I'm an Advancement Chair. While what happened to you would irritate me, I would enter the records. I would probably also have a long talk with the SM about my reservations about it. Since these families are leaving anyway, it would bother me a little less, although I would feel sorry for their next troop.

17 should have gone home after Event 2. Mom should have been called at 2 am, and told to pick 17 up ASAP. IMHO, ducktaping boys to beds is unacceptable. I can figure out no part of the Scout Law that would think that is anything but unacceptable. #3 no big deal. #4 would also result in being sent home. The popping on the chin, not the water down the back. I'm wondering what's going on with 17? Sounds like something major is wrong with him (are parents getting divorced, is there a new step-parent in picture, did he flunk out of high school/not get accepted to college, break up with a girlfrined) if this is a new set of behaviors, or he's been allowed to get away with unscoutlike behavior for a long time.

The Scouts, at least in my troop, find the vent to be much more stylish.....

How does a Lone Scout get a POR for Star, Life and Eagle?
-
In terms of Greece and the Olympics, from what I've been hearing, the Olympic games are part of the reason for the crisis. They spent way too much money on it, and didn't recoop much of it.

I'm with OGE. EDGE is not the reason those boys didn't have the Scout skills they needed. EDGE wasn't a requirement until 2010.

The only case of a lone scout I've known have been homeschooled twins. Their mother was the MBC for most of their merit badges. They both Eagled.

Quayze is on the money. It is how we do things as well. The Scout comes to the Advancement chair (me) and asks for me to record his advancement (the SMC and Scout Spirit, usually) and about the BOR. Then, either I then go to the Committee Chair, and mention that we have a Scout wishing for a BOR, or if I'm busy, I ask the Scout to ask for a BOR. We then schedule it ASAP, sometimes at that time (if we have committee members lollygagging around), but more often the next meeting.

Does every boy deserve an Eagle?

I agree with Twocubdad. This is either a troll, or somebody with way too many problems to deal with on an internet forum. -
I resisted the Scout pants for my first 5 yrs as a Den Leader. Then, when I saw the Troop that my oldest was going to cross over to, was a full uniform troop, I decided to go for the pants (got a closeout on the pre-Centennial switchbacks). I like them, especially as shorts. I have no problems with the cargo pockets--they hold my wallet and whatever else I need just fine.

That is an issue for the WDL and the SM to discuss. I was a WDL for two Dens (two different years). My choice was for the boys to crossover shortly after the Blue and Gold (end of February)(crossover was early March. I thought they needed one last B&G before leaving. This year, the WDL (same pack) crossing over to our troop decided to do the crossover the last week in January. We'll see how it goes.

That hypothetical question

Has to be a trick question. All non-LDS scoutmasters drink coffee. -
Stats show that the Groundhog is correct about 40% of the time. BTW, most of the time he does see his shadow--100 out of 116 recorded instances. I tend to believe General Beauregard Lee, a groundhog that lives in metro Atlanta. He usually doesn't see his shadow :-)

My expectations: Minimum Fishing/swimming/boating lake Showers, flush toilets in developed area Primitive area away from developed area Rifle/archery/skeet ranges Hiking trails A rappelling tower would be nice. -
Buf, Actually it said "In units with fewer than three registered committee members available to serve, it is permissible to use knowledgeable parents (not those of the candidate) or other adults (registered or not) who understand Boy Scoutings aims" Non-Committee members can serve on a BOR if your troop has fewer than three registered committee members.

We schedule BORs right after the Scout has a Scoutmaster conference. Sometimes we can convene a BOR in the last 15 minutes of a meeting after the SMC. Other times it might take a few weeks. We have a lot of committee members (4 or 5) usually present at meetings. They are there to do what they can for the boys.

Show Pity on your Advancement Chairs!

I agree with BuffaloSkipper, the problem is that the operation of the local Scout shop is counter to that method. Rank advancement patches can only be bought in conjunction with an advancement form. Luckily my troop has a supply of rank advancement patches from the past. We replenish it with patches bought using new advancement forms. However, a new troop, or one that has grown tremendously, would not have that option. -
Disagree totally about texting. I think it is going to be more permanent than facebook. You send a text to the person next to you because you don't want the other people around you to hear it.
-
sr540, You can send an email as a text. Find out their carrier, and use the correct domain. For example for AT&T it's number@txt.att.net (number being their ten digit phone number).

I would be worried about a Scoutmaster who made it to every single activity and meeting. Everybody needs a break every now and then. Everybody has other responsibilities.

Need an Opinion, Not Scouting Related

Depends on their age. The Exxon Valdez wrecked in 1989--i.e. 22 yrs ago. I wouldn't expect anybody younger than 40 to necessarily get that joke. -
Eagle Candidate using raised funds to feed workcrew
perdidochas replied to raisinemright's topic in Advancement Resources
I'm basically in agreement with lrsap. I do agree that paying for a pizza party afterwards shouldn't be part of the donation, but feeding/hydrating the crew in the middle of the work day should be. -
Well, we can still come back from the campout on Sunday, but just have to be back in time for Mass. In our case, this year they've instituted a 6 oclock pm mass. Things may differ in different parts of the country. I find Catholics in the Southeast to be much more hard-core about church attendance than Catholics in some other parts of the country.
-
Troops that are sponsored by Catholic Churches need to make arrangements for the Scouts to attend Mass. Scouts' Own isn't sufficient to satisfy their Sunday obligation. Also, some Scouts have homework that needs to be finished on Sunday afternoon.

Eng61, I would agree if they gave out weapons and not pocketknives....... In the state I live in, pocketknives with blades under 4 inches aren't legally considered weapons.
