  1. That term is new to me too. I would recommend those who attempt to virtue signal, first take the high ground like back in the day.
  2. Bob J. Tilllerson was a scout*, a sailor who served in the U.S. Navy during and after World War Two, an outdoorsman, a scouter and scout executive, but most important he was father to three children. His son is Secretary of State Rex Tillerson who has also been involved in Scouting. He was 91. 3. Hard to understand parents who shop around for the best school, teachers, doctors, tutors, coaches ...would think Boy Scouts is the same everywhere. But when I ask, they remind me we are a national organization , wear the same uniform, same handbooks, same Oath and Law,... Well yes, but all scouting is local, too late. My $0.02
  4. Now called the next generation of Youth Protection or Youth Protection 2.0 or YPT2 or YPT-2 not to be confused with YPT-2 (circa 2015) ... registered leaders are to complete by Oct 1, 2018 . But note Adults accompanying units on activities who are present at the activity for 72 hours or more, must take YPT2. The 72 hours need not be consecutive. ( The Chicago Tribune reported that these adults , leaders or not, will also require a background checks but I have not been able to confirm. - RS) Two BSA Positions that are (still ridiculously - RS) exempt from taking YPT2 are institutional heads (i.e., head of the chartered organization) and adult partners in Tiger and Lion programs. https://www.scoutingvermont.org/uploads/4/7/2/2/47226097/gmc_ypt_updates.pdf http://www.montanabsa.org/youth-protection-training_ypt2/
  5. @karunamom3 I am curious. Did the Mayor participate in your Blue & Gold awards ceremony?
  6. What size, weight(empty) pack did you have and what was it's carry weight loaded?
  7. ...Benny’s shirt had “Bad Boy” on the back. I’m not sure if his mother told the Den Mother that was his name or if Benny’s reputation preceded him and the Den Mother put it on the back of his shirt to make him easier to identify. Much to my surprise, Benny turned out to be pretty good at Cub Scouting skills. He made a leather belt, started a fire and caught a fish. But … he used the belt like a bull whip, set the Scoutmaster’s shoe on fire and put the fish in the Den Mother’s purse.... A funny short read about Cub Scouting back in the day when black eyes were more prized than well anything. http://www.sandmountainreporter.com/article_f7f5908c-1b3b-11e8-aec2-73c0cb8b447e.html
  8. A South Jersey (flatlander) BSA Troop 26 (Germania,NJ) preparing for Philmont 2019 hired a mountain guide from Synnott Mountain Guides and summited Mt. Washington (NH) in Feb. 9. Update from KIFI/KIDK news: There were three groups of Boy Scouts in the 17 Mile Cave when it filled with smoke early Saturday morning but, it wasn't their fire. The scouts say a group of young men entered the cave while they were sleeping and played loud music and spray painted the walls before leaving. The first scout troop left, and the young men came back an hour later. "They were awakened by the sound of wood being dropped through the entrance," Clarke Farrer, Scout Executive for the Grand Teton Council Boy Scouts, said. "They said there was a loud noise. They didn't know what it was so they got up to find out what was going on. They saw bundles of firewood being thrown down inside the cave." The group built a fire inside the cave and began cooking hot dogs and drinking. "The scout leaders went over to them and said that there was scouts there," Farrer said. "And that they were bothering them and that the smoke from their fire was filling the cave and kids didn't care." That's when the other two scout troops decided to call 9-1-1 and evacuate. "The real sad part about the story is that the EMS person told the scout leaders that if either they had remained asleep or if they had stayed in that cave much longer that it's possible all of them could have been overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning and it could have been deadly," Farrer said. 10. @OldEagle83 welcome to scouter.com
  11. Ok then, agree to disagree and move on. Thanks. @NJCubScouter @LeCastor
  12. Clarke Farrer, SE Grand Teton Council, commented "The Scouts did not light the fire. After the Scouts and their leaders had gone to sleep, another group entered the cave, built a fire, and were partying. It was the smoke from their fire that caused the problems. " Which could explain why two of that party of four others "reportedly fled the scene". https://www.eastidahonews.com/2018/02/boy-scouts-leaders-evacuated-17-mile-cave-following-fire/ https://idahostatejournal.com/news/local/boy-scouts-evacuated-from-east-idaho-cave/article_21e99121-d078-5187-9e2c-9fba6e57049d.html
  13. Good points. Maybe when the smoke clears , we will know more. I have not camped in a cave, nor have I built a fire in a cave. Someone obviously got outside the cave to call 911.
  14. IMHO, merit badges were (long ago) more about the Adult Association Method . Advancement was secondary and perhaps a misnomer. In half or more of your merit badges, you were being introduced to new knowledge and skills to advance yourself in life later. The scout had to obtain the blue card and contact info from his Scoutmaster. The scout had to contact the Merit Badge Counselor himself, often more than once, and occasionally other more available MBC's. Council/District had to provide qualified counselors. My Archery MBC competed internationally, Firemanship was a NJ Fire Chief/Fire Warren, Electricity was a Westinghouse engineer, Electronics was a design engineer for ENIAC project and RCA. These men are spending time with me? How cool was that. My $0.02
  15. The American Red Cross has been offering free installation of smoke alarms across the country for nearly four years. ARC chapters often team with local fire departments or ask for volunteers (scouts) to install detectors and provide a safety talk. Perhaps there is a service project opportunity for your scouts with your local Red Cross chapter http://www.poconorecord.com/news/20180224/scouts-team-with-red-cross-to-promote-fire-safety http://www.redcross.org/local/new-hampshire-vermont/home-fire-safety/smoke-alarm http://www.tauntongazette.com/news/20180204/free-smoke-alarms-and-co-detectors-available-from-red-cross
  16. Another cave rescue. Lots of preparation and excitement was put into this Boy Scout Troop's big snow camping trip in the caves near Idaho Falls and then early this Sat Feb 24 morning around 2:40 a.m. everything went wrong. The reports to Idaho Falls Fire Department and Bonneville County Sheriff's Office said that there was smoke, lots of smoke coming from inside the 17 Mile Cave where 13 Boy Scouts and five leaders were camping. Upon the first engine’s arrival, Boy Scouts and leaders were evacuating the cave. Three additional ambulances were requested. An additional engine, a battalion chief and the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene. Crews entered the cave and began a search. Additional ambulances and engines arrived on scene to triage people and search the cave. A total of 13 Boy Scouts and 5 leaders were evacuated. Four additional people were in the cave, two of which reportedly fled the scene. Some individuals suffered minor smoke inhalation, but no civilians or firefighters were injured. There were no ambulance transports to the hospital. http://wow1043.com/13-idaho-boy-scouts-evacuated-from-cave/ https://idahostatejournal.com/news/local/boy-scouts-evacuated-from-east-idaho-cave/article_21e99121-d078-5187-9e2c-9fba6e57049d.html https://www.eastidahonews.com/2018/02/boy-scouts-leaders-evacuated-17-mile-cave-following-fire/
  17. How does your Cubmaster feel about this? If I was Cubmaster, I would jump at the opportunity.
  18. Glad you did not feel bullied. As to getting wrapped on the knuckles, what are you referring to? I found no warnings issued to you. I only found a misunderstanding as to why a thread was locked which had nothing to do with you as Sentinel947 explained to you and you acknowledged "Fair enough, thanks". Thanks for the feedback. -RS @NJCubScouter , @LeCastor
