“Everything in camp is now powered by solar,†said Robert Nakagawa, executive director for the Maui chapter of the organization in a press release announcement. “The camp went solar to not only save money and be environmentally friendly, but, to also be a model for our sustainability merit badge and other programs we have.†The annual savings will help Maui County Council to maintain a professional staff person on the island when its capacity building grant expires. Camp Maluhia has 16 cabins that can sleep 230 people. While it is a Boy Scout property, the camp is used more by the general public as a community resource, than by the scouts. It is occupied 60% annually and 95% of weekends throughout the year with peak season running from May to July. http://mauinow.com/2015/03/18/camp-maluhia-goes-solar-425k-savings-expected-over-20-years/ Wonder if I could get the PLC to schedule a camping trip there? Meanwhile, waiting for the warm sunshine here.

Pennsylvania's New Comprehensive Background Checks
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
Thanks for the update. Just when I thought I understood the concept, I read about Reading.PA town government no longer asking about criminal convictions on employment applications. http://readingeagle.com/news/article...iminal-history Maybe some early April Fool's joke? No, according to the article Banning the box that asks about an applicant's criminal history is part of a national fair-chance hiring initiative to delay disclosure until later in the process, so applicants can be judged on their skills and abilities, not the stigma of past incarceration. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia, as well as nearly 100 cities and counties, have adopted fair-chance hiring policies since 2005. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Lancaster and Allegheny County have done so in the commonwealth. Removing questions about criminal convictions does not prevent employers, in this case the city, from asking or conducting background checks. Huh, so a person with a criminal child abuse background could legally not state his past and apply for a job working with kids and hope the background check is not done or botched ? Did I get that right? -
My understanding post 2002, if a public school no longer gives "open forum" access (excuse could be janitor and insurance costs) to outside groups then a public school can reject a BSA-affiliated group from using their school as there is no discrimination, all groups are excluded. If a public school allows "open forum" access, it may charge the same fee to all outside groups but is in no way required to be a BSA CO. And now the kicker, the public school maintains control over its educational program and has full control over which outsiders it invites, if any, to fulfill that program, e.g., 4-H for environmentally green studies, police for drug education; veterans for citizenship. This is not considered "open forum" and the school could selectively or totally reject BSA-affiliated groups from contributing to their program. http://www2.ed.gov/policy/rights/guid/ocr/boyscouts.html The Dear Colleague Letter at that link may have been helpful back in the day. Stolen Troop gear is recovered
RememberSchiff replied to SSScout's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Glad the scouts got some gear back, but I saw no mention of arrests as a result of the initial search warrant. Like Troop 2000, it is also common around here that a troop's home (where they store their gear) is outside in a trailer. Not desirable, but CO's often can offer no storage and neither register or insure; details left to Scoutmaster or Troop Committee. Easy to steal and in summer bakes like an oven. No mention of insurance coverage of stolen gear either. -
My den meetings were at my house after school 4-4:45pm, weekly. Our school district denied my request to hold scout meetings after school at the school which are where the boys are. My esteemed colleague in 4-H had no problem getting permission. She often met more than one day a week at school. Her attendance bloomed, I was lucky to draw 6 Cubs.

We are hardly in their league in terms of their greater numbers, access, and outreach. IMO 4-H and the Y are their competitors. As you saw they are inclusive and as such they usually have easy access to public schools for their after school programs. After-school programs in the school is a BIG win for kids, parents, and Boy & Girls membership. They also have their own numerous community facilities like Y's but usually smaller. I have heard their program costs for kids are usually less than the Y, but the Y services the whole family better. I don't know if they own any camps though they do run summer outdoor programs. They are also strong with community service, STEM programs, swimming, sports program...to paraphrase their "What we do:.. Education; Career Programs Character; Leadership Program Health; Life Skills Arts Program Sports, Fitness, and Recreation Special Programs (related to youth and community needs) Our membership numbers continue to decline while their numbers are increasing.

Need reccomendation for a cot
RememberSchiff replied to slapper's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
Byer cots are the best. I use them for guests of all sizes. https://www.byerofmaine.com/products...furniture.html You can buy direct or through retailers such as Cabelas and Vermont Army Navy who occasionally have them on sale. https://shop.vtarmynavy.com/byer--folding-cots-c41.aspx Hope this helps. P.S. Ugh, sadly most if not all of their cots are now made offshore. Mine were Maine made. Recent reviews on Amazon are mostly positive. -

Arsenal AK fundraiser for Las Vegas Council
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Open Discussion - Program
[video=youtube;bL5804AmxS4]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL5804AmxS4&list=UUs7Mb9yjx4qyA06Ve_MdCIg# t=28 Yes, it is good to be concerned about ammo availability whether due to consumer hoarding, government restriction (either ammo or bullet material), or plant consolidation. The British restricted and seized gunpowder, so our colonists bought from the French. Similarly for this Russian designed rifle (irony), its 7.62x39 ammo is commonly available worldwide and many reload. I walked from buying an excellent Czech mauser which still had the lion crest because 8mm ammo was scarce. Oh no second revolution, as we scouters are training the next better leaders now. -
Arsenal AK fundraiser for Las Vegas Council
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I'm tempted as I do not own any AK's. Prices have not come down much, but Arsenal has a good rep and it's for a good cause right? Even get a Scout "absolution" letter to give Mrs. Schiff. -
"Arsenal Inc. proudly introduces the limited edition "Las Vegas" SAM7R Modern Sporting Rifle. Each rifle features a solid-silver, high-relief medallion embedded in the stock. This limited edition rifle celebrates Arsenal’s Las Vegas heritage and its support for the Las Vegas Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts of America has introduced more youth to the sport of shooting than almost any organization. For over 100 years, the Boy Scouts have actively trained young shooters to respect and safely handle firearms. Arsenal recognizes that young people are the key to the future of shooting sports and the protection of our constitutional rights. As such, Arsenal supports organizations, such as the Boy Scouts, that introduce young people into the sport of shooting. In addition to being the title sponsor of the annual Las Vegas Area Council Sporting Clays event, Arsenal will donate $100 from the proceeds of every limited edition rifle sold to the Boy Scouts. The SAM7R features Arsenal's exclusive forged then milled receiver, original Bulgarian hammer forged chrome lined barrel, 14x1mm left-hand muzzle threads, removable muzzle brake, bayonet lug, US made mil-spec polymer stock set with stainless heat shield, cleaning kit compartment, 800 meter adjustable rear sight leaf, side-mounted base rail for a scope mount. seems there are two files with same name but different size and image -
Thanks. IMO this is a humorous story about Cub Scouts learning about their government and their citizen responsibilities. Everyone usually has an opinion. I like their letters, but do Cub Scouts only go as far as expressing any opinion? CP makes a good point about obtaining and discussing the facts so citizens and representatives can have informed and fair opinions. I wonder if the Cubs were aware (I wasn't) that Illinois is the #1 grower of pumpkins? Maybe a follow-up "fact-finding junket" to Libby's canning plant (I bet that is huge), a bakery (a pie slice a la mode!), or a farm (later in growing season)? Food for thought.

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150303/lakeview/these-boy-scouts-really-hate-pumpkin-pie During a visit with students on Monday, Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) spoke with the youngsters about the legislative process. To demonstrate how a bill becomes law, she showed them House Bill 208, which seeks to designate pumpkin pie as the official state pie of Illinois. But when Feigenholtz explained the bill to the third and fourth grade students, she got more responses than she bargained for. ... In letters to the bill's chief sponsor, State Rep. Keith Sommer (R-Morton), the Boy Scouts offered alternatives to pumpkin pie like "bluebarry," "penut butter choclite" and "key lime." Basically, anything but pumpkin. "NO Pumkin pie. I said Nooooooooo pumkin pie. You heard me Noooooooooooooooooo pumkin pie. Sincerely Connor," wrote one impassioned future voter. What next, popcorn as the state snack?

Scout Chief skips meeting on Camp Russell http://www.uticaod.com/article/20150228/News/150229367 Steve McEwan, Boy Scouts of America Revolutionary Trails Council executive, decided not to show up to a Wednesday night Save Camp Russell subcommittee meeting after he learned late Tuesday it was not a troop meeting. I had printed some handout materials for the meeting, McEwan said, explaining he initially thought he was meeting with Ilion Boy Scout Troop 9. At the last (Save Camp Russell) meeting, 80 people were there. My little 8½-by-11 handout would not have done very well. Since the Revolutionary Trails Council voted 17-4 in December to sell Camp Russell and its Cedarlands property, McEwan and other council representatives have been traveling to various troops and compiling fact sheets to explain why they made the decision. To date, though, they have not attended an event hosted by Save Camp Russell, the 3,000-likes-strong Facebook group that started a change.org petition asking the council to keep Camp Russell open. The petition can be viewed online by visiting www.change.org and searching for Camp Russell. ...McEwan declined the invitation, writing: While I am still very willing to attend a meeting of Pack 9 committee or a parents meeting, I am not incline (sic) to participate in a meeting of the Save Camp Russell group. Do not sell Camp Russell & keep it open to Scouting https://www.change.org/p/steven-mcew...en-to-scouting 2,431 supporters with 69 more needed to forward change.org petition

Seek legal advice from a reputable personal injury attorney. Depending on the facts and which court and which state, you may possibly obtain a restraining order. Different states have different names, e.g., a civil harassment order (civil court) or a criminal protection order (criminal). Agree with Stosh, seek expert counseling from experts. My $0.01

There are lies, damn lies, and perhaps mind-boggling/intolerable/get-fired lies depending on the experience of the liar and the perspective of whoever is judging. As you likely know, our secretary of Veteran Affairs Robert McDonald falsely claimed to a homeless veteran that he served in Special Forces. When exposed, the West Point graduate and former US Army Ranger admitted to his mistake and promised to “do better†and further said, “My biggest motivation was to connect with the veteran,†Mr. McDonald told reporters Tuesday, referring to the homeless man. He said he had never before claimed to have been in the Special Forces, and insisted that throughout his life  from Boy Scouts to the present day  “integrity has been one of the foundations of my character.†Some grant forgiveness, some wish him luck "doing better" in his next job. Who should decide? Those from within the Beltway and Proctor&Gamble, or a panel of veterans who were all Boy Scouts, West Point graduates, and served in Special Forces, or veterans of all backgrounds, or...?
