Why there is no turning back on changing membership standards...
perdidochas replied to DeanRx's topic in Issues & Politics
Unfortunately' date=' that may have already happened. At my last college reunion, I was with a group of alums and university folks, one of which worked in the admissions office. She said that mentioning you were an Eagle Scout on the application was a negative because of the association with bigotry. She recommended leaving any reference to the BSA off any application. Very sad. I didn't follow up, so I don't know if she was just giving her personal opinion, or the official opinion of the admissions office.[/quote'] I'm not sure I would want my son in a college where being an Eagle Scout is considered a bad thing...... -

OGE will definitely be missed here. He had a unique viewpoint that I always enjoyed reading. My prayers go out to his family. -
Current BSA Policy Vs local option poll
perdidochas replied to MichScouter's topic in Issues & Politics
How about the same thing when Explorer Posts got moved into L4L. Or make gods optional, like it is for oaths in court. As an aside, here's a billionaire former scout on the issue: ALLEN: Should the Boy Scouts of America rescind its ban on gay members and leaders? GATES: Absolutely. ALLEN: …Why? GATES: Because it’s 2013. I have no problem with the local option for gay leaders/scouts--as long as gay leaders are not forced on every unit--I think the CO should have the choice of leadership of their units. I have a problem with watering down the Scout oath to either be meaningless, or to take out the reference to God. -

Current BSA Policy Vs local option poll
perdidochas replied to MichScouter's topic in Issues & Politics
I got the survey as well, I think they were not just fishing for the viability of the local option, but were also trying to figure some things out about YPT changes. I didn't think it was that lightweight. I was just expecting a vote on local option vs. current status. I did have the survey set up for scouters though. -
I'm the Advancement Chair for the troop. We used to use Troopmaster, but have just moved over to Troopwebhost. For purely tracking advancement/activities and use by the Advancement Coordinator, Troopmaster is a much better program. It has the ability to print rank/merit badge cards (need an add on to do this with troopwebhost), and has a much better selection of reports (including permission slips). Troopwebhost is a great overall program. It not only tracks advancement sufficiently (not as good as TM, but ok), it also tracks finances, gives a web portal to troop information, and has the ability to send out emails/newsletters, etc. Troopwebhost allows scouts (and parents) to log in and check their recorded advancement, and camp account information. Basically I see the TM/TWH comparison as lockblade vs. multi-tool. TM is the lockblade (an excellent knife). TWH is a multitool--as a knife, it's sufficient, but it's also a pair of pliers and a screwdriver.

Who can remove a Cubmaster?
perdidochas replied to ChuckConnors's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Because they have the authority based on their position. The COR is the official representative for the Charter Organization. Basically, the Charter Organization trumps anybody else on the choosing of CM (unless the proposed CM is gay/atheist). -

The problem is that it esconced in populat cultures.

I think bnelon44's idea about not giving rank patches until internet advancement is done is a good one. In the future, I will wait until I put the rank advancement into Troop WebHost (our record keeping system) before giving rank patches. That said, I can update that on my smartphone.

Service Hours... double dipping ok?
perdidochas replied to SMT224's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Our Scoutmaster's rule is that service hours have to be pre-approved by him, and that the Scout has to be representing Boy Scouts to get credit. For example, if they are in the Builder's Club (Middle School Kiwanis affiliate), and do a service project as part of the Builder's club, that wouldn't count for Scouts. They have to be specifically representing the Scouts to count. (one real general rule is that it has to be done in Scout activity or field uniform). In terms of the school thing, that's up to the schools to decide if Scout service hours count as school service hours. Around here, they do. -
Service Hours... double dipping ok?
perdidochas replied to SMT224's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Well, we are talking 21 hrs plus an Eagle project. 1 hr for Second Class, 6 hrs for Star, 6 hrs for Life, and 8 hrs for Citizenship in the Community. The problem is that basically we are making a rule to require what the boys should already be doing. I don't think double dipping between school and scouts is a big deal, as long as the school service hours are not done during school time. I don't think it's fraudulent. That said, my boys have never been delayed for rank by service hours, and they do a lot of service that I would never have thought about counting as service hours. For example, both are altar servers at our church. I never considered that service in terms of service hours. It's just part of what they do. -
Service Hours... double dipping ok?
perdidochas replied to SMT224's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Our Scoutmaster has the view that if the work is done by the boys AS boy scouts (meaning they are in at least an activity uniform and are actively representing the Boy Scouts), double dipping is ok. It's up to the other organization to determine the same. I know as Advancement Chair, I recently did a report of all of the service project hours. he turned it into school as part of a state scholarship. -
When exactly can a scout earn his rank badge?
perdidochas replied to 92hatchattack's topic in Cub Scouts
When I was a Cub den leader, I never delayed rank advancement. If a boy earned his Bear badge on January 1, he'd get his rank at the next pack meeting. If the boy earned his Bear badge on May 5, he'd get his rank at the next pack meeting. Except for AOL, I think it's rushing the program to try to finish the rank before Blue and Gold. Blue and Gold is a celebration of scouting. It shouldn't be an end to the program year. -
BSA National leadership or lack of and the local option
perdidochas replied to ghst's topic in Issues & Politics
How would today's YP policies not work with gay leaders or gay scouts? They work with female leaders, and they work with Venture Scouts.
