Webelos - 4th time ... a lot less fun
perdidochas replied to fred johnson's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Good advice, and it is a good way to get the boys ready for BSA advancement. -
Updated Scouting Safely Information

How secure are paper copies? I just don't see that thumb drive scans of the medical forms being that much more insecure than the paper copies. I do agree that the cloud would be an unacceptable place for the medical forms, but I doubt very much that google can easily read scanned pdfs (i.e. the kinds that are basically images, rather than text files). From what I read in RichardB's links, I think national is working on a cloud solution for storage of med forms. -

Convicted, registered predator attends Troop fundraiser
perdidochas replied to RememberSchiff's topic in Issues & Politics
The offender involved was a scouter who preyed on one of his Scouts, not a victim of PC like you mention above. Dundas is one of the men who are deeply involved in the decline of Boy Scouts. -
Troop disbands on a high note

I agree. If you see the Pack floundering, you need to help them out. -

Since it was an assault on one of his Scouts, the man should stay away from Scout functions. -
Well, while my Cub Scout camping experience wasn't great, I love camping with the Troop. They are pretty good (especially when I see them at camporees next to other troops). We've got about 25 boys in the troop, ranging from 3 Eagles (ages 15-17), four or five Life Scouts, four or five Star Scouts, six or seven First class, and five or six S-T-2 scouts.

I pretty much agree. The problem is that there are a lot of men who think they know the basics who don't. They'll all want to start in intermediate...... I know I was less than impressed by my IOLS experience, but I had it a year after I'd started with the Troop as a committee member, albeit the committee member that goes on 80% of the campouts. I had camped with the Boys for a year, and had been a Scout (and a Webelos Den Leader for 2 1/2 yrs). I knew 90% of the basics. I taught some of my IOLS classmates how to tie the basic knots (well except for the timber hitch, which I didn't master until this year). I would have liked an intermediate course, and would love an advanced course.

when is the best time to switch packs

To echo everybody else, go someplace else for Webelos. -
Depends on the situation. With Cub Scouts I agree. With Boy Scouts, the parents eat first. If we didn't, we might not eat :-)

This pack is all messed up. If they are in the 6th grade they CANNOT be Webelos according to rules. http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/CubScouts/FAQS/joining.aspx Those boys should be crossing over NOW. The Pack is wrong. They have to move up when they are in the 6th grade. Crossing over is when a scouts moves from Webelos to Boy Scouts. It is not a Pack function. It is often confused with Arrow of Light, which is a pack function. Is there another Pack around? If so, run!!!!!! If not, can your boy join the next younger group in the Pack. You need to go to the Council and talk to them about all of this. It's just wrong.

I'm confused. Do you mean most of the boys in the den are in 5th grade now, May 2014? If so, they need to be crossing over now, or when they finish the 5th grade this summer. If so, does that mean they plan to crossover when they are in the 6th grade? I'm confused. They can't be Webelos and in the 6th grade. What grade is your son in? Also, crossing over is not up to the Webelos Den Leader--it's up to the Scoutmaster/Committee chair of the Troop. Crossing over is a Troop function, not a Pack or Den function. If the troop will take him, he can crossover once he's 10 and has the AOL, or once he's finished 5th grade, or is 11, without AOL. Now, the Troop may be onboard with this "Den Leader", so you may want to look at other Troops. Aquanaut is not a requirement for AOL, although it can be part of it. I think you need to keep your boy in Webelos as long as you can. Ask the current Bear den leader if your boy can be in his den next year.

Leave No Trace, basic camping safety, courtesy to other campers, etc. Parents often don't want to learn a new way to do things.
-
When I was a cub leader, one or two campouts was sufficient. The problem is that you can't train parents very well, like you can scouts. As a Boy Scout Leader, we try to do one campout a month. Usually end up doing 10 a year, with two Saturday outings.

when is the best time to switch packs
perdidochas replied to Wishfulmom's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Well, having been a Scouter in a Pack that didn't meet in a summer, and now in a Troop that does meet all summer, I agree with you. -
I will admit at the last extremely rainy camporee, I contemplated going to the SUV to sleep, so did the SM. That said, it was only a thought. I would never do something like that barring hypothermia.....

If you find a Pack you like that's active in the summer, change whenever is convenient. I don't know many Packs that meet regularly in the summer, so around here, I would recommend switching in September. Have you (or your husband) thought of stepping up to be Webelos Den Leader? (that is do you have interest and skills). That said, maybe this guy will be a better WDL. -
Should we force Scouts to listen to Old Goat music ?
perdidochas replied to King Ding Dong's topic in Council Relations
The Campmaster is out of line. I would have loved the music, and I think so would my sons (they've had to listen to it as long as they've been alive). That said, the call of whether or not to leave that area is up to their SPL and their SM. -
I pretty much agree with the above. I've met both, thankfully, more of the second group.
