I was never successful in training the parents, and it also annoyed me at having to thumb through 10 or 11 so books when it came down to the wire on awards day. With the help of some wonderful person(s) who took the time to post their tracking tools on the internet for free, I downloaded several excel spreadsheets that I used to track each scout's achievements in ONE place. The only downfall is that you need MicroSoft's Excel Software! Now, I just send a copy of each scout's record home with my monthly newsletter asking each parent to update their son's achievements. This saved me time from having to re-look over the same pages time and time again for 11 books! And the parents can take the time to update the book when they are updating their calendars with the info in my newsletter! ML, As long as your Cub Scout pack is requiring parents to be at the meetings, you might as well get involved. Sounds like someone needs to bring structure to the chaos. Granted, with a group of boys there will always be chaos .. some of it should be planned! Looking at your profile, it looks like you have been an active leader in the Boy Scouting program. If you aren't already familiar with the Cub Scout Program helps, go buy one! It has weekly activities planned for each den, you don't have to re-invent the wheel for every meeting. Enlist the other parents to conduct an activity or two at the meetings. I too was pressed for time being a mom of 3 little children, working fulltime, being on call after the work day, all with my husband working 3 p.m. to midnight. Having witnessed how much fun my son and his buddies had at each scout meeting that when my oldest son's den leader stepped down as his son had quit scouting, I just had to find the time so that they could continue on with the scouting program. There is a Den Chief Handbook. I would highly recommend both the den leader and den chief read thru the book. It will help the den leader figure out how to involve the den chief with their program. It will help the den chief gain a better understanding of their role. I have had two den chiefs working with me through the Bear program last year. This year, these same two den chiefs will be working with my Webelos Scouts this year. In past years, my den chiefs start out the den meeting with a physical game to wear off some of my Webelos Scout's energy. My den chiefs also act as a second hand to me in assisting the scouts in our activities, be it a craft project, wood project, etc. They have also led the scouts in earning several beltloops. This year, I have scouts brand new to scouting, so I have asked my den chief to help the new scouts with earning their BobCat badge. They will also work with all my Webelos Scouts in learning the Boy Scout Promise and Laws. As these Den Chiefs are now 14 and working on towards their Life Rank, my plans are to have them assist me in planning out a meeting once a month. We'll see how that goes..... Involving Den Chiefs has added more work for me in planning my program, but having the extra help and their youthful exuberance is well worth it. I am hoping that their presence encourages my Cub Scouts to advance onto Boy Scouting (where I am told the real fun begins!)
