They may or may not be registered adult leaders. More often I think, they are just skilled parents who step in and fill a short term need. They need no uniform, patch , or beads. They are Morning Coffee Maker - a scout is trustworthy but at coffee I draw a line. a thick line. Making coffee, like setting a fracture, building a skyscraper, requires an experienced, skilled professional. We have one adult in our unit so qualified that the mere brewing awakens sleeping adults more surely than the loudest Reveille. Stove Guy - gets the most stubborn stoves to work under the worse conditions. Outdoors Guy - usually has a Bass Pro, Cabelas cap and wears camo. Knows how to spin cast, start an outboard, handle boat trailer, setup camp kitchen, catch and cook game, makes jerky, has the most comfortable and functional camp chairs. If he setups his satellite dish, he is likely watching Duck Dynasty by campfire. Trailer backup man - can backup the troop trailer through an obstacle course of trees and boulders. Graphic Arts Guy - need lettering on a trailer or a banner, printing done And I'm sure there are more...

Many New England scout troops schedule a Nantucket bike trip, for some it is an annual trip. Take the ferry, rent or take bikes, bike around island, go to the beach, and thriftily tent at Camp Richard, a 100 acre scout camp gifted to the island Boy Scouts in the early 1970s by the Nantucket Civic League "Cape Cod & Islands Council received a $3.5 million offer from Atlantic Development to purchase 30 acres within Camp Richard, according to Bob Graves, the president of the Nantucket District Committee of the Boy Scouts of America." Local scout leaders (Nantucket District Committee) are attempting to block to sale by transferring deed ownership to Camp Richard Campers Association Barnstable Superior Court judge Gary Nickerson is hearing the lawsuit filed by Council against scout leaders trying to block the sale of part of Camp Richards. In Mass, deed restrictions expire in 30 years unless reinstated. "The deed transfer from the Nantucket District Committee to the Camp Richard Campers Association sought to reinstate the restriction." http://www.ack.net/JudgedeniesLandCo...ment081313.htm

This is like hoping to restart a fire by throwing a bucket of ice water on fading embers. Even more puzzling, the success/failure to reverse declining Venturing membership will be unmeasurable since Part 4 Change in Membership Reporting now counts Venturing, Varsity, and Sea Scouts together!

“I felt proud…†That was the response 15 year old Masyn Buchanan gave when asked how he felt after receiving the Summit Navy SEAL Challenge Award at the 2013 National Jamboree. ...The PST (Physical Screening Test, which is the same test given to all Navy personnel attempting to become a SEAL) consists of a 500 yard swim within 12 minutes, 30 seconds; 50-90 push-up within 2 minutes; 50 curl-ups in less than 2 minutes; 10 pull-ups; and a 1.5 mile run within 9 minutes 30 seconds. http://buford.patch.com/groups/announcements/p/summit-navy-seal-challenge. Congratulations Masyn. Well done. Note: According to this article, 44 Scouts and Venturers earned the award

NFAA Basic Archery Instructor Class
RememberSchiff replied to Sakitama's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Yes. Not to worry a USA Archery/NFAA Level 1 is a basic introductory course - safety, terminology, FORM, and FUN. Many taking the course are teenage camp counselors with little or no experience. That said, pay attention as there will be a quiz at the end of class to complete certification on information presented. Relax and have fun. -
From Oct, 23, 2010 http://www.register-herald.com/todaysfrontpage/x1744211043/Boy-Scouts-of-America "jamboree... will draw an estimated 50,000 Boy Scouts and 300,000 visitors to the first Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, which, BSA officials revealed Friday, will take place July 15-24, 2013." Actual: 30,037 youth and adult participants, 15,732 visitor days ( a visitor may have attended more than one day)

Hmmm, that is definitely thinking outside the box or patch. Thanks for the tip.

Those patches with the trademark backing are tough critters to pin for me. I use double-sided tape on the bottom half of patch to position, sew top half, remove double-sided tape, and finish sewing bottom half. Done. Don't have double-sided tape, then make a loop of single-sided tape. My $0.02,

For sewing: In your own unit(s), most members would likely know who you are and your position with that unit whether you are in uniform or not have a left sleeve position patch or not. At the district level, you will more likely interact with a variety of new people looking for help. An old way solution - elastic armbands. No need to buy additional shirts, nothing really to worry about it here, Your service says more than your uniform. My $0.02,

Well send your feedback to Jamboree Director Larry Pritchard who supposedly is "conducting a detailed evaluation process to get feedback from those involved" for the 2017 Jamboree. He said they will plan to do the Day of Service next time and called it a good lesson learned this time around. Changing our whole food delivery system to the Scouts was a big change, a huge risk for us and it turned out okay,†he said. All in all, Pritchard said he was satisfied with how the Jamboree went and looks forward to hearing feedback from Scouts in the near future. http://wvmetronews.com/planning-alre...2017-jamboree/

Bed Bugs and your unit
RememberSchiff replied to Basementdweller's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My unit has had to occasionally deal with head lice. We excluded the scout, as the school did, until his parents corrected the issue and the school nurse verified. As a leader, when it is a health and safety issue, you can't look at these measures as punishing anyone rather as protecting everyone. Quarantines are not punishment. Anyway, that was how we explained it to the scouts and their families. As a parent, I send my son to activities only if he is a healthy scout. I expect other parents to do the same as I expect my son to return a healthy scout. I expect adult leaders to send unhealthy scouts home. I have had no experience with bed bugs and scouts but I imagine the situation is much, much worse. My $0.000001 for being no help -
Net Promoter Score (Voice of the Scout)
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Open Discussion - Program
My understanding is that this is marketed towards other (non-BSA) non-profit organizations. -
FYI: BSA is co-hosting a 3 day seminar Sept 18-20 for non-profit leaders to learn how to track customer loyalty. Cost for meals & materials $225. "....the Net Promoter Score is a simple way to identify customer loyalty levels, improve experiences, and identify customers-at-risk. The Boy Scouts have customized its Voice of the Scout program in a manner that not only measures loyalty but also benchmarks mission critical experiences members are having. Since launching over two years ago, the program has offered insight into policy, programs and marketing at the national, regional, area and council levels. " "... The key to the non-profit approach is the development of driver questions that ensure expectations of all stakeholders and service recipients are being fulfilled, as these align to the mission of the organization." three day schedule http://mystrategicplan.com/wp-conten...nal_June18.pdf http://www.prweb.com/releases/2013/7/prweb10970277.htm http://mystrategicplan.com/nps/#day_schedule No mention of www.scouter.com to get effectiveness feedback from "loyal customers".

500 Scouts pre-registered and were provided with weekly workout plans and physical conditioning tips by the Navy 237 Scouts showed up to the SEAL Summit challenge where they needed to past the real PST run by SEAL and Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman sailors. 46 Scouts passed. "The decisions to keep the PST the same as the real SEAL standard came from a panel of SEALs who are Eagle scouts," said Capt. Duncan Smith, commanding officer, Naval Special Warfare Recruiting Directorate. "Both Officer and enlisted SEALS chaired the panel and the decision was backed by Admiral Sean Pybus, the former commander of Naval Special Warfare Command." "The guys who didn't pass got upset, but I told them it took me four tries before I passed it. I am a SEAL today though because I kept putting one foot in front of the other and working at it," said Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Justin Smith. from http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=75568 Mike Rowe's video on the course. https://summit.scouting.org/en/Jamboree2013/Documents/Summit_Seal_Challenge_Information.pdf Well done. Outstanding!!

"BSA doesn't need to curry favor with the locals. Locating there was more than enough." Besides being a scout and good neighbor, the BSA needs to curry political favor with the locals for financial reasons (as in pay for Summit) Last summer, the BSA assumed that they as a non-profit could surely rent out, tax-free (local and state taxes) the Summit to for-profit groups such as concert promoters etc. The BSA was wrong in that assumption. So for the past year, the BSA has hoped to amend the West Virginia constitution to allow the BSA an exemption but the BSA has been vague on the extent of outside leases and other non-profits stepped in wanting an exemption too. http://www.wvgazette.com/News/201208140245 http://old.scouter.com/Forums/viewThread.asp?threadID=363719&p=1

Public invited to Jambo
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Going to the next Jamboree?
Neither I nor that article stated that all visitors would have access. I stated that VIP visitors did, e.g.,American Legion. Koutz, Cook and Butler ended their day with an exhilarating and cooling 50 miles-per-hour glide down a 1,500-foot zip line. First, however, was a 30-minute climb up to the launch tower atop one of the highest hills on the site. "That was worse than marching through the jungle in Vietnam," reflected Koutz. Still, a big smile creased his face as the zip line adventure ended. "I’d do it again right now – if I didn’t have to climb up that hill again," he said. http://www.legion.org/scouting/216456/national-commander-impressed-scouting-site -
"The Jamboree chief medical officer, Dr. Glen Ault, estimates that up to 500 people per day have been treated for various injuries at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, and an average of about 15 people per day are taken to hospitals. The Jamboree has more than 500 medical personnel."

According to Doug Nelson the Miami Valley council, Mr. Gene Schulz was involved with the Lewis and Clark project which reenacted the explorers’ journey. The group had a display on the expedition at the Jamboree and Mr. Schulz was serving as a presenter and merit badge counselor. According to reports, he collapsed while walking from his camp, CPR attempts were unsuccessful. Condolences to his family from grateful scouts and scouters. http://www.wdtn.com/dpp/news/local/g...e#.Ue-60W3y32s
