  1. Wouldn't that be something, if the things we didn't have (laptops, cellphones, dvd players) in the 60's when we crossed borders we again don't have 50 years later.
  2. The US is banning laptops and other electronic devices on inbound flights from some countries. The UK has now joined the ban and Canada is considering it. The concern is that these devices could be weaponized.
  3. Most boys leave scouting before that and even more never reach Eagle, so I would worry about that if and when it happens. As SM, I would be doing my best to do right by the scout and keep him interested in scouting especially after after two sports programs. Hopefully, he will earn his First Class before some "adults" change the requirements again. My $0.02
  4. Bring it up in his BOR and move on with the Scouting program. Summer camp will be here before you know it.
  5. Maybe add a requirement to Citizenship in Nation or World regarding border crossing procedures, both US and foreign. IMHO, add requirement to Nation right after requirement #4 4. Discuss each of the following documents with your counselor. Tell your counselor how you feel life in the United States might be different without each one. a. Declaration of Independence b. Preamble to the Constitution c. The Constitution d. Bill of Rights e. Amendments to the Constitution What happens when old Schiff returns to US wearing his old Argus 35mm camera, does BCP seize my undeveloped film? <--- imagine a camera that didn't need a battery With more people storing info remotely in a "cloud" and clearing history, I wonder about the law enforcement value as well as the constitutionality of these measures. My $0.02
  6. I was more a Question Authority than Follow Akela scout. IMO, Intelligent and Aware should be there.
  7. Not at the US border or within x miles of it, but everywhere else in US, yes I think.
  8. Yes, Girl Guides is not part of Scouts Canada. Scouts Canada is coed.
  9. The 36th Annual Hands Across the Border will be held in Canada at Camp Stone, near Kimberley British Columbia, September 29-Oct 1, 2017. This is the first time in several years the event will be held in Canada. This is very exciting news and I believe those units going will have a great experience. ... the camp’s location is a 5-hour drive from Missoula, not taking into account border crossing time. How much time would/should border crossing time take? 2hours, 4hours, more? With cellphones and social media accounts being examined without a warrant at US border, what what be your electronics policy for trip? In link, I was not aware of passport cards ($30 versus $100 passport) for US-Canada-Mexico land border crossing. http://www.montanabsa.org/2017-hands-across-border/
  10. IMO, the ideal CO was one which had a gym for our meeting place. As a scout, my troop met in a gym which was part of a Presbyterian school. Those were the days my friend.
  11. Could have been just my Council back then. Our local Republican Club tried to charter a Boy Scout troop and was turned down for that reason. Some thought it was politics as it was '68 and candidate Nixon was coming to town. Catholic churches chartered through their parochial school where their units also met, not the Knights of Columbus. Back then, there were plenty of schools and churches, where the boys were, seeking charters. Times change.
  12. Indignant or responsible or moral or smart choice? Some parents have no alcohol in their homes. I don't. Back in the day (here he goes), my old Council would not charter organizations which had/served alcohol on their premises. There was no shortage of public schools and churches willing to sponsor BSA units. I think the BSA will adopt the Scouting Association stand on alcohol (link below) and as soon as we hear beer being served at Summit for whatever the activity, scouting or not, there will be beer at scout camps. https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/1862/alcohol-and-scouting?cat=419,299,303
  13. It is server side js, please inform Terry homepage references window.IPBoard as Col. Flag mentioned. view-source:http://scouter.com/public/style_images/bulletin/ips.mcr.js
  14. On Firefox, I use the default appearance and have seen this popup.
  15. http://www.wallaceburgcourierpress.com/2017/03/15/lambton-event-not-expected-to-end-with-girl-guide-canada-policy-change A decision by Girl Guides Canada to stop granting approval for trips to the U.S. isn't expected to end a five-decade-old annual cross-border event in Sarnia-Lambton. This year's 50th anniversary of the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts International River Crossing is set for Sept. 30 in Sombra, on the Canadian side of the river, and a park on the Michigan side. Girl Guide groups, from Sparks to Rangers, hold special events during the day of the event, and participants are able to cross on the Sombra Ferry to take part in activities on both sides of the border. Madeline Pauschenwein, a community guider with the Girl Guides in Lambton, said a great deal of paperwork had already been required for leaders wishing to take groups across the border during the event, but the organization was able to come up with an alternative in recent years. “Anybody that wants to cross, has to bring a parent with them to go, so they can still cross,†Pauschenwein said. “It's on the parents’ shoulders then, and not Girl Guides of Canada.†May common sense prevail.
  16. Still collecting data. I have not seen the problem with Chrome. I have with Firefox sporadically, but only if I am not logged in. As stated, do not enter any info in this pop-up, close it, Log in as usual.
  17. http://itroadmap.scouting.org/ according to their roadmap, Councils can expect Ability to update the most recent approved merit badge counselor list bsalegal.org appears gone.
  18. I agree some positive, personal tourist stories regarding US border entry would be helpful, but then some positive stories about TSA in mid-America are rare too.
  19. Having read the Canadian volunteers being turned back from traveling to aid a NJ church, should the Jambo organizers proactively inform US Customs and Border Protection which countries are sending scouts and their names? Let's try to keep this discussion scout related.

  21. http://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/spending-money-at-home-contributing-to-the-trump-slump-in-the-u-s-1.3324885 “The U.S. travel industry already has a name for this. It's called the “Trump Slump,†says David Macdonald. Macdonald is a senior economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, located in Ottawa. He says the Girl Guides of Canada is just the latest group to postpone travel to the U.S. and believes the numbers are telling with respect to the economic impact of those decisions. “It does appear that travel into the United States is down about 7%,†he says, “and searches for flights into the U.S. is down 17%. So more of that tourist money that American communities might get, might well be spent in Canada.†About 800 Canadian Girl Guides travel into the U.S. each year. The Guides say their decision to postpone that travel is intended to ensure safety and equality for all the girls. “It's not a political statement,†says Sarah Kiriliuk with Girl Guides of Canada, “it's a reaction to the realities of what's happening in the world right now.†Scouts Canada (their BSA) has no plans to postpone trips to the U.S. In a statement, John Petitti with Scouts Canada said, “As with any Scouting activity involving travel, we encourage our members to plan their trips carefully, to have all required paperwork in order and to always have alternate plans in case of unexpected developments.†Both the Ottawa Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board say no trips have been cancelled so far but added that they will continue to monitor the situation, as will many of the shoppers we spoke with today.
  22. online MB class...so virtual adult association?
  23. Like I said, be prepared. At least four adults in group, so two adults available to stay back. Hopefully, any problem will appear at first departure point (home airport) where parents are on just other side of the gate.
  24. Why not send out a notice to units and let the scouts/parents in that unit decide, rather than telling all units they cannot go to Disneyworld because there may or may not be a problem. I expect on any flight, there will be a problem at the airport. If one or two are delayed (I really mean detained) by TSA, do we all stay behind, scrap the trip, and eat the expenses. No. I would expect a border crossing to be more problematic. Be prepared, not scared. Another $0.02.
