The Transatlantic Council 75th Anniversary D-Day event (Normandy Camporee) will take place in April 12-14, rather than June 6th, due to the large number of scouts expected (about 5,000). The closing ceremony will be held at the American Cemetery at Colleville sur Mer, where Scouts will present a commemorative wreath. https://scoutingevent.com/802-NormandyCamporee2019

Bear Grylls is new World Scout Ambassador
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Scouting Around the World
IMHO, part of Adult Association for scouts is learning to process the imperfections and sometime contradictions that are adults. Adults make mistakes but hopefully they also fess up and make amends. Adults want me to do as they say but not as they do, the rules don't apply to them? Adults accept some bad or some imperfections for the greater good. All confusing to process especially when you are young. My $0.02, P.S. A few years ago, our unit was camping in Acadia (Maine). I thought it would be a hoot to have a local give our scouts some lobster cooking tips. The other adults present, which were way, way too many (lobster), were horrified. What bring Martha Stewart here, She's a convicted felon! -
As I recall these were reasons - space and travel distance.

Bear Grylls is new World Scout Ambassador
RememberSchiff replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Scouting Around the World
Bear Grylls guest edits next month's Lonely Planet magazine. There is a preview on Daily Mail...good read and photos. Experience has now taught me to prepare well. One of my favourite parts of my job is being Chief Scout, and I love that at the heart of the Scouts is this life-changing wisdom: 'Be Prepared'. It is a genius motto. All these preparations help to keep us safe, although sometimes the best safety tips don't require anything beyond old-fashioned common sense, such as letting people know where you're going, how you're planning on getting around and when you're due to arrive. Safety matters. We want our life to be a series of epic adventures, rather than just one! But we mustn't let caution kill adventure. Like so much in life, it's all a balance. Some people say there's nowhere left to explore. They say that we've already mapped and studied it all, so why bother? But travel is about so much more than maps, or ticking off a series of locations, or bragging about stamps in a passport. We travel because it betters us, it broadens and enriches us. And ultimately, it unites us. The best-travelled people I know are almost always the most tolerant. When we are exposed to all the things that make us different, we see more of what unites us. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/travel_news/article-6690729/Survivalist-Bear-Grylls-life-changing-global-escapades.html -

outdoor campfire cooking but sleeping in a cabin
RememberSchiff replied to Treflienne's topic in Advancement Resources
Good question. IMHO, TF 2a/b are to be done with said campout in TF 1a/b. They go together. SC 2e can be done on any campout. Cabin-ins (as opposed to campouts) are a great "controlled"opportunity to practice skills ahead of that campout. They can still plan, cook, and cleanup (minimize mess!). Focus on the fun. Secret ingredient . Best shaped pancake - is that Mickey Mouse or Ratatouille? One hand egg cracking and how scrambled eggs came about. Best non-mix hot chocolate. .. KISMIF My $0.02, -

In one photo, the alleged SPL is wearing his merit badge sash over wrong shoulder. My guess he's a Skrull not SPL.

SOLO and NOLS have "school" patches but not "training/certification" patches, instead after successfully completing training, you receive an official signed, dated certification card.

Days after Apollo 11 lunar landing on July 20, 1969, our returning Philmont contingent stopped at the Air Force Museum which was adjacent to Wright Patterson AFB. As impressive as all the displays were (B-36, XB-70!), I wanted more -- Blue Book. I asked every officer I saw on the museum grounds for a real tour of Wright Patterson. At the end of 1969, the Air Force terminated Project Blue Book at Wright Patterson. If pesky scouts, like me, were a contributing reason, it was redacted from their final report. That is as close as I came to UFO's in scouts.

"It is evident from the film material that during the shooting there were breaches to the regulations and rules of conduct in protected areas: entering and swimming in the water basin of the Karakashevo lake, lighting a fire, and catching and killing an animal," a spokesperson for the ministry said in a statement to the AFP news agency. Well if he broke the rules...still I remember "frogging" at night as a scout. There were no laws against it...well maybe we didn't exactly have permission to use camp rowboat. Dark lake with croaking bullfrogs. Cut and sharpen your wood spear, flashlight, rowboat. Later Coleman stove, pot of water, to cook legs. -
Girl Scouts Suing the Boy Scouts

Well this is getting more interesting as to why Warner Brothers and DC have been quiet. Last fall, "Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) teamed up with the DC Super Hero Girls to inspire more girls to participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program®, the largest girl-led entrepreneurship program in the world. The program gives girls real-world experiences managing money, setting goals, meeting deadlines, learning the basics of marketing to customers, and having fun as they learn and earn. This year, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment will collaborate with GSUSA to foster the female leaders of tomorrow through the 2019 Cookie Pro contest. Using the power of the DC Super Hero Girls, the contest will inspire Girl Scouts to be smart and courageous as everyday Super Heroes. It will also highlight and reward exceptional cookie bosses who take the lead, set high goals for themselves, bring positive change to their communities, and learn valuable entrepreneurial skills." https://www.girlscouts.org/en/press-room/press-room/news-releases/2018/warner-bros-and-dc-entertainment-team-up-with-gsusa.html -

Girl Scouts Suing the Boy Scouts

The Girl Scouts have since announced that (scout) is no longer using the image to sell cookies. https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900056980/jason-mamoa-samoas-this-girl-scout-put-jason-momoas-picture-on-boxes-of-samoa-cookies-and-they-sold-out-like-hotcakes.html FB comment: “Girl Scouts of Colorado still not addressing how it is right what was done. Joke or not... it is still teaching this young lady that copyright infringement is permitted and stealing is ok.” Should the Girl Scouts turn over all money from the Momoas sales to Warner Brothers? Could be a great opportunity to learn the skills of business ethics as mentioned in a 2011 essay Samoas to CEOs: 5 Things Girl Scouts Can Teach Businesses https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/1577-business-lessons-girl-scouts.html -
2019 GUIDE TO SAFE SCOUTING
RememberSchiff replied to John-in-KC's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Thank you... Great idea, up here in Mass. only a few high school programs, e.g. Nashoba Regional High School EMT Cadet program, have received an age exception from the state to allow 16yr old EMT trainees. Meanwhile local towns end up contracting with private companies to cover daytime EMS. -

Fuzzy math with ride-alongs and youth protection. There is a training module on Ride Along Safety on my.Scouting. IMHO the BSA needs to understand when you are in another person's house, it is their rules. Sure the BSA can "certify" police, fire, ems departments and personnel for ride-alongs, but not micromanage the patrol car , engine, ambulance crews. At what point do we teach self-protection from blood-borne pathogens, patients, and co-workers? My $0.02, We are... -

Back in the day, I recall more map reading, planning a route involved with Hiking merit badge. It was destination first, routing for distance second. I had to know location of police stations, hospitals, likely phone booths. Now, like Swimming and Cycling, IMO it is just going the distance. Have a 5 mile rail trail nearby, 4 laps with little elevation change or navigation. 20 miles, just git er done. One scout wanted to hike around his high school track - 80 laps.

Merit Badges must be earned in groups of 2?
RememberSchiff replied to iguanita's topic in Advancement Resources
@iguanita welcome to scouter.com -
Easier to find Emergency Prep merit badge classes year round. Some troops offer them in Sept which is Emergency Preparedness Month. It is also frequently offered at Merit badge universities year round. Lifesaving merit badge classes are harder to find outside of summer camp. What I typically see is a scout takes Swimming at first summer camp. At that time , the scout is usually 11 and without many of the Lifesaving prereqs - SC and FC requirements, swimming skill, and endurance. Before those prereqs are fulfilled, a year or more later, the scout has already earned Emergency Prep.
