclosing the information or they lose credibility and leverage. We worked with a third-party expert in communicating with the cybercriminal, and we only paid the ransom when we received credible confirmation that the data was destroyed… as a precautionary measure, we have hired outside experts to monitor the Internet, including the dark web, and they have found no evidence that any information was ever released, and we will continue to monitor,” a Blackbaud spokesperson said. https://schneiderdowns.com/our-thoughts-on/blackbaud-breach-alert So hrrrumph, it is quite simple actually, the criminals have their good name to protect and as a further look-good-after-our-blunder measure Blackbaud hired internet watchers to see if any stolen ( now encrypted by criminals) data appears. No worry, rest assured. And not likely a bootleg copy of a copy will be sold since the ransom paid was a staggering $350K (Bitcoin) for client data from 125 or more non-profit and educational institutions. Oh and good to know that the BSA was not target rather us. That is comforting. IMHO, Blackeye should offer a year + 174 days of free identity and credit monitoring by a third party to all persons affected. My $0.02, ( two Lincoln sense, no Bitcoin)
  18. Be Prepared - aspirin bottle (regarding Blackbaud's delay in reporting and ransom paid) On July 16, 2020, Blackbaud, a U.S. based cloud computing provider and one of the world’s largest providers of education administration, fundraising, and financial management software, notified users of its services that it had suffered a ransomware attack in May 2020 in relation to personal data stored on their servers. Numerous colleges, universities, foundations, and other non-profits across the U.K., U.S. and Canada were affected. Blackbaud’s handling of the attack has raised some questions. Blackbaud has confirmed in a statement on its website that they paid the cyber-criminal’s ransom demand in return for confirmation that the stolen data had been destroyed. Paying ransom demands is not unlawful, but it goes against the official advice issued by many law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. In addition, Blackbaud has faced criticism for taking many weeks to inform its customers of the breach. 19. ...Most often such character development is achieved by means of outdoor programs where scouts can be close to nature. But there are ways of learning conservation and leadership skills in an outdoor setting that do not involve camping, and that is where the Sea Scouts come in. In 1910 Lord Baden-Powell’s brother Warrington published a book in Britain about Sea Scouting. By 1912 Arthur Carey of Massachusetts used the book to establish the Sea Scouting program in the U.S. Despite an endorsement from the Secretary of the Navy, Sea Scouting in America started off slowly and for its first years was largely confined to the Atlantic coast. The Great Lakes, however, are a natural setting for Sea Scouting, and by 1918 Sea Scout units were being established in Wisconsin. The entire national organization was restructured in 1922 under the leadership of Thomas Keane of New York, and consequently during the 1920s membership in Sea Scouting exploded. Sea Scouting reached the Northwoods in the spring of 1929 when a Sea Scout unit was established in the town of Mercer. A. H. Rice, the Scoutmaster for the local Boy Scout Troop became the unit Skipper. Richard Roberts became First Mate of the Mercer “Ship.” The choice of Mercer as the first in the Northwoods was a direct result of Thomas Keane’s aggressive recruitment program. Keane had instructed scouting’s regional headquarters in Chicago to look to towns and villages not large enough to support a full Sea Scout program but still active enough to recruit teenage boys for a separate Sea Scout “patrol unit.” With an active Boy Scout organization, Mercer was perfect for this... 20. Camp Alaflo (AL) ..."Our biggest thing this year is really getting people out to get out of the house a little bit because they've been cooped up for such a long time and we just want them to enjoy the scouting experience," said Camp Alaflo Camp Director Joe Maxwell. In addition to masks and temperature checks, the staff is sanitizing high touch areas like the shotgun range. The camp has even changed the dining experience. "We are delivering food in the morning where we usually eat in the trading post and then in the evening we are eating in shifts which really helps out and is able to spread people out and not be so close together," Maxwell added. Despite new rules and regulations, the scouts are not seeing a change in the amount of fun they are having. More in video at source: https://www.wtvy.com/2020/07/29/boy-scouts-attend-camp-alaflo/
  21. @Mikey52971 on behalf of the moderators of scouter.com, welcome.
  22. Not that Canada would allow travel to/from US, but I would like to hear Terry Grant speak about Scouting and outdoor program. https://www.scouts.ca/about/who-we-are/chief-scout.html
