  1. The short session seems to be maybe 5-6 weeks long. Surely one can schedule hiking trips around that.
  2. The article notes that the trip was planned a year ago but doesn't note that NC typically has a short session in even-numbered years at this exact time of the year. So Rep. Moffitt knew in advance that there would be a conflict.
  3. Right, Catholics in Maryland favored "tolerance" (they were in the minority after all), Protestants favored "official." I don't think Catholics in British colonies sought anything more than tolerance (not that there weren't Catholic confessional states elsewhere in the New World, such as Mexico). Maryland Protestants revoked the 1649 religious tolerance act almost as soon as they came to power (they came to power in 1652 and revoked it in 1654; it was reinstated in 1658 and lasted until 1692). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland_Toleration_Act As an aside, the reference in the article to "Unitarians" is an anachronism as there probably weren't any (and certainly none who called themselves such) in North America in the 17th century.
  4. That's an odd statement. Maybe you mean that Catholics (such as the Calvert family) tried to resist Protestant attempts at religious hegemony?
  5. In other countries one can acquire epi-pens for a first aid kit. I really don't see the reason why one can't in the United States.
  6. Interesting how "what God is" is left up to the scout, but not "what a political event is." I would think the former would be far more important than the latter.
  7. What are the defining characteristics of a Protestant-style prayer? As a Catholic I like fixed prayers so to me, a Protestant-style prayer is one that is ad-hoc, made up on the spur of the moment, etc. I'm wondering how a Jewish person distinguishes Protestant-style prayers from Jewish.
  8. I wonder what non-Christian scouts did back in the day? http://www.pinetreeweb.com/1929-times10.htm
  9. Speaking of joining the BPSA: http://bpsa-us.org/2014/06/welcome-to-geoffrey-mcgrath-and-98th-rainier-scout-group/
  10. I dunno, the original headline sounds pretty slanted to me. Right, he attacked the policy.
  11. My impression is that the 'agents provocateurs' were the "former and current" scouts in the parade. But I could be wrong.
  12. I may not be following this thread closely but I missed the ad hominem.
  13. Whenever I read stuff like this I think of the adults from Peanuts cartoons "whah-whuh-whah-whuh-whuh"
  14. I believe the article cited in the OP said "former and current," so it would appear that at least some of them are current.
  15. So if there is a rule against taking part in political activity (e.g., a "Gay Pride" parade) while in uniform, one ought to obey that rule and work for its change rather than disobeying it. Right?
  16. fred, "Scout" is not a BSA trademark. It is protected because of the BSA's Congressional charter. The issue with Hacker Scouts was particularly silly because Hacker Scouts made no pretense of being a scouting association and few would have confused them with the BSA.
  17. I don't think one can really argue with that. If Trail Life were not a competitor to BSA it would not accept ranks and badges earned in the BSA.
  18. On the subject of the growth of the UK Scouts Association: https://members.scouts.org.uk/newsandviews/module/31/578/membership-numbers-on-the-rise/cat/428 So almost 90% of the increase in membership is from adults. It doesn't say whether the growth in female membership is among adults or youth but it's possible given the numbers above that membership among boys and young men has actually gone down.
