  1. Yes, the Catholic Church prefers that parishes charter scout units.
  2. Way back when I was a WDL, the Pack had one year with maybe 10% of the boys with premade cars (including the overall winner). We then made a rule for next year that the PWD kit had to be used. Didn't have the problem ag ain.
  3. The above is why my two scouts' cars never won a heat in their combined 10 years of PWD competition. It's ok, because they still had fun.
  4. I'm a section day hiker. I hiked about two miles of the AT around Newfound Gap.
  5. Yes, the COR has to approve every member of the Pack/Troop from the Tiger cubs to the Cubmaster/Scoutmaster.
  6. We have a local scoutmaster who did the above on a two day canoeing trip--do all the requirements for Canoeing merit badge. Guess how many boys got the Canoeing merit badge from the trip? After the trip, the SM told his Scouts that they did all the requirements for the MB, but since none of them had asked for a blue card beforehand, nobody getst the MB.
  7. That's my one problem with my fellow Scout leaders. They love to give awards to each other and their sons. It gets old watching the same 5 or 6 people get award after award. This is even worse in the OA.
  8. The Scout's parents are allowed to write the religious reference. Per the Guide to Advancement:
  9. I believe the application says that the parents can do the religious letter. Also, there is no requirement that any reference letters be returned to the Council before an EBOR. The requirement is that the Scout provides the names and their contact information, not that the references have to actually be done. From the Guide to Advancement:
  10. My sister-in-law runs a fairly active outdoor girl scout troop. No, they aren't as hardcore into camping/outdoors as a typical Boy Scout Troop, but they camp, canoe, hike, etc.
  11. Well, the Scoutmaster can just refuse to recognize that any Scouts are worthy of OA. That is the one of the criteria for OA. That said, I agree the older Scouts should revolt.
  12. The problem is that we are accommodating a mental illness--a delusion that their gender is not the same as their biology. If we have mentally ill people that think they are George Washington or Superman, we don't allow them to walk around in those costumes. That said, if I were at a Camporee and met a TG "boy" I would be cordial, and treat her like a boy.
  13. Well, per the memo my council (Gulf Coast) sent out, this will still be an issue for COs/Troop committee to decide. If a TC doesn't want a particular person in the Troop, that person is not in the the Troop. Our troop has turned boys away because we could see they didn't fit in the Troop.
  14. The rare event, I presume, would be first period.
  15. An all boy unit has to have a male present on all campouts. A TG "boy" would not be required to have a female present, because then it would imply that she was a girl, and she does not want to be treated as one. My guess is that in the future, Boy Scout Troops will have to have coed leadership present on all campouts.
  16. Well, as a man, I would have no idea how to advise, etc., a girl having her first period. Since the pretense is that this girl is actually a "boy" there is no requirement for a female leader to be on the trip. I just think it would make for a lot of complications. The YPT implications are enormous.
  17. I've found that high school (and the fumes) gets in the way. Middle school sports and extracurriculars don't demand as much time as do high school sports and extracurriculars. that said, my oldest Eagled at 15 and was an active troop participant until he was 17. the problem is the age gap between him and the youngest scouts (who are barely 11). My youngest Eagled at the same age, but has hardly participated in Scouts since.
  18. I ;'ve never heard of it, or anything like it. A traditional American dessert would be apple pie, or for scouts, a dutch oven cobbler.
  19. Are the deadlines listed in the Merit badge as required? Are they listed on the Eagle application? It's not your business to do that schedule--it's the scout's business to complete the badges.
  20. IIRC, it was Annapolis and they were reinstating the teaching of celestial navigation.
  21. Depends on the region and rain status. Around here, we occasionally have burn bans in the fall (due to not enough rain), but we have enough that we have building fire without matches races at camporees. When my troop did this (were in charge of the competition), they had a wrinkle that the fire wasn't considered complete until a cup of water was brought to a rolling boil.
  22. My sons don't remember having a home phone number. That said, they both knew both my cell phone number and my wife's (so they met that requirement at least for two numbers)
