  1. Another good talk, this time at Jambo Educated and SKILLED Work Smart AND HARD. A scout is Clean but NOT AFRAID TO GET DIRTY.
  2. True. Your SM should have a scout conference regarding the Scout Law with this young man. Your troop needs a new AC. You did right.
  3. Hydration is part of it, but you also have to cool the body. On high humidity days, sweat evaporates less and cools the body less. The body responds by sweating more in an attempt to cool more thus causing dehydration. Fails due to humid air, so less activity and more break intervals in cooler spots - shade, lake, etc. Air quality is another issue. As power plants respond to higher electrical demand (air conditioning) there are more air pollutants, smog.
  4. Great stuff Scouter99, thanks for link. My unit has had more success with patrol builds - patrol boxes and Klondike sleds than with individual builds of personal gear.
  5. Kevin Rose, among his many other accomplishments in media and tech, is an Eagle Scout.
  6. Yesterday, a 30 yr old died hiking in New Hampshire White Mts. The cause has not been determined but heat and dehydration are likely factors. Weather is worse today. http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/Newsroom/2013/Q3/SR_hiker_death_071813.html
  7. When attempting a text reply, I occasionally get this perplexing error Edit Conversation The string you entered for the image verification did not match what was displayed.
  8. Regarding some negative media reports, National needs to definitively respond to reports that Jamboree discriminates against obese/overweight scouts. Definitive as in onsite videos showing the temp/humidity, red flag warnings, the activity levels, exercise experts (particularly military), past experience at A.P. Hill and how that formulated changes in requirements and preparation - "physically strong". Show the benefits of the decision (heat related injuries are down) to scouts. My $0.02
  9. Hot and humid everywhere in East. Read everyday has been a red flag day at Jambo. Hope scouts get a weather break soon. "Scouts are encouraged to drink water, and they sport a color-coded chart on a lanyard around their neck that helps them determine how much they should be taking in. When Scouts are alerted (signs and phone apps?) that the day has a green flag, they know to drink a half-quart of water per hour. Yellow means three-fourths of a quart per hour. Red flags mean to drink a quart (per hour). Black -- the highest-level caution -- lets Scouts know to drink even more water and avoid highly strenuous activities." http://www.dailymail.com/News/ScoutJamboree2013/201307180113
  10. Some visitors are more equal than others. VIP visitors may enter and participate in program areas, etc. "The Summit officially threw open its gates to visitors on Wednesday, attracting 1,600 people within the first hour and a half of opening. The Boy Scouts of America says that up to 50,000 visitors may attend the event, but when asked for the number of passes sold, they said they are not tracking these totals." http://www.register-herald.com/jamboree/x1724755848/Scouts-welcome-visitors
  11. Wait there are more!!! Here are FIVE more bronze statues in or around the Scott Visitor Center. Walter Scott, Stephen Bechtel, and Jim Justice either!! http://www.wnct.com/story/22843337/adventure-begins-at-summit-bechtel-family-national-scout-reserve-with-the-2013-national-scout-jamboree Morgantown industrialist J.W. Ruby and his wife, philanthropist Hazel Ruby http://www.dailymail.com/News/ScoutJamboree2013/201307170027 Thrifty? Well at least they didn't chisel faces into Mount Irving (I made that up, but I would not be surprised if there is a Mount Irving there).
  12. STATUES! Unbelievable, whatever happened to just naming buildings or campsites? http://www.register-herald.com/jamboree/x316296927/Let-the-Jamboree-begin The statues are Bob Mazzuca, Jack Furst, Wayne Perry, former Gov. Joe Manchin
  13. Sustainability requirements finally released...some good discussion points, particularly population growth. Working on a farm would be a nice addition. Add to Stuff - plan how to recycle iPods, phones, pc's, monitors, CFLs, batteries, ... http://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2013/07/15/sustainability-merit-badge-requirements-released/
  14. Saw this article about Troop 724, one of two special needs troops in the St. Louis area: http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/metro/troop-offers-haven-for-scouts-who-won-t-give-up/article_2d646403-e9ea-54d3-9325-346708adad73.html This special needs troop offers a "special" service to community - a 16 member color guard with distinct uniform. "The troop has performed on many occasions. “Last year we were in the opening ceremonies for Veterans Day†at a St. Louis event, Scoutmaster Joe Vaughan said. This year, Boeing Co., for which the troop is official color guard, has offered to send the boys to Pasadena, Calif., to march in the Rose Bowl Parade, he added."
  15. Some do, some don't. Basically the intent is to keep everyone on the same page - who does what, what is expected, etc. And of course, you must have yet another mission statement or vision statement or both?? Your characterization of by-laws as "guidelines" is fair as there are always exceptions and new circumstances to consider. Do you add revision upon revision or do you trust adult leaders to make fair, sound decisions? My $0.02
  16. Saturday's news articles use phrases such as "health-conscious", "physically demanding", "tech use encouraged", "working local service projects",... good stuff!
  17. In summer of 2010, at least two bears were shot and killed at Philmont. http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/environment/bear-shot-after-attack-at-nm-scout-camp
  18. Some more info and video. The troop was asked to leave camp. Not clear about who all made the decision to shoot a young black bear. http://www.ksl.com/?sid=25967748&nid...cid=featured-1
  19. From that article "...division (of Wildlife Resources) employees had given a presentation to the Scouts earlier about proper bear safety, including thoroughly cleaning up all food and disposing of any leftovers in bear-proof containers." Thanks for posting. Hopefully another BSA incident report forthcoming that we can all read and learn from.
  20. At least 5.000 tickets already sold. "Visitors are also invited to the Saturday evening stadium show and a closing ceremony complete with Zambelli fireworks." http://www.dailymail.com/News/201307100239
