The Ashley Book of Knots, first published in 1944 contains nearly 7,000 illustrations of over 3,000 knots. (The book is now entering public dpomain - RS) Ashley spent time aboard whaling ships, including the Sunbeam for a piece commissioned by Harper’s Monthly Magazine. In addition to writing about the industry and sketching its knots, he photographed the vessels and crews, creating a rare archive of the early 20th-century New England maritime trade. For his book research, he tried to get as broad an overview of knots as possible, visiting the circus, fishermen, bakers, tree surgeons, and anyone else who employed this technology in their work. Ashley examined old seamen’s dictionaries, and became an expert knot tyer himself. As he wrote in The Ashley Book of Knots: … I have continued to collect knots wherever I could find them, and as unfamiliar sailors’ knots became increasingly difficult to find I was attracted by the knots of other occupations. I hobnobbed with butchers and steeple jacks, cobblers and truck drivers, electric linesmen, Boy Scouts, and with elderly ladies who knit. Mr. Ringling himself … took me about his circus and was pleased to be able to dazzle me with a score of knots with which I was quite unfamiliar. Thou Shalt Knot: Clifford W. Ashley exhibit continues at the New Bedford Whaling Museum (18 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford, Massachusetts) through June 2018. (Hmmm, a trip idea to pass along to PLC - RS) Clifford W. Ashley was an artist who studied under the influential illustrator Howard Pyle, painted expressive maritime scenes, and published histories of whaling related to the waterfront of his hometown, New Bedford, Massachusetts. Yet he’s best remembered for a wildly popular book on knots. Source: https://hyperallergic.com/412646/thou-shalt-knot-new-bedford-whaling-museum/

You are NOT now nor have you ever been a moderator on this forum under any of the various display names you have created and used: jblake, Stosh, Heretic, Lurkin. A trustworthy scouter would not claim to be what he is not. Scout Law. A person with common sense would not claim to be what he is not. Pending moderator review. -

Well if you could only participate in one forum, I would say scouter.com is not a bad choice. -
Display Names, Scout Law, and Common Sense
RememberSchiff replied to Stosh's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Scouter.com members choose their own display names, assuming that name is not already in use in this community. What names you had on other forums are irrelevant. Members can also change their display name. "You are permitted to make 3 changes in a 30-day period." Just a matter of going into Settings and changing your Display Name. As I recall, one member changed his scouter.com member name to Lurkin (sp?) earlier this year for awhile. I don't know why. Changing names causes confusion in the community. Hope this helps. -
New Volunteers vs the Old Guard
RememberSchiff replied to WisconsinMomma's topic in Issues & Politics
IMO, at our local council summer camp, the tables flip. The young staff and New Volunteers rule and the Old Guard's sphere of influence is limited to his troop's campsite.- 67 replies

Well in this case, the scout's scoutmaster wrote a letter for the discipline hearing. Milton, Mass Dec 13, 2017 A 13yr old Boy Scout who mistakenly forgot his folding knife (2-inch blade) in his backpack and then showed it to friends while on his way home from school was suspended for eight days following a disciplinary hearing Tuesday with the school’s principal and vice principal. “I confirmed with the school yesterday they intend to put this on his permanent record and use verbiage that uses the word ‘weapon,’ ” said. his mother “He is a male of color. ... My son doesn’t miss days from school. We can count the number of days since he’s missed since kindergarten on two hands.” .... The boy’s troop leader, Jim Solomon, wrote a letter on behalf of the teen presented at the disciplinary hearing. He said the suspended teen is a dedicated Scout who wants to one day become an Eagle Scout. Folding knives are a necessary utility, and the boy had the knife in his backpack because he intended to go camping in Manchester, N.H., (Camp Carpenter - RS ) but then didn’t because he was sick, Solomon said. He added that Boy Scouts are well trained to use the knives safely. Solomon said the school is being too strict. He should have “gotten a warning,” Solomon added. “They should have said, ‘Don’t do it again’ because he didn’t do anything wrong. ... He was excited about being a Scout and wanted to show others his knife.” More details and photo of knife at source link: http://www.bostonherald.com/news/local_coverage/2017/12/school_punishes_boy_scout_over_2_inch_blade -

Scouts are like squirrels, they forget where they bury things. Schenectady, NY "A Statue of Liberty replica that was erected in Liberty Park by the Boys Scouts in 1950 is looking for a new home. Schenectady was one of six locations in New York that had enough interested and enthusiastic Boys Scouts to order a statue. Due to construction in that area of State Street, across from the former YMCA, the replica has been put in the city garage on Foster Avenue for safekeeping. But Mayor Gary R. McCarthy expects it to have a new home soon.... The replica is about 8 1/2 feet tall without its base. It is made of sheet copper and weighs about 290 pounds. The cost of the replica was about $350 at the time it was installed. When construction workers moved the statue out of Liberty Park in August, they unearthed a time capsule that was buried by the Boy Scouts when the replica was installed. "It was supposed to be opened in 2000, but it never was," said Joe Berlant, the retired deputy director for development for the city of Schenectady and a former Boy Scout leader. "The Schenectady Council of the Boy Scouts dissolved around 1991 or '92, so the folks immediately involved in the statue and the time capsule had lost track of this." There were around 200 Boy Scout groups around the country that participated in a program in 1950 to erect Statue of Liberty replicas in their communities. The Schenectady group also put the time capsule — a small box made of sheet copper — under the base of the replica. When officials opened it, the only item inside was ..." more details and photos at source link https://dailygazette.com/article/2017/12/13/statue-of-liberty-replica-will-find-a-new-home

Ireland seeks Eagle now before she ages out
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
@an_old_DCAccording to NPR (link below) Sydney Ireland has been involved with scouting since she was four years old, when she began tagging along with her older brother to Cub Scout meetings. Since then, she has been an unofficial, but enthusiastic, member of Troop 414 in Manhattan. " Over the years, Sydney's activities with the troop have included camping trips, hiking, archery, ice climbing and, yes, knot-tying. As a city kid, she has learned to cherish a connection to the outdoors and she credits the Boy Scouts for helping to foster it. But although the local troop has welcomed Sydney's participation, she is not able to officially earn merit badges and advance in rank along with the boys around her, because she is a girl. ... Sydney takes scouting and the skills involved so seriously that she has sought membership in troops outside the U.S. She is a full, dues-paying member of a troop in Ontario, Canada — one of dozens of countries with co-ed scouting. In fact, Sydney recently earned the Chief Scout's Award, Canada's highest honor in scouting, and has the badge and a letter of congratulations from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to show for it. But she is determined to become an Eagle Scout as a full member of Troop 414, reaching the top achievement of an organization she has been part of nearly her entire life. https://www.npr.org/2017/04/29/526021195/meet-the-teenage-girl-who-wants-to-be-a-boy-scout -

@Back Pack your post was edited. No need for derogatory references. Don't confuse awards and achievements. Your achievements are not worthless nor are their worth determined by awards assuming you receive an award. And no one can make your achievements worthless. cc: @NJCubScouter @Sentinel947 -
This has been on my mind. Maybe a well-trained, trusted elite ranger scouting group that can go on outings , service activities without adults.

My understanding, Ms. Ireland wants admission into Boy Scouts now so she can meet all the same Eagle requirements by her 18th birthday. Time is not on her side.
