Well if they intentionally tried to kill us, I think our survival chances would dramatically improve.

Family nights seem to work better when the camp controls the herd. Limit families to a specified area - say the parade ground and campfire ring. No running up to a campsite to drop-off stuff or getting a camp tour. My preference would be for scout to sit with their unit at campfire, but somehow the umbilical gets re-attached. Sorry this happened. Safety is job 1 and that includes keeping the sparks away from the gunpowder. My $0.02

Lefeber Northwoods (Wi) Camps (Baird And Neidhoefer) Closing
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Summer Camp
Arrrgh, I should have appended this to an earlier link about these camps. Sorry. http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/26888-two-more-camps-bite-the-dust/ -
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/northwoods-boy-scout-camps-head-into-a-poignant-sunset-b99536313z1-314066621.html http://www.threeharborscamps.org/#!lefebernorthwoods/c1k5m Three Harbors Boy Scout Council of Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties decided to close LeFeber which consists of two scout camps on 1,140 acres in the midst of the Nicolet National Forest. and a Cub Scout camp, the Robert S. Lyle Scout Reservation located about 17 miles away in Elcho. Citing a drop in the number of Scouts visiting the camp, a survey of parents who don't want their boys to travel so far from home and the rustic nature of the place that does not offer a dining hall for troops, the council plans to focus on two mostly Cub Scout camps in southern Wisconsin and close its two Boy Scout camps in the north. (Supposedly Lefeber was still making a profit while Lyle was not -RS) "Some Scout leaders and others have started a campaign with the name Baden-Powell Northwoods Experience to either keep LeFeber and Lyle as council camps or to purchase them to continue running them as other camps. The group is working with a lawyer to help it become a nonprofit and started a Facebook page. "Our group believes the camp is financially viable and self-sustaining as long as there's no mortgage," said Crystal Grayl, a counselor with Boy Scout Troop 580 in West Allis. "Even if the council decides to close it and not keep it a Boy Scout camp anymore we think it can be used by other groups." Dave Loosen, Troop 580 Scout Master, worked for Three Harbors Council for 38 years before retiring four years ago on good terms. He sharply criticized the council's decision to close the two northern camps and said Boy Scout leaders who use the camp were not consulted. "A year ago this was never on the table, it wasn't discussed at any meetings of leaders who use the camp. The first we heard about it was when the email went out," Loosen said. Loosen said the email mentioned that roughly $1 million in improvements are needed to bring the camps up to operational readiness. "When I asked about that, it meant all four of the council's camps, not the two camps up here, which was misleading to say it was only the two northern camps," he said. Katie Clark, director of development for Three Harbors Council, said the deferred maintenance needed for both northern Scout camps and the two southern mostly Cub Scout camps is $940,750 — of that total $310,750 is needed at LeFeber and Lyle. The cost to improve the northern camps to a premier facility, though, is estimated at almost $6.6 million. And with the number of people using LeFeber and Lyle dropping over the last few years, the council's executive board decided it wasn't worth it financially to invest in the camps. "They felt that it would be financially improper to invest in underutilized properties, and that because of the trends, camp upgrades would in no way ensure an increase in the number of camper days ... to financially justify continued operations," Clark said in an email. Less than 50% of troops in the Three Harbors Council have sent their Scouts to LeFeber and Lyle in the last two years. But Loosen said that three years before that, 60% of troops from the council visited the camps. When he asked the head of the council why Scout leaders were not consulted, he was told an outside study was done. "It was an online survey of 300 people, parents and leaders. One of the things it said was that parents of Scouts didn't want their sons to go long distance. I have 38 young men up here this week, their parents want them up here. That was something made by Cub Scout parents, so it was a small portion of people taken out of context," Loosen said. Clark said a task force was formed when the Boy Scout councils in Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties consolidated in 2011 to study use of the camps. Volunteers were invited to join the task force, which decided after two years of study to recommend in January closing LeFeber and Lyle.

Why was she an "adult" at camp? Did she have YP training?

The Venturers are challenging your authority and getting help from their parents. I'd say some training is in order. The Crew leaders (the kids as you call them) should be planning (soap, water, sunscreen) and leading their activities. You should be standing back and advising. Maybe you could bring in someone who has melanoma for a fun talk. Whoever leads, the point has to be made that there are consequences for not following safety rules - sunburn now, maybe melanoma later, ...maybe removal from your crew. My $0.02,

Scout Saves His Dad From Electrocution

Good points. He took the risk to himself, perhaps just in time to save his Dad. -
Yes, handled as a Youth Protection matter.

http://www.wdam.com/story/29523046/missouri-boy-called-a-hero-for-saving-dad-from-electrocution FREDERICKTOWN, MO: A 13-year-old boy is being called a hero for saving his dad's life. It happened as the father and son, from Fredericktown, were fixing a broken air conditioning unit. Trevan West has been a boy scout for three years. He said its taught him what to do during any type of emergency. A skill he put to good use in real life. "I ran up to it and I grabbed it and it shocked me, so I tackled him to get it off of him,†described West. During a routine task, West's dad touched the wrong piece of an air conditioning unit at the wrong time. It sent 240 volts of electricity through his hand, up his arm and out of his back. (link above has burn photos) "When I got him off of it, his lips started turning blue and he was biting on his tongue,†he said. West said he tackled his dad in order to get him to release the the piece of metal. Right as he was about to perform CPR, "He just woke up,†he said.

Must have been a young council exec. In similar circumstances, I usually get a bobblehead nod and "I hear ya"...same result though. As for your second paragraph, I hear ya. My $0.02 -
Pennsylvania's New Comprehensive Background Checks

Yes and they were not happy. Another officer arrived and there were some radio discussions regarding a tow truck. They decided to give me a "break" regarding the insurance card but not on the speeding. Catch and release? -
Pennsylvania's New Comprehensive Background Checks

One interpretation might be "if you,as a volunteer working with kids, are good in your own state, you are good in PA up to 30 days", but how would PA law enforcement know? Schiff got pulled over for speeding in PA. In MA, "License and registration, please". In PA, "License, registration, and proof of insurance card". Officer, we don't have an insurance card issued in MA, there's an insurance stamp on the registration. "Well you have a problem. You are not in MA." -
Pennsylvania's New Comprehensive Background Checks
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
Seems correct. On a PA gov site http://keepkidssafe.pa.gov/cs/groups/webcontent/documents/document/C_135249.pdf What is the provisional clearance requirement for volunteers? Individuals who reside in another state or country may serve as a volunteer for no more than 30 days as long as they provide clearances from their state or country of residence. If the individual will be volunteering for more than 30 days, they must obtain clearances as outlined above under “Which clearances are needed.†This is confusing as most of us do not carry a card that explicitly states one has passed a state and FBI background check. In Mass, every time you need a background check for school, little league, scouts,.., it is a do-over, pass/fail test. If a out-of-state driver's license would suffice, why not a PA driver's license too? I would think my firearms license would suffice but imagine the headline spin on that. Maybe if a volunteer worked for a school district, police, fire, their employer id would suffice. Pretty vague. -

Pennsylvania's New Comprehensive Background Checks
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
Update Jun 10, 2015 Governor Wolf waives fees for volunteers' background check. http://www.pennlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2015/06/gov_tom_wolf_waives_fee_for_vo.html Wolf announced today that $20 in fees for a child abuse clearance and state police criminal background check required by the Child Protective Services Law will be waived for volunteers who work with children. He also announced that the state Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania State Police will be reducing the cost of both the child abuse and criminal history record checks from $10 to $8 for all other applicants. These changes, which grew out of conversations with legislators, will take effect on July 25. So volunteers are still required to get these PA background checks and will only pay for FBI check. Council employees will still have to pay but the cost has been reduced. It is unclear about out-of-state volunteers, but we canceled a Gettysburg trip this summer as no one in Harrisburg could answer our questions. http://newbirthoffreedom.org/2015/06/10/gov-wolf-announces-fee-waivers-for-volunteers-seeking-background-checks/ -

Maybe hacked, maybe whacked ...too bad Sarbanes-Oxley would be a stretch. http://apps.americanbar.org/legalservices/probono/nonprofits_sarbanes_oxley.html Although most provisions of Sarbanes-Oxley apply only to public companies, at least two criminal provisions apply to nonprofit organizations: provisions prohibiting retaliation against whistleblowers and prohibiting the destruction, alteration or concealment of certain documents or the impediment of investigations. ... Section 1102 of the Act makes it a crime to "corruptly" alter, destroy, mutilate, or conceal a record, document or other object, or attempt to do so, with the intent to impair the object's integrity or availability for use in an official proceeding. The Act does not define the term "corruptly." Violators may be fined and/or imprisoned for up to 20 years. (emphasis added)

Digital Badging - No More Sewing?

http://www.clomedia.com/articles/6346-be-a-boy-scout-prepare-for-digital-badging ...BSA’s merit program is adapting to digital-native members by adopting digital badging, a method to earn and display learning achievements such as certificates and completed classwork. “Every experience could really become a credential through the use of things like badging,†Swanson said. “They’re great tools to track both formal and informal learning, whether an employee is taking a class or simply turning to the Internet for an answer.†The Boy Scouts of America have a similar approach to give its members credit for their learning, from requiring them to spend days in the wilderness to offering 136 courses via smartphone. Every experience counts, said Diana Childress, vice president and managing director for strategic initiatives at Pearson North America. She teamed up with BSA’s Wellen to create the badging program. Childress met with scout troops before their 12-day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, the largest Boy Scout High Adventure Base. She said the participants hit the trails with phones in hand, living out the organization’s motto of using any tool they have, be it a piece of rope or piece of technology. “This is about the fundamental earning of a credentialed badge for each subject and accumulating them in advancement,†Childress said. “It’s an enhancement of the learning experience.†I remember when we tracked animals and each other more than advancement, did scout things without getting credit or expecting it ... That last sentence just bugs me.

Said it before, get rid of "Scout". Didn't like it as a non-rank, and like it less as a rank. AOL scouts are bored by the review. Less talk, less chair-time, more hands-on and on the go - FUN. Move knots and knife safety to Tenderfoot. Why not explicitly state "After successfully completing all requirements for this rank, including a Scoutmaster's Conference, request and complete your Board of Review. First Class First Aid. Should include what to do at scene of car accident. My $0.02

I think National (CSE Ben Love) banned the confederate/flag and emblems back in the 90's. The only flag to display was the US flag.

Been wondering if citizens, even us Yankees, might rebrand the Confederate Flag for new battle(s) against government?

We dropped newspaper/magazine recycling long ago. Lower collection volumes, lower recycle payouts. We have thought of sponsoring an "electronics" collection but other groups jumped in. Word is they barely broken even. Some roadside dumping occurred too, as some did not want to pay to drop off their 30yr old cathode-tube TV., etc We still do bottle and can recycling but revenue has been down. Some blame the economy as folks do their own returns. Recycling revenue is shrinking while the troop activities expenses are growing.
