Judge rules US justice dept. can't weigh in on Scout lease case
pdunbar replied to Merlyn_LeRoy's topic in Issues & Politics
Trail Pounder Generally speaking pedophiles and homosexuals are two quite different individuals/. Pedophiles are sick people who have no place in society. Homosexuals are men the happen to be in love with other men. It is that simple!! They love men, not boys. And I would never have any problems with my boys being around gay individuals. -

Trail Pounder You have got to be kidding!! 80% are homosexual!! I don't think so!! Don't equate homos with pedophiles. My philosophy will always be sexuality has no place in scouting. What a simplier organization we would be. If you didn't like it go form your own organiztion. Which you might just tell me to do! But the fight for equality must come from within. Our time will come! -
Bob White What is the point of your last post....The unit committee is custodial in regards to troop funds, ultimately the troop committee is under control of the CO. Therefore the fund arte ultimately controlled by the CO. It may be interesting to note that in an ideal troop guidance is given from the onset by the CO, but in our case, our CO was merely on paper except for the CR that became involved with the troop. Unfortunately this CR was out of control, and after communicating with the CO executive and not having a positive response we were forcrd to move on. We will charter with the original founders of out troop. Just before I joined the troop 7 years ago, the committee elected to seek a new CO based on finacial reasons. ( Local paper mill would contribute only to certain CO's based on tax exempt status) We are very glad to being going back to the original CO. Today, we found out that all money and equipment will be turned over to the Nnew CO.

Many Small Troops vs. One Big Troop

green SM I agree with you in that some disorganization isn't the worse thing that could happen to a troop. Our troop continues to strive to be 100%boy led and with that one would expect some disorganization. I see the fun in our boys when allowed to lead the troop. Some troops that claim to be 100% boy run and never have problems are probably more adult run then they would allow you to believe. -
Many Small Troops vs. One Big Troop

Fat Old Guy I personaaly like a bigger unit of around 30 to 40 boys. Allows the boys more laedership opprtunities. If properly managed, a larger unit can offer more opportunities for the scouts. With that being said one has to be careful when combining troops, people have their own ideas on what scouting is all about and this can lead to frustation. Picture joining your troop with Bob White's. I would recommend proper training for all leaders. -
BOB WHite It had to do with scthe money in scout's accounts. You said that there are no0 such things in Official BSA policy. I agree with that statement, but it sounded like you were implying that they don't exist.
-
Bob White I was reading all of the posts and one of yours may be incorrect. Scout accounts although not part of official BSA policy are indeed a part of many units functioning operations. I would find it impossible to rsise funds for an activity such as National Jamboree or a Philmont outing without maintaining individual scout accounts.. And all of our Eagle Scout know quite about finances having completed the Personal Management Meirt Badge.
-
Fat Old Guy I agree totally with fulfilling all requirements. Bob WHite Could you clarify what you mean by saying case by case. There are bo modifications done on a specific merit badge? Also, could you comment all the reply dealing with official BSA policy. I do believe it is not correct. The CO has everything. BTW Carrying the boy was not a real option, I was being fictitious.
-
Bob White P.S. Our merit badge counselors in our troop take great pride in the level of quality and completeness in regards to merit badges. Having said that, I have had the pleasure of making freinds with 2 council executives that believe that merit badge counselors do haqve to use a little common sense. It is their opinion that many merit badges that have been earned in the summer camp environment fall short of the intended completeness. In the boy in our troop, we have substituted a alternate merit badge . He may earn the hiking merit badge if I can get into shape and carry him. As I recall there are no rules forbidden this in the requirement section.
-
Bob White National does not make modifications on merit badges in regards to specific individuals. Your answer speaks volumes.
-
Bob WHite I do know about the alternative merit badge policy. If Mr. Larsen was the advancement chair 5 years ago, I did talk to him. In my scouter's example, if he took twice as many steps as the average boy is that more or less?

Final Conclusions!! First thank you to all of you that sympathize with my problem and have offered me very good suggestions. I wish you part of our troop. I must confess that when I first came here I knew that according to BSA policy I knew where we stood. I just wanted to know some suggestions of dealing with the old CO. Old Bob White is correct in his thoughts and reasoning. Notice, I said he was correct! We had decided to leave our CO even if it meant losing everthing......which isn't true in itself......we are leaving with the most important thing.........all of the fine boys in our troop. Thank you again PS Not to be flippant but unless I was taught wrongly at Wood Badge, modifications can be made only on rank requirements, but merit badges are not modified. According to a phone conversation with National a few years ago, merit badge counselors have the final say. And BOB WHite would you give the boy the hiking merit badge.

Bob White Is not a verbal contract just as legal as a verbal one? Also, just out of curiosity, if you had a special needs scout and he was working on the hiking merit badge and fulfilled all requirements but on the hikes only did half the distance, knowing that for every oe step you took he had to take two, would you give him the merit badge? Everyone If the old chartered organization now has no charter, where do all the funds go?

I want to thank everyone for their reply. To the person who talked about what is really important about scouting.....I totally agree. While making a change in CO's we have maintained good scout spirit with the boys. In all honesty the boys have always been blessed with an above average program. To the person with the church analogy, I haven't looked into nor plan to look into the real legalities of ownership. Just because by scout rules the CO owns everything, I don't know if in the real world is it legal, considering we were forced to make this move when 2 leaders were going to be banned by the CO. One leader was charged with the crime of making too many Eagles. Scout organizations do make mistakes.....just look at the ban on gays.(this is a separate issue) We can and will move on. Our biggest problem with our past CO is the fact that our boys had money in individual accounts adminstered by the CO and they won't return it to the boys. As far as the rest of the money and gear, we can live without it. PS Last nights meeting...built tripods, hung water balloons from them, and then started fires to break balloons......awesome fun!!!!s

Recently all the members of our troop decided we could not tolerate the actions of our charter rep. He refused to add willing parents to the committtee that was in need of more help. The chartering organization also refused to help. In matter of fact that prohibited one parent from being a merit badge counselor, which thyr really are not allowed to do. We are in the process of being rechartered with a new sponser. No boys are left with the old sponser. Over the years all money and equipment has been raised by the parents and boys. The old chartering organization is refusing to give us the money and equipment. Any suggestion????!!
