  1. National, before releasing Sustainability Merit Badge next month at Jambo, strongly consider reinstating environmentalist Kim Kuska as a scouter! from Gannett Since the 1970s, the Eagle Scout and adult Scout leader-turned-whistle-blower (Kim Kuska) has worked to protect the plant from extinction at Camp Pico Blanco, a Boy Scout camp nestled in the mountains along the Little Sur River south of Monterey, Calif. The camp is home to nearly 50 percent of all known specimens of Dudley’s lousewort, a flowering fern-like plant found in only three places in the world. But over the past four decades, Scout officials and camp staff have threatened its existence repeatedly by harvesting old-growth trees it needs to survive, crushing some of the few remaining plants and introducing potentially competitive species. Under state law, it is illegal to harm a plant that is classified as rare. The camp also cut down several trees in the old-growth forest in 2011 without a permit, a Scout official acknowledged. At each turn, Kuska was there to document the misdeeds. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is investigating the 2011 incident as a result of questions from the Center for Investigative Reporting. While the Boy Scouts have drawn national attention for their intolerance toward gays, the organization also has compiled a poor record on environmental protection. In 2009, Hearst Newspapers reported that the Scouts clear-cut tens of thousands of acres of forestland across the country and operated a dam at Camp Pico Blanco that killed at least 30 federally protected steelhead trout. The camp installed a fish ladder as part of a no-fault settlement... more info and photos at these links http://www.mydesert.com/article/2013...-s-destruction http://forcechange.com/66842/reinsta...nto-boy-scouts My $0.02
  2. we had a few boys who refused to part with their neckerchief So they do not want to "obey the Law of the Pack"? Was this tradition clearly explained and understood from the beginning? Time for a conference with scout and his family where they are charged $7 so the pack tradition can continue or where their scout can be dismissed. If this problem becomes pervasive, drop the loaner tradition. My $0.02,
  3. As of yesterday, My Profile returned. I exist. I am bona fide.
  4. Thanks, both stand corrected...for now. So should we 1. Take our chances it will not be signed into law, but if it does hire lawyers to overturn it. 2. Bestow Eagle rank to those gay Calif, scouts recently denied as a show of goodwill and hopefully killing the bill. Bigger forces come into play when new revenue sources (churches, colleges, scouts) are identified Another $0.01 for the IRS line dancing classes..
  5. I attempted to post that 4 days ago (5/31) and it now magically appears on 6/4, sort of like snail-mailing a letter to IT and having them post it?? This bill certainly has problems, but politically it may become law if only briefly as National did not address those recent, high profile California scouts whose Eagle application was denied. My $0.02 which may take 4 days to deliver. P.S. Wow this posting is listed and reachable in the Issues and Politics! Good news.
  6. Yes, I mistyped. My post (which disappeared and did not post) was hopefully more accurate in stating what the next step would be and if passed which youth groups would be affected and which would not from the bill. Will it pass into law? Maybe, maybe not. Another annoyance, I still cannot list recent posts to forums: Open and Discussion , Issues & Politics. Been 3 months.
  7. Tried to create a new post about California Boy Scouts having their non-profit tax status revoke but failed with error: Edit Conversion Empty Response
  8. The California Senate in a 27-9 vote revoked the tax-exempt status of all California youth groups that discriminate (youth member or adult leaders) on the basis of sexual orientation. This effects Boy Scouts (councils, maybe some charter organizations?) and another youth group Capitol Resource Institute. "The law would have no effect on the tax-exempt status of churches, many of which discriminate against gays and lesbians." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/30/boy-scouts-nonprofit-status_n_3362079.html
  9. After successfully posted on 5/27, a few minutes later I add a comment that "sonuvagun it posted". That comment to this post seems to have disappeared. My profile as another forum member noted is still missing as is his post which followed this post. Is there a data loss at page breaks?
  10. Profile no more profile to me, whither must I wander - apologies to Robert Louis Stevenson
  11. [h=1]if it ain't broke, don't fix it - Bert Lance[/h]
  12. I tried to post 4 times, succeeded once. Had a Memorial Day message and photo to post and the error I received was something about an "Empty Response". I see recent posts but can't get to them, no matter if I use filter, topic, and user profile. Running Win 7 Pro and Firefox 21.0 and this is the only online forum that I have posting and search problems. Well let us see if this posts.
  13. http://www.scouter.com/forum/open-discussion-program/369740-who-can-remove-a-cubmaster My experience, I have seen Council remove a unit leader (as in remove from Scouting) more often than IH or National. Sometimes Council pressures an IH to do it. Reasons could be a youth protection issue, financial mismanagement, membership qualification, or somebody doesn't like somebody...but rarely will the reason be stated. My $0.02
  14. Some local units here already admit girls into Cub and Boy scouts http://www.wgbhnews.org/post/cambridge-boy-scout-troop-bucks-national-trend-gay-participation
  15. The Mormon Church announced support for the membership policy change allowing gay scouts but not gay adult leaders. http://www.lds.org/church/news/church-issues-statement-on-boy-scouts-of-america?cid=%20HP000057&lang=eng “The current BSA proposal constructively addresses a number of important issues that have been part of the ongoing dialogue, including consistent standards for all BSA partners, recognition that Scouting exists to serve and benefit youth rather than Scout leaders, a single standard of moral purity for youth in the program, and a renewed emphasis for Scouts to honor their duty to God." http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/mormon-church-pleased-boy-scouts-proposal-19044828#.UXpF8MqyIzI
  16. To channel OGE "Don't trust anyone over 30." - Jack Weinberg
  17. Agree. At least if this resolution is approved, the gay scout could receive his earned Eagle rank, but then at age 18 his involvement in scouting would be over. So accept gays as scouts but don't retain them as adult leaders. ????
  18. OGE, I will miss our honest, direct posts and helpful advice but I think you are headed to higher summit of old scouters.
  19. I had to dig to find Papadaddy's post. There is was as the most recent post in this topic, so selected the topic and it was not listed. Selected your profile Papadaddy, saw this post, selected GO TO POST and same thing. Finally went to this topic and FIltered with Today and found it! What a hassle. In the past 6 weeks or so since the software upgrade, there have been new topics that I would have liked to have posted and discussed but I am not "authorized". Please fix this great scout forum!
  20. Depends on the number of scouts taking Rifle Shooting MB and a free shooting period. Rifle Shooting Option A requires a minimum of 40 rounds for a scout who is a marksman at the start. 80+ rounds is more common.
  21. I want Scouting to reach more kids, all kids that want to join. We need access to where they are, the public schools. There are workarounds for the Pledge of Allegiance, swearing into office, taking the stand in court, joining the armed forces...and likely the Scout Oath and Law too. Another $0.02
  22. I think a win, i.e. reaching more kids and thus increasing membership, is possible by ending all discrimination (gays, atheists, girls) via local option. We need to get back into schools, military bases,... My $0.02 or more likely 2 aspirin as it will be painful no matter what at this point.
