Get Ready For New Requirements In Faith
Peregrinator replied to John-in-KC's topic in Issues & Politics
I am not sure that is accurate. Catholics (and Orthodox) view the books that Protestants call "apocrypha" (well, at least some of them) as canonical. Sentinel listed them above. And any well-formed Catholic will tell you that prayer for the dead can be justified from 2 Machabees 12.- 490 replies

"Higher power" isn't sufficient to describe God since it is comparative, not superlative.- 490 replies

As far as I've been able to determine, B-P never said that "scouting was a game with a purpose". What he did say is "SCOUTING IS A GAME for boys, under the leadership of boys, in which elder brothers can give their younger brothers healthy environment and encourage them to healthy activities such as will help them to develop CITIZENSHIP". (I don't know where the quote that ends with "under the direction of a man" comes from ... that might be apocryphal too.) And of course his comments weren't limited to cubbing. I suppose it's possible that he said it to someone and it's been repeated as part of an oral tradition.

Well, Rick Perry has made the news again. Ain't politics fun?
Peregrinator replied to skeptic's topic in Issues & Politics
Packsaddle, that is very true. However (and I'm not saying this is true in Perry's case), the extent of corruption often isn't widely known until things like this are brought to light. And if a state doesn't allow recall elections then a felony conviction might be the only way to remove a public official from office. Before I read the article I cited, I thought this was a pretty cut and dry case of witch-hunting, and I don't even like Rick Perry. (Of course, I'm not a Texan so what I know about Perry comes from the national media.) Now I am less certain that it is a witch hunt. -

I got the impression that the bathroom was out of the line of sight (and, of course, the bathroom itself is out of sight), otherwise why would it be too far for the cubs to walk on their own? So that would mean either one cub with his dad or two cubs with two adults. For example, what happens if one of the cubs needs help in the bathroom? It could happen at that age.

Depends on how long they're sitting there. If they were caught behind a bus or buses they could have been there for quite some time. And packsaddle is quite correct (this might be the first time I've ever written those words, and could very well be the last time!) -- there is zero justification here for a border official to aim a loaded gun at a boy's head.

Right, it is the charter that allows BSA to trademark such generic terms (ordinarily trademarks of generic terms are rejected). Here is the judge himself on the Wrenn case: And from the opinion: The judge seems to be referring to composite trademarks ("Cub Scout," "Eagle Scout," etc.) when invoking trademark law alone.

In France, for example, the Fédération du scoutisme Français (WOSM/WAGGGS) has about 135,000 members in five associations. The Conférence Française de Scoutisme (non-WOSM) has about 35,000 members in three associations. The Scouts Unitaires de France (non-WOSM) have about 23,000 members. These are only the organizations that have recognition from the French government. There are a bunch of smaller associations as well without recognition. So yes, the non-WOSM organizations are smaller than the WOSM organization but not insignificant.

"Scout" by itself, as well as "scouting," are probably too generic to stand on their own as trademarks (the BSA doesn't even claim the former as a trademark) without the protection of the Congressional charter. "Do you Think they Would evolve to be More like Scouting Programs in other Countries?" Other countries typically have more than one scouting association. Aside from Canada, I don't know of a country other than the U.S. in which only the "official" WOSM-affiliated entity is allowed to use the word "scout." Look at France, Germany, even the UK.

Therefore, it is OK to expose adolescents to it. Right? -
Boy Scouts march in Utah Gay Pride Parade
Peregrinator replied to AZMike's topic in Issues & Politics
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_analogy So packsaddle seems to be arguing: Gay Pride parades are characterized by transvestitism, B&D horseplay, and near nudity. My campfires are also characterized by transvestitism, B&D horseplay, and near nudity. Since my campfires are totally appropriate for youth, Gay Pride parades are also appropriate for youth. -
