  1. Oak Tree, how does BSA accept Buddhists and members of other religions who do not believe in a 'deity'?
  2. You know, there are times when someone is in my face enough that I am going to react badly no matter what they're saying. I understand the market necessity of those banners. But if something just keeps hammering at me, I'm going to start to wonder if maybe they're not convinced either. There's one up there right now...first time. I'm ok so far.
  3. AZMike, I think that was part of the quoted comment.
  4. According to this, he does believe in a 'higher power' but disagrees with the DRP. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/gay-boy-scout-denied-eagle-award-believes-god/story?id=17407747#.UG9c2q6Cmmk
  5. What's this about un-married men not being allowed in leadership positions?
  6. I have a man-cave. Does that count?
  7. Some of us like to 'do'. Some of us like to 'watch'.
  8. Did you miss this part, "...and does not meet Scoutings membership standard on sexual orientation."?
  9. Yes Lisa, I was wondering the same thing. But if it WAS some SM interpreting things his own way, BSA evidently took the opportunity to endorse that interpretation. I thought it was noteworthy because it is an example of BSA shutting a boy, not an adult, out of membership.
  10. I work with a wide variety of these things and they are in use on a daily basis. The expense is considerable. Beyond the purchase price, if you have to replace a bulb, that cost is also surprisingly high. And if you're only going to use it once a week or once a month, I couldn't justify the investment at all. Isn't there some other way to have an engaging, fun meeting?
  11. Here we go again: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/04/14224160-almost-eagle-scout-denied-award-because-he-is-gay?lite
  12. "Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell you brother, you can't have one without the other." I guess it depends on what you think 'modern' means as well.
  13. Eagledad, your daughter's boyfriend laughs....or else....
  14. Well, I don't want to comment on 'mentally awake' because I have no way to judge, but Moosetracker, I think you're being a little unfair in your conclusions. First, there's no way to know for sure who is and who isn't a Republican in these threads, unless they state their status openly. Second, I'm fairly certain that almost all of us in these forums are honorable people regardless of political views. We just disagree and sometimes we say intemperate things (and I know I'm as guilty of this as the next person). So I'm not speaking as a moderator here but rather as a friend, I hope everyone can keep some perspective on these things and try to 'lighten up' a little.
  15. Lisa, just to clarify, I didn't choose GW...but I believed him once he was elected - big mistake...that's the nature of getting hoodwinked in that case. I should have been more suspicious after his campaign's shameful actions in SC during the primaries. But hoodwinked I was. I'm guilty of that. You know, I'm thinking back to someone I also liked back then: Shirley Chisolm. She had incredible spirit and a direct manner I liked a lot. I almost voted for her.
  16. WAKWIB, I only got a few responses, maybe 50% (depending on whether you use the council list or the REAL list ) A few parents approached me in the parking lot after a meeting and noted their concern but indicated that as long as they had confidence in the unit leadership and the program that the boys were in, they'd ignore the policy to one degree or another. One parent responded fairly negatively and I had to talk her out of pulling out. Several others indicated that they already knew about the policy before they joined and had already made their decision to 'hold their noses' as long as this issue never erupted for this unit. They did indicate that three families (friends of theirs) who had originally considered scouting, had decided not to join in the first place. I understand that this could merely be a convenient excuse for something they had planned anyway. There was genuine surprise from some of the rest who responded, and concern, but no one indicted their intention to leave because of the policy. If they ever do leave, I seriously doubt they'll state this policy as a reason. The gay adults are quite aware of the policy but they already understand the 'lay of the land' in all this. Their decisions are based on other things. They know that neither the CO nor the leadership considers that there is a responsibility to act as 'sexual orientation police' so I think they feel comfortable in the unit as it is. Pretty much the way BSA has approached it as well. The CO is a 'welcoming' group so if there is any kind of big impact from this policy it will come from that level. But so far, no one has made an issue of it so I think the policy is like the 'elephant in the room'. It's there, it's wrong, it's unpleasant or hurtful, but it won't go away, so we'll just try to ignore it.
  17. Lisa, for some reason I just seem to be a sucker for these guys. Maybe I'll just roll a die. WAKWIB, I do have an answer for you. I'll respond to the other thread. I thought I did that already. Oh well....
  18. Wow, Lisa, I'm impressed. No, I'm envious. That's gotta be some kind of record. But....I'll trump all that with a single act. I voted for Richard Nixon. So THERE!
  19. We don't have a single one. I have no idea why a home-schooled boy should be any different from any other boy. We HAVE had one or two who had unrealistic expectations based on their pampered life at home. But they weren't home schooled. Even though I am opposed to home schooling, I still wouldn't make this kind of association, much less imply that home schooling is the cause. I think it can happen in any educational environment and depends mostly on life at home.
  20. It might have been an oversight but you can include me as being in favor of local option as well. Edit: I'm not sure about that 'gay agenda' thing either. Me, I'm mostly about 'fairness' as an agenda.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
  21. Heh, heh, I start my lectures on alternative fuels with photos of a church-sponsored book-burning of Harry Potter books. "The congregation of the Christ Community Church in Alamogordo in southern New Mexico heard an anti-Harry Potter sermon in which Pastor Jack Brock claimed the character taught children to take up wizardry." "Behind that innocent face is the power of satanic darkness," he said. "Harry Potter is the devil and he is destroying people." Now if the Presbyterians had done fun things like that when I was growing up, it might have 'stuck' with me. Thinking.......naaahh!
  22. Yep, you did a nice job, Beavah, my compliments. My comment, as you probably recognized, was a reference to the application of that quote to 'evolution'.
