  5. MANORVILLE - Suffolk police say five Boy Scouts were hospitalized after they were struck by a car in Manorville Sunday afternoon. Rescue workers were forced to administer CPR to one of the victims. Another was airlifted to the trauma center at Stony Brook University Hospital. https://abc7ny.com/police-5-hospitalized-after-car-plows-into-group-of-boy-scouts/4377783/
  6. SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. near Van Buren County State Park According to police, an initial investigation determined that scout was digging into the side of a dune hill and was accompanied by two other members of the troop. He managed to dig far enough into the side of the hill and crawl into the small space, but the instability of the sand hill caused it to collapse while he was inside. The two boy scouts who accompanied Wilson did not notice his disappearance for up to 30 minutes, police said. Leaders from the troop were attempting life-saving measures upon the response of South Haven PD, Knizewski said, and were later relieved by South Haven Area Emergency Services who later called for air-care assistance. https://wwmt.com/news/local/12-year-old-boy-scout-dies-at-van-buren-county-state-park-after-being-buried-by-sand https://wsbt.com/news/local/12-year-old-boy-scout-dies-after-being-buried-by-sand-in-van-buren

  8. Ambitious. My scouts would have a hard time understanding those causes, but they could understand miscommunication and misunderstanding as causes of conflicts. I think games could readily me made, maybe even by the scouts themselves. This is an interesting blog In 1914 there were no mobile telephones, televisions or ipods. There were no computers and so no twitter or You Tube. Cinema and radio were still a novelty. People received their news via the tabloid papers, telegrams or written letters. And none of these methods was entirely reliable. Communications between individuals and governments tended to be slow and were often delayed, so that events on the ground moved faster than the reception of letters or telegrams – a crucial factor in the confusion between the Kaiser and Nicholas II immediately preceding hostilities. https://www.ool.co.uk/blog/world-war-one-fatal-flaws-1914-communication/ In Cub Scouts, we watched the Christmas Truce of 1914 movie documentary and discussed. An amazing moment in history, no mustard gas, no machine guns, ...Christmas.
  9. And now, a few kind words for Badge Magic.... 9/26/2018: Lighthouse for the Blind-St. Louis (LHB), a nonprofit that provides manufacturing and packaging services, has acquired the assets of Bellevue, Washington-based Badge Magic. Lighthouse for the Blind-St. Louis, also known as LHB Industries Inc., assists individuals who are legally blind through employment, education and support services. It derives sales revenue through its Quake Kare brand of emergency survival products, and RapidFix and Tear Mender adhesives. In addition, it has two manufacturing, assembly, warehousing and distribution plants where it produces medical kits, catheters, aerosol and liquid paints, and other products for business and government customers. LHB expects to add at least 2 new employees because of the acquisition, officials said. It currently employs 48 people who are legally blind. https://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/news/2018/09/26/st-louis-nonprofit-buys-washington-adhesive.html

  12. Scouting organizations are still registering to participate in the 2018 Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) over the October 19 – 21 weekend. With about 1 month to go, JOTA Coordinator Jim Wilson, K5ND, told ARRL that registration is “probably on target” at this point. US registrations stood at 235 as of the end of last week. Right after JOTA 2017, 489 US locations had signed up, although that included both Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) participants, which, Wilson said, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have “remained steadfast” in considering separate events, although, he noted, this is not the case at the world level. “Our goals are primarily to grow participation,” Wilson told ARRL. “The World JOTA-JOTI Team has set a goal of 3 million participants by 2021; 2017 saw 1.5 million worldwide. Sign-ups at the world level right now are at 1,428 locations. Wilson said that, in the US, many locations wait until the last minute to register their participation. In 2017, some 7,900 Scouts took part in JOTA, down by nearly 10,800 participants from 2016, but topping participation for 2014 and 2015. Total radio contact numbers were down from 2016 and 2015. “We’ve also put in place a number of aids to help people improve their on-the-air experience, which will be challenging without sunspots,” Wilson pointed out. “We’ve provided a video of how to work HF for JOTA. We’ve also provided a quick reference card to help Scouts during the QSO.” Recommended JOTA frequencies are listed on the K2BSA website. “Operators should note that these frequencies are starting points to find QSOs,” Wilson added. “They can also turn the dial to find other stations on the air. It’s not like a repeater.” A list of Girl Scout activities supported by JOTA-JOTI has also been posted. Held each year on the third full weekend in October, JOTA is the world’s largest Scouting event. JOTA uses Amateur Radio to link Scouts and hams around the world. Scouts of any age and gender can participate, from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and Venturers. Radio amateurs at the local level are encouraged to work with a scout council or unit to set up a JOTA station or arrange to have Scouts visit their shacks. “You can also participate just by making QSOs with the many JOTA stations that will be on the air,” Wilson said. Source link: http://www.arrl.org/news/scouting-s-2018-jamboree-on-the-air-set-for-october-19-21 I too have been puzzled about JOTA and JOTI being separate events.
  13. One week later... Sgt. Danial Marshall of the Idaho Army National Guard presented Hayden Meadows Elementary School fifth-graders Nalan Tuttle, Jack LeBreck and Casey Dolan with challenge coins and Defender of Freedom Awards at their school Sept. 21. Marshall said it’s rare to see youngsters practicing flag etiquette. He also wanted to let the kids know that what they did was meaningful to him as a soldier. Marshall gave each of the boys a challenge coin, plus a Defender of Freedom Award. The coins are something that noncommissioned officers and officers hand out to “symbolize unit identity and esprit de corps,” explained Marshall. He also encouraged them to look up the history of the coins, and to learn more about the U.S. flag. Nalan said that when Marshall showed up, “I had no idea what to say except thank you for the certificate and the coin.” Casey said the award “was surprising and very honorable.” More at Source: https://www.cdapress.com/local_news/20180925/unflagging_patriotism
  14. @GreenBarHill welcome to scouter.com, a relaxing oasis from Cornhusker football.
  15. “They have this range all set up where the boys can shoot an M4, M240, and M249. It maybe the first and last chance a lot of these guys get to shoot some of these weapons. They do have some bigger guns and they were telling them that if they want to shoot those, they have to join the Army,” said SM Murdock. What a great Scout outing. Thanks to US Army and SM Murdock. https://www.wibw.com/content/news/Boy-Scouts-shoot-Army-weapons-at-Fort-Rileys-32nd-Annual-Apple-Day--494075211.html Though I did not enter the military, Scouting ,and only Scouting, provided me some exposure to military - staying at USAF bases on Philmont trip, Air Force Academy, airshows, ship visits, range shooting...all great.
  16. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 22, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A video titled “A New Direction for Children and Youth in 2020” has shed some light on the program The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is planning to replace its involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. https://gephardtdaily.com/breaking-home/lds-church-releases-video-on-new-youth-program-slated-for-2020-will-replace-scouting/
  17. Update 9/21/2018: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided a few more details about the initiative in a statement that said a full and detailed description will come later because different aspects of the program are still being tested. ... The statement reiterates that the faith’s program will be similar to Scouting with an emphasis on outdoors, service work and character building. It won’t have a ranking system like the one culminating in an Eagle Scout recognition that many generations of Mormons strived to achieve as a life milestone. It will be for boys and girls. “Camps and other outdoor activities have always been and will continue to be a prominent part of gospel learning, building relationships, and strengthening faith in Jesus Christ,” the statement said. “Leaders, youth, and parents will be empowered to identify and provide outdoor activities that invite spiritual experiences and meet the unique needs of their children, young women, and young men.” https://www.pressherald.com/2018/09/21/mormons-prepared-for-life-without-boy-scouts/ https://www.lds.org/youth/childrenandyouth?lang=eng
  18. I agree with Peter Thiel 's statement in the posted video that reformation of college education will come from the outside. IMO, outside from education consumers, parents and students, in high schools. My younger son is not attending high school, he is taking courses at a local community college - better teachers, better courses. He has friends doing the same, other friends attending charter or private schools , others being home-schooled, and still others though physically in a public school are taking Virtual High School classes from Stanford or BYU. If grassroot's educational consumerism can prevail over the state DOE and teacher union, reformation of college education will follow. My $0.02,
  19. “The Pine Tree Council of the Boy Scouts of America is very thankful to SIG SAUER for their leadership and participation in the Maine Shooting Sports Experience. This event is a cornerstone to funding and expanding our scouting programs. Thanks to the marquis sponsorship from SIG SAUER, we were able to increase our fundraising by 10% over last year,” added Eric Tarbox, Scout Executive/CEO, Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America. “Our Scouts were also thrilled to be joined by professional shooter Lena Miculek who was very generous with her time and talent, and participated on one our teams and provided lessons. SIG SAUER really made this a once in a lifetime experience for all of the participants that will be talked about for years to come.” The shooting event was held on September 6th – 7th and included a competition event at Camp Hinds in Raymond, Maine. https://www.ammoland.com/2018/09/lena-miculek-attends-sig-sauer-maine-shooting-sports-experience/
  20. I am amused, tinkled pink actually, at all the young , talented makers and entrepreneurs who are saying no to Apple, Google, Amazon, Wall Street, ... job offers and starting their own companies. Quite different from back in the day, when we were trained to be employees of GM, IBM, GE, Wall Street... My $0.02

  22. About 10 people die each day nationally from drowning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is about 3,536 fatal drownings annually. The Utah Department of Health estimates 26 people in Utah die annually from unintentional drowning. Children 4 years old and younger have the highest drowning rates in Utah. Forty-three percent of child drownings in Utah happen in open bodies of water, 30 percent happen in pools, 18 percent happen in bathtubs and nine percent happen in “other” situations, according to the Utah Department of Health. For every child who dies from drowning, there is an average of five other children who receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion in water. https://universe.byu.edu/2018/09/18/drowning-is-a-leading-cause-of-death-1/
