  1. 2/22/2021: BSA Attorneys filed a motion asking Judge Silverstein to extend a preliminary injunction (expires March 19) that halted lawsuits against local BSA councils and sponsoring organizations during the bankruptcy. "Attorneys for the BSA argue that maintaining the injunction is critical to restructuring efforts, including enabling local councils and chartered organizations to participate in mediation and, ultimately, make “a substantial contribution” to a settlement and global resolution of abuse claims. Allowing lawsuits against local councils and sponsoring organizations to proceed will make it difficult, if not impossible, for the BSA to both equitably compensate abuse survivors and ensure that the organization can continue to carry out its charitable mission, they contend." The motion asks for an extension to July 19. .... "Attorneys for the BSA noted in Monday’s court filing that the tort claimants committee has received some 327,000 pages of documents regarding local council assets, the nature of restrictions on those assets, and historical transactions." 2. Given the current State of Emergency and the needs of their communities, perhaps repurpose this "aggregate award" . I'd like to see scouts helping others. https://takecareoftexas.org/teens/boy-scouts My $0.02,
  3. FYI: Tues Feb 23: CBS Evening News' Nora O'Donnell interviews Eagles in this Inaugural class.
  4. North Carolina: Scouts honor the service and sacrifice of a 14 year James Gillies —“a beardless, unarmed youth”—was the bugler for American General "Light Horse" Harry Lee. During an impromptu reconnaissance mission, Gillies was killed by the British Army near the current-day Oak Ridge/Summerfield town limits on Oak Ridge Road. Interesting video interview with scouts including scout bugler: https://myfox8.com/news/buckley-report-the-story-of-a-bugler-boy/ More at source link: https://www.summerfieldnc.gov/index.asp?SEC=C3FB91F1-C656-4336-B855-D9948EAC060A&DE=EE3B01BF-20EB-46B8-8780-EA7E40D04899
  5. I remarked about ladders. The above does not apply to ladders, rather elevated platforms (towers?) and decks (which do not have the rails ladders do). If you built a 8ft tower with the specified safety features, you would be within OSHA rules. That lesson would be more valuable to scouts than limiting height to under 5ft as if that is a magic safety number. Lawsuits will happen no matter the height of fall. Oops .....ice.....
  6. ..."are attempting to require personal fall arrest systems for their subcontractors working on ladders 6 feet or higher." Although the OSHA standards do not require fall protection for workers on fixed ladders below 24 feet or on portable ladders, we encourage employers to provide additional protection. https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/standardinterpretations/2000-01-13 IMHO, a scout should know how to safely use a step ladder and extension ladder just as they naturally know how to climb trees. 7. "IRVING, Texas, Feb. 18, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Nearly 1,000 young women from across the country are taking their place in history as the first female Eagle Scouts after collectively earning more than 30,000 merit badges and providing an estimated 130,000 hours of community service - even amid a pandemic. The Boy Scouts of America will honor this inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts during a virtual event on February 21st titled 'Be the Change'—a celebration of these young women and their achievements, and a call to action for all young people to continue working to make a positive impact on their communities and the nation. ..." 8. Perhaps the BSA should "be prepared" for a delay as has occurred repeatedly this past year, Specifically, have a list of most marketable assets (Judge approved) to liquify and reschedule the May Meeting to September/October (blame covid). My $0.02,
  9. "The judge presiding over the Boys Scout of America bankruptcy is weighing a request to allow insurance companies to serve document requests on a sampling of 1,400 people who have filed sexual abuse claims. ...In addition to wanting to question alleged abuse survivors, the insurance companies on Wednesday requested permission to question and collect documents from 15 plaintiffs’ attorneys who personally signed hundreds of claims. Claim forms typically must be signed by the claimants themselves, but in the days leading up to the deadline last November, some attorneys signed several hundred claim forms a day. ...An attorney for the Boy Scouts told Judge Silverstein that the Irving, Texas-based organization needs to exit bankruptcy by late summer and hopes to file a plan within the next few weeks, with a hearing in April seeking court approval of the proposal. ...The judge gave no indication on when she would rule." 10. Good point. I recall the swine flu fiasco of 1976.. https://www.history.com/news/swine-flu-rush-vaccine-election-year-1976 Due to the incomplete ( and wrong) science at that time and fear of unexplained possible side-effects such as Guillain-Barre Syndrome , I and 80% of the US did not get the flu shot that year. Here's a photo of one of few, an unidentified Eagle Scout, who did get a swine flu shot. That said, I will get my covid vaccination as soon as my turn comes - Feb? March? June? August?
  11. More directly by the U.S. Public Health Service (Surgeon General) which is part of Health and Human Services.
  12. Feb 12, 2021 Virginia. Perhaps the last adult Hornaday awardee. ASM David G. Brickley recently earned the Boy Scouts of America William T. Hornaday Gold Medal for Distinguished Service to Natural Resource Conservation at the Boy Scouts’ National Capital Area Council’s annual meeting. Brickley has been active in the Boy Scouts of America for more than 40 years, and currently serves an assistant scoutmaster of the all-girl troop 1888 in Fairfax. He’s also the founder of the 9/11 National Memorial Trail, 1,300-mile biking, hiking and motor-friendly trail that connects the three 9/11 memorial sites via six states and the District of Columbia (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington, D.C.). For more information or to donate, visit 911trail.org. ... “As a life-long advocate of our trails, greenways and conservation efforts in Virginia, this inspiring award is truly humbling and appreciated,” said David G. Brickley, founder of the September 11th National Memorial Trail Alliance, and Boy Scouts of America awardee. “Our great outdoors are truly a place of respite and healing, which is why I’ve championed and helped create the 9/11 National Memorial Trail to honor and commemorate those lives lost that tragic day.” More on Mr. Brickley and the 9/11 National Memorial Trail at source: https://princewilliamliving.com/former-va-delegate-david-g-brickley-awarded-boy-scouts-of-america-william-t-hornaday-gold-medal/#prettyPhoto
  13. Yes, that would help differentiate scouting from high school (need 4yrs of English, 2yrs of History, 2yrs foreign language,...). How many Eagle required MBs are there now? My sons were drawn to colleges that offered "design your own degree" and/or multiple minors. - hike around the mountains out there before deciding what mountain or mountains to climb.
  14. I'm sure there is that but we are seeing parents with planned high school roadmaps for college - AP classes, the "right" extracurriculars, SAT prep, more SAT prep, writing courses, scholarship applications, pre-college summer sessions, ...a lot to do...
  15. Historical note, 12 year old Eagle Scouts are not a recent phenomenon. Some on this forum earned Eagle at age 12 back in the 70's and perhaps earlier. FCFY yeah, over the years our helicopter parents often had a common goal that their son would complete Eagle before beginning high school. Today, we see 12 year olds far exceeding the merit badge requirements for Eagle. Maybe Eagle Palms MB requirements should be 25, 50, 100? Or maybe, Advancement needs reconsideration? My $0.02,
  16. Some history http://www.bsa604.org/Cabin.htm The "Boy Scout Cabin" as it is still referred to was erected through the efforts of Mr. Frank Hutchinson, inspired by this devotion to his Son and the Scout Movement, during the 1932 Depression years. In the Flood of 1937 the cabin floated off its foundation and landed upon the Ohio River Levee, Mr. Hutchinson and the Church Trustees had it replaced upon its original foundation where it served 20 years many young men of Lawrenceburg. In 1957 as a part of the Church's greatest building and remodeling program Mr. Jack Anderson, building committee chairman, prevailed upon the City of Lawrenceburg to vacate New Street to allow more room to build the new Church School building and relocate the Cabin. New footers, foundations, concrete floor, fireplace, water, gas heat, and a new roof was installed. https://troop.bsa604.org/history/ ... Due to “progress”, the (old) cabin is gone forever. It was demolished in 2012 to make room for an alley to access the city’s new event center. The new Scout Cabin is located at the end of High Street by the tunnel. The cabin is really available to non-sport related groups, but has a dedicated scout room that is behind the rustic cabin facade
  17. Lawrenceburg, IN "is converting its Boy Scout cabin into an emergency shelter equipped with blankets, cots and water for any person or family in need... All Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and organizational meetings held between Tuesday and Feb. 16 are suspended during the week that the cabin will be used as an emergency shelter." https://www.wlwt.com/article/city-of-lawrenceburg-to-convert-boy-scout-cabin-into-emergency-shelter-during-cold-weather/35452978
  18. There is a difference between being appreciated and being recognized, a difference between achievement and award. Some prefer a sincere individual thank you, others a more official public praise. Some are satisfied with their achievement without recognition. My $0.02,

  20. Georgia The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) collected close to 700 Christmas trees this year to help improve fish habitat at Clarks Hill Lake. The materials are pretty simple for creating the habitat. All it takes is a some metal twine, a concrete cinder block, and drop it in. The USACE has partnered with the Boy Scouts of America and Greenbrier High School Fishing team to build habitat. If you would like to volunteer, you can reach out to their office to see what opportunities are available. Christmas trees make great habitat, but only last about 3 years before they start to decompose. That’s why the USACE has started adding bamboo and recycled materials to their arsenal. They utilize old irrigation pipes from former projects, invasive golden bamboo found around the lake, and even old pieces of the oxygen line system. The recycled materials can last for decades. The bamboo doesn’t last as long, but does outlast the Christmas trees. Evan Brashier , fisheries biologist for USACE, added, “it will last up to 10 years without breaking down as long as it’s underwater”. Air chambers in the bamboo keep it upright. The bamboo also presents a larger horizontal and vertical profile that bass will suspend in and above. These structures are all different, but attract the same general type of sunfish that then attract larger fish like bass, striper, and hybrids. source with video: https://www.wrdw.com/2021/02/05/close-to-700-christmas-trees-collected-to-improve-fish-habitat-at-clarks-hill/ No mention of the number of fish hooks snagged and lost,

  22. Agree. Looks like a doubleheader coming Feb 17. Rule 2004 https://casedocs.omniagentsolutions.com/cmsvol2/pub_47373/870498_1972.pdf ...authorizing Hartford and Century to serve subpoenas, written discovery, including interrogatories and document requests, and deposition notices pursuant to Rule 2004 on a sampling of persons who have filed sexual abuse claims (“Abuse Claims”) in these cases and (ii) providing relief from the requirements of Local Rule 3007-1(f) to permit (but not require) parties in interest in these Chapter 11 cases to file omnibus claim objections raising common legal issues to multiple claims and that may, most efficiently, be subject to resolution if heard together.. Exhibit A on page 27 There are numerous joinders and objections to above, a deluge arriving at the objection deadline today. Procedure 2019 - I mentioned earlier today
