Some questions Did this scout receive a partial blue card from this MBC? How many other scouts from your troop were in this particular class? Was his son one of them? What goes around, comes around applies to more than just toilet paper.

So we have an unnecessary Scout rank badge and a unearned World Crest badge. IMO, it would better to move the Scout joining requirements to World Crest and have our scouts earn it instead of just buy it. Move the other Scout requirements back to Tenderfoot where they belong. Thrifty common sense. My $0.02

As I understand British scouts earn their World Crest (Membership) patch. Here it is just a World Scouting fundraiser badge, Americans buy it for a couple of dollars. National sends $.10 to WASM. Here: $2 and it's yours. Over there: https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/4341/membership-award/?cat=7,64,177&moduleID=10 How to earn your badge Know about the Scout Troop: Get to know other members and Leaders in the Patrol and Troop. Find out about the ceremonies and traditions in the Troop. Find out about the activities that the Patrol and Troop does. Know about joining your Troop: Learn and understand the Scout Promise and Law and the rules of the Troop. Learn and understand the Scout Motto, sign, salute and handshake. Show you know the general history and family of Scouts and Scouting around the world. Learn what to do at Investiture. Become a Scout by making the Promise. Got me thinking, maybe the BSA should do the same here and drop the Scout rank badge.

As part of every scout's uniform, the necker goes back to the beginning of Scouting, all generations. The World Crest is relatively new for the BSA. For a long time in the US, a scout/scouter could not wear the World Crest unless he had completed "international" scouting requirements such as attending a World Jamboree. That is why you rarely see the World Crest on old BSA uniforms, see neckers though. I think that policy changed in the 1990's when it became available to all US scouts to add to their uniforms. As I recall, it was slow to catch on. Now I see more scout uniforms with World Crests than with neckers. http://www.scoutinsignia.com/wcrest.htm My $0.02

French Jamboree Evacuated Due To Severe Storm
RememberSchiff replied to Rick_in_CA's topic in Scouting Around the World
Looking at photos of all the attractive female scouts over there Looking at the photos of the damaged tents and sad scouts, I think as a great way to increase recruitment and signup of US boys as an example of World Brotherhood, the BSA should offer a "blitzsturm" discount for those scouts to attend the Summit Jambo. French Jamboree Evacuated Due To Severe Storm

That was amazing emergency preparedness. Those links said they were evacuated (walked?) to a nearby indoor? arena, apparently quickly as most were barefoot. -
Nonscout Related Kickstarter Request
RememberSchiff replied to jpstodwftexas's topic in Issues & Politics
Well now you have 2 backers. Reminds me of the rainforest at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. We could use more exotic green spaces. Good luck with your project. RS -
From their standpoint, giving out their e-mail address and creating an account is a "big deal" to only take a likely one time 30+ minute online course. Reminds them of financial planners, etc, who offer a "free" course but require you to register and provide all that marketing information for future spam. Too bad, we needed their help.

http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2015/07/17/dan-beard-covington-boy-scouts-cincinnati/30307907/ A brief article, but there is a slide show at the bottom that is interesting. Home is outside Cincinnati, OH in Covington, KY (hope I got that right) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Carter_Beard_Boyhood_Home I did not know that Mark Twain selected Dan Beard to illustrate A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, certainly the obvious has stared me in the face many times. Some may know Dan Beard as a celebrated 19th century illustrator. Others know that him as a founder of the Boy Scouts of America. And still others realize his appreciation for the outdoors began here, in Cincinnati where he was born, and in Covington where he spent his boyhood years. Dan Beard - Legend

I thought YP training could be taken online WITHOUT creating a MyScouting account and logging in. I thought this was done to make it easier for reluctant non-registered adults to get the training. Just enter name, listen to course, take test and print out ticket. Some parents came back to me tonight, still non-YP, telling me that I was all wet. Seems I am?

Well consider today, I received an email from my son's school that he has summer vacation homework and I and Mrs. Schiff are responsible that he gets it done. Neither happened or would have happened to my parents. I am tempted to channel my Dad and tell them in blunt language to do their job. Back then there were consequences - spankings and worse. Yeah I got the belt. The phrase "Just wait 'til your father comes home" was dreaded. No social promotions back then. My parents did not have to worry about censoring movies, mail, tv, or books as the bad stuff was just not accessible. There were only 3 or 4 tv channels. Oh there was a close call in 9th grade when Peyton Place was briefly added to reading list. I think that English dept head eventually found a job at Woolworth's. My father told me, legally his kids were "chattel" and he would do as he wanted, in other words, the Village will mind its own business and mostly did.

Good "Part 1". I look forward to reading Part 2. It is harder being a parent today and the fault is not entirely with parents.

Pickup (During Camp) Authorization Form
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Summer Camp
Oops, I meant the movie Brazil. -
Personally I thought this was now covered in the 4+ pages BSA health form required for camp. Anyway a parent, who had signed his son's health forms but not a separate camp Pick-up Authorization Form (sounds like movie Brazil, Brazil), needed to pick-up his son early. What an unnecessary headache all around!

Yawn, how successful was the NAACP in preventing the Martin Luthor King statue from being done offshore by sculptor Lei Yixin of Changsha, China using Chinese granite. Let the NAACP erase that piece of crap first, before they give any thought to even proposing erasing a real work of beauty (best viewed at night).

http://onlineathens.com/breaking-news/2015-07-15/athens-clarke-surplus-sailboats-go-local-sea-scouts Athens, Georgia Eight sailboats — six 8-foot craft, a 10-foot model and a 14-foot boat, will go to Sea Scout Ship 444, sponsored by the Winterville Civitan Club. Sea Scouts are a co-ed program of the Boy Scouts of America, and while Ship 444 already has boats at its disposal, the 8-foot Optimist sailboats work well as training vessels, according to Michele Matthews, an adult leader of Ship 444. And, she said, the smaller craft work well on smaller bodies of water such as Lake Chapman at Athens-Clarke County’s Sandy Creek Park, where they’re based, and where both morning and evening breezes provide opportunities for sailing. The boats go to the Sea Scout group through the Winterville Civitan Club, which will pay the county a token $10 for the vessels, Denson said. As part of the deal, Sea Scout Ship 444, along with the associated Boy Scout Troop 44 and Venture Crew 44, which will also have access to the boats, must agree to make the sailboats available to other organizations that may want to borrow them, Matthews said. Among the details that remain to be worked out in the deal is how much the Scout groups can charge the other organizations for using the sailboats, Matthews added, explaining the groups would like to charge a small fee to cover ongoing maintenance and upkeep costs for the vessels. My son trained on a small Optimist when he was younger than 11. Sounds like a deal and the beginning of a boat rental business. Our troop has had to turn down deals or freebies, e.g. old canoes, simply because we did not have the storage capacity.

Well if they intentionally tried to kill us, I think our survival chances would dramatically improve.

Family nights seem to work better when the camp controls the herd. Limit families to a specified area - say the parade ground and campfire ring. No running up to a campsite to drop-off stuff or getting a camp tour. My preference would be for scout to sit with their unit at campfire, but somehow the umbilical gets re-attached. Sorry this happened. Safety is job 1 and that includes keeping the sparks away from the gunpowder. My $0.02

Lefeber Northwoods (Wi) Camps (Baird And Neidhoefer) Closing
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Summer Camp
Arrrgh, I should have appended this to an earlier link about these camps. Sorry. http://scouter.com/index.php/topic/26888-two-more-camps-bite-the-dust/ -
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/northwoods-boy-scout-camps-head-into-a-poignant-sunset-b99536313z1-314066621.html http://www.threeharborscamps.org/#!lefebernorthwoods/c1k5m Three Harbors Boy Scout Council of Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties decided to close LeFeber which consists of two scout camps on 1,140 acres in the midst of the Nicolet National Forest. and a Cub Scout camp, the Robert S. Lyle Scout Reservation located about 17 miles away in Elcho. Citing a drop in the number of Scouts visiting the camp, a survey of parents who don't want their boys to travel so far from home and the rustic nature of the place that does not offer a dining hall for troops, the council plans to focus on two mostly Cub Scout camps in southern Wisconsin and close its two Boy Scout camps in the north. (Supposedly Lefeber was still making a profit while Lyle was not -RS) "Some Scout leaders and others have started a campaign with the name Baden-Powell Northwoods Experience to either keep LeFeber and Lyle as council camps or to purchase them to continue running them as other camps. The group is working with a lawyer to help it become a nonprofit and started a Facebook page. "Our group believes the camp is financially viable and self-sustaining as long as there's no mortgage," said Crystal Grayl, a counselor with Boy Scout Troop 580 in West Allis. "Even if the council decides to close it and not keep it a Boy Scout camp anymore we think it can be used by other groups." Dave Loosen, Troop 580 Scout Master, worked for Three Harbors Council for 38 years before retiring four years ago on good terms. He sharply criticized the council's decision to close the two northern camps and said Boy Scout leaders who use the camp were not consulted. "A year ago this was never on the table, it wasn't discussed at any meetings of leaders who use the camp. The first we heard about it was when the email went out," Loosen said. Loosen said the email mentioned that roughly $1 million in improvements are needed to bring the camps up to operational readiness. "When I asked about that, it meant all four of the council's camps, not the two camps up here, which was misleading to say it was only the two northern camps," he said. Katie Clark, director of development for Three Harbors Council, said the deferred maintenance needed for both northern Scout camps and the two southern mostly Cub Scout camps is $940,750 — of that total $310,750 is needed at LeFeber and Lyle. The cost to improve the northern camps to a premier facility, though, is estimated at almost $6.6 million. And with the number of people using LeFeber and Lyle dropping over the last few years, the council's executive board decided it wasn't worth it financially to invest in the camps. "They felt that it would be financially improper to invest in underutilized properties, and that because of the trends, camp upgrades would in no way ensure an increase in the number of camper days ... to financially justify continued operations," Clark said in an email. Less than 50% of troops in the Three Harbors Council have sent their Scouts to LeFeber and Lyle in the last two years. But Loosen said that three years before that, 60% of troops from the council visited the camps. When he asked the head of the council why Scout leaders were not consulted, he was told an outside study was done. "It was an online survey of 300 people, parents and leaders. One of the things it said was that parents of Scouts didn't want their sons to go long distance. I have 38 young men up here this week, their parents want them up here. That was something made by Cub Scout parents, so it was a small portion of people taken out of context," Loosen said. Clark said a task force was formed when the Boy Scout councils in Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties consolidated in 2011 to study use of the camps. Volunteers were invited to join the task force, which decided after two years of study to recommend in January closing LeFeber and Lyle.

Why was she an "adult" at camp? Did she have YP training?
-
The Venturers are challenging your authority and getting help from their parents. I'd say some training is in order. The Crew leaders (the kids as you call them) should be planning (soap, water, sunscreen) and leading their activities. You should be standing back and advising. Maybe you could bring in someone who has melanoma for a fun talk. Whoever leads, the point has to be made that there are consequences for not following safety rules - sunburn now, maybe melanoma later, ...maybe removal from your crew. My $0.02,
