  1. Sentinel947 WHAT? Someone UNDER 21 is allowed to be moderator of this forum? This is more jolting than my morning caffeine. What next, the Top 3 at National under 40? Super Moderator...And you outed yourself man...Wearing suspenders ain't gonna fool us anymore. Following BSA conventions, at most, maybe, Junior Assistant Moderator (JAM) or maybe a Moderator In Training (MIT, but then you would have to pay $100 for privilege to be refunded when old enough to be a Moderator) , disclaimer the above was meant to be humorous. Sentinel947 thanks for volunteering as a moderator of Camp Runamuck here.
  2. Does anyone have any news on release date and requirements? Thanks.
  3. Perhaps after this intermission, we can return to the OP topic?
  4. Generally for three day weekends (Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, Memorial Day,...), we plan scout activities
  5. "To do my duty to God and my country" I think that second part is overlooked. We all have the First Amendment right of freedom of religion. Maybe if we move away from "we are a private organization and can do what we want" mindset and think about our duty to respect the constitutional rights of others,,,be more in step with current American values and laws. My $0.02
  6. Is the camp still in the black and is it still being utilized? When I hear about attendance fluctuations, my first thoughts are about programming and facilities, not selling the camp(s). Local control methinks, not distant larger super-councils.
  7. Hacker scouts wannabees? I would like to see a breakout of Council expenses/revenues vs Camp(s) expenses/revenues. I am skeptical when a council bureaucrat says a camp(s) is 20, 25, 35% under-utilized, that usually means the camp revenue can't cover Council overhead expenses. My $0.02
  8. I wonder if this will "Light a Fire" at the National Annual Meeting in Nashville this week? http://www.scouting.org/nationalannualmeeting.aspx
  9. http://www.dailyherald.com/article/2...ews/140518337/ National is considering restructuring four councils -- " the Northwest Suburban Council, headquartered in Mount Prospect; the Des Plaines Valley Council, headquartered in La Grange; the Chicago Area Council, headquartered in Chicago; and the Calumet Council, headquartered in Munster, Indiana -- into one. There's also separate merger discussions between staff members at the Des Plaines Valley Council and the Three Fires Council, based in St. Charles. The Northeast Illinois Council, headquartered in Highland Park, was involved in consolidation discussions, but officials there decided to withdraw from those talks." Northwest Suburban Council will operate a recruitment center inside Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. "Called the Discovery Outpost, the storefront will contain displays and videos about all Scouting activities, but much of the focus will be on Scouting's connection with science, technology, engineering and mathematics, officials said." Anyway interesting details, in particular the section on Camps "In an April 24 email sent to Scouts and leaders, Boy Scout officials said "the issue of land management and camp properties is not relevant to" the discussion over council consolidation."
  10. Over the years I have often wished that Council owned, stored, and rented the PWD track. Maybe have OA setup track (instead of selling candy bars!!!!). A win-win? We have no space to store and piggyback on those packs with a track. Seems odd that we have a mindset to regionalize schools and other public services but our pack has to have its own track! (BTW, I disagree with the former) My $0.02
  11. "The only thing we can do is make our children aware and teach them to react when it happens and recognize what is going on before it happens." No. We can be parents and protect our kids, particularly from the KNOWN bad guys. If we recognize them at a scout activity, we remove them. Just as we are vigilant on our school grounds, neighborhoods, sports fields, wherever kids are, so too with scouts. Also at this scout event, it is not just scouts at risk here but all youth in attendance. Here's an example -- scout flea market fundraiser, Mom attends with her 6 yr boy who wanders away and is abducted. http://hamptonroads.com/2013/11/sex-...ction-va-beach Now imagine a similar scenario happens at another scout activity and afterward it is revealed that scout leaders were aware that sexual predator was present. Another $0.02 Tried to post this yesterday, but received database errors...
  12. Washington Post and Time reporting this morning...right on top of our breaking news.
  13. Still no report on NBC, Curry's employer. Saw reports on FOX news but not CBS, ABC, or other major news providers. Robert Gates was interviewed on Face the Nation today, no questions about BSA, of course, there were more important issues to discuss. Bias reporting, yeah I am beginning to wonder too.
  14. This appears to have occurred 10 years to the day that her brother Gordon Curry died. He was a medical tech in the USAF. Good job scouts!
  15. May 2, 2014 update http://www.ack.net/CivicLeagueCampRichardSuit050214.html The Nantucket Civic League is now a party to a lawsuit between the Nantucket Committee of the Boy Scouts and the Cape and Islands Council of the Boy Scouts. "The lawsuit regards ownership and use of 100 acres of open land near Rugged Road on Nantucket. The Civic League was allowed to intervene in the suit so that it could assert its claim that the property should be returned to it, if the property ceases to be used by the Boy Scouts as a campground. Founded in 1903, the Civic League is an islandwide, nonprofit community organization representing more than 20 neighborhood associations. It donated the land in question to the local Boy Scouts, beginning with a grant of 30 acres in 1954, and the rest in the early 1970s, but it retained a right to have the land revert to the Civic League if it ceased to be used for Boy Scout purposes."
  16. Relevant quotes in a recently settled sex abuse lawsuit against a scoutmaster convicted of molesting four boys in his troop. http://www.startribune.com/local/south/258046491.html From the victim's attorney: “This courageous survivor and others like him are hopeful that the Boy Scouts of America have done and will do, a better job warning, informing, and telling the truth about the known hazard in scouting, namely that sexual predators are drawn to scouting,†attorney Jeff Anderson said. From North Star Council “Child abuse is intolerable. We are deeply saddened by this case and work continually to ensure that this never happens within the Scouting program." Today Scouting is one of the safest places for children in our community,†the statement said. “We are constantly strengthening our systems and safeguards to keep it that way.†Lest we forget.
  17. I don't know why the troop was unable to recruit new scouts, be they Cubs or not. But if you have to close down a troop, I think it is great that the scouts fly out as Eagles.
  18. Four members of Boy Scout Troop 438 of Coshocton,OH earned the Eagle rank. "After the ceremony, Brendan Dickson, Drew Everhart, Michael Foster and Corey Johnson folded the troop flag one last time and retired it along with the troop to a representative of the Muskingum Valley Boy Scout Council." http://www.coshoctontribune.com/article/20140504/NEWS01/305040014/Scouts-earn-top-rank-troop-dissolves Scout salute and farewell to Troop 438
  19. Maybe a review of Youth Protection, particularly the 3 R's would help. There is no conflict with the Scout Oath and Law in insuring safety for a scout activity, in fact, just the opposite. http://www.scouting.org/filestore/ypt/pdf/46-015.pdf ... "trust your gut..if the situation feels uncomfortable,..." convicted, sexual predator at a scout activity, my gut says he is stalking. I am entrusted with the safety of my scouts and I hope to remain worthy of that trust. From what I read in this post, this incident should be included and discussed in YP training. There is much that is uncomfortable about this story. That's my $0.02,
  20. does any one even know the circumstances of his conviction? It could be a he said she said thing......and It could be 40 years old... 1998 - 4 counts of sexual battery on a child, sentenced to 9 years, the maximum sentence. http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1998-10-16/news/9810160192_1_boy-scouts-boy-s-family-sexual-battery http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1999-05-07/news/9905070308_1_troop-lewd-assault-molested
  21. Sorry Stosh, if I know someone is a registered sex offender and it is a youth event - scouts, school, sports, ... I would remove that person. I'm not waiting for council to write him a letter.
  22. Scout troop advertises lobster fest, clam bake, silent auction fundraiser at local church. Public invited. Scouts are working the event. Sixty year old, former scoutmaster James Dundas, a registered sexual predator (served 9 years in prison) attends with wife. Wife works at the Council Boy Scout store. Parents upset, but apparently he was not told to leave and certainly not forcibly removed without regard to his personal safety. According to police, no laws were broken as James Dundas is not on probation. This is totally unbelievable to me. If I recognized a sexual predator around kids/scouts, that person would be gone! http://www.cbs12.com/news/top-storie...id_15503.shtml
  23. When Do-it-right is replaced by Do-it-quick, the eventual result is Why-bother. My $0.02
  24. I have no problem with a scout(s) decision to leave a scout activity that turns non-scout. Rock band? Sounds like something the Summit would do, not a local Council camporee. My $0.02
