For some reason this comment didn't show up in the right place before - maybe a bug? Anyway, Tampa Turtle, around here the model I would use to answer your question is the churches (which would be the CO in some cases). They are loosely known as 'community' churches (as opposed to one conventional flavor or another) or, if they ARE a conventional flavor, they're called 'welcoming congregations'. Both of these designations seem to be code for churches which truly welcome all people including those who are openly gay. So perhaps the modifiers, 'community' or 'welcoming' might be attached to the unit.

Connecting the Dots: Guns, Gays and Obamacare

Oh Sepulchre!!! That 'rapture' thing again. Can't you guys finally accept that it already happened back in 1996? We are all, all of us, left behind. Get over it and try to get along! -
I have a hunch that the mod functions are not quite ready for prime time. Either that or else my account has more problems.
-
I'm not sure what this new site will allow moderators to do...or how to do it. I'm assuming the handshake hasn't changed. Edit: heck, I can't even make a smiley.....

Hi Folks, There are two things happening here. First, yes, the forums have changed and there is definitely a learning curve. Moreover, (this is the other thing) I think Terry and the other web gurus are still working out 'bugs'. Just be patient and things will smooth out....at the same time that those of us who are still hiking up the learning curve, learn the system. It looks like a much more powerful site with many more capabilities. I'm looking forward to all of it. Edit: Oooooo, Nike, nice avatar!

I don't much like the term itself, mainly because of its widespread improper use. It really has less meaning because of that. I'm going to try to post your link again just to experiment a little with this new website: http://jpfo.org/articles-assd03/heller-gun-control-debate.htm I'm still working on the learning curve here. Edit: OK, I see I still have some more of that learning curve ahead of me. FYI, In about 1965 or thereabouts, I purchased a shotgun from Montgomery Ward through mail order. I also did not automatically get the urge to kill people. (wild game was another matter) But as much as I'd still like to have that convenience, I think things have changed a lot in the last 50 years. The dialogue, I think, should be on what the problems really are and what are realistic solutions? I'm not seeing much of that.

National looking at letting homosexuals in the BSA

I guess we can just pick a random thread on this topic now, they're so mixed up...or maybe it's me. Anyway, I'm still trying to understand the reaction in which someone decides to leave scouting, not because their CO has lost its ability to discriminate, but because OTHERS have gained the freedom to choose NOT to discriminate. I just don't get it. Why does one person NOT want another to have the same freedom that THEY have? -
Happens down here all the time. And where did that guy in Ohio get those guns to sell with no BGC? JoeBob should know, he's also in the South.

Tampa Turtle, I also add that you need to be really careful what you do with your left (devil's) hand if you're in parts of the Middle East. And in the desert, the left hand is the correct one...oh yeah. Merlyn, what was it that Mark Twain wrote about statistics? -
Calico, you take me too seriously. I was just playing around, turning the tables on those who claim there is no 'right to privacy' in the Bill of Rights. You know...those pesky activist court interpretations. Edit: Oops, I guess jblake47 and I were typing at the same time. So about all that encroaching...who is going to be doing it? I don't understand the problem, I guess.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

Refresh my memory: where does the word 'association' occur in the Bill of Rights? I'm not saying there ISN'T such a right, I'm just trying to find those words. Were you trying to answer my previous question in all that?(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

OK, I'm on a quest. One of these threads, I'm eventually going to get an answer. I can be very persistent: I guess we can just pick a random thread on this topic now, they're so mixed up...or maybe it's me. Anyway, I'm still trying to understand the reaction in which someone decides to leave scouting, not because their CO has lost its ability to discriminate, but because OTHERS have gained the freedom to choose NOT to discriminate. OK, on the invitation to leave stuff: I would hate to try to count all the times that I've been invited by other members in these forums to leave scouting and start my own club, just because I voiced an opinion they disagreed with. And not only me but plenty of others who voiced similar opinions. In at least one case I was essentially told I would go to hell. (that one, at least, might be correct, who knows?) So enough with the angst about being "shown the curb" as one member once put it to me, that stuff comes from all sides and we just need to shrug it off. Sticks and stones, you know....

No response in another thread. I'll try it here: I guess we can just pick a random thread on this topic now, they're so mixed up...or maybe it's me. And WHAT, I may ask, is WRONG with being left-handed? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handedness_of_Presidents_of_the_United_States -
Eaglemom2b, for a long time now I've denied the existence of hell. But I'm beginning to have doubts reading your list of things Eagles are doing. Seriously, if all that stuff is happening around your area I have to wonder that you can eek out a life at all. To help balance things, I can point you to Eagles who complete really demanding college degrees, who go on to become doctors or (horrors!) attorneys, or (even worse) scientists like me. You probably will even find Eagles devoted to public service or missionary work. I try to remind the Eagles I assist on their path, that Eagle is a personal accomplishment, not a club. Every Eagle is unique and the award itself is almost irrelevant, compared with the sense of duty and drive and initiative and finally, accomplishment...that the boy accumulates or develops along that path. Every Eagle is different and some realize the full benefit of the experience for the rest of their lives. For others, it is merely an award given for having checked off the proper boxes on a form. But no individual should feel that they are necessarily associated with the success or failure of other individuals who happen to have the same award. The 'award' is an outward thing viewed superficially by other people. The 'reward' is an inner thing that does not depend on outward appearances.

"probably twice my age" greater than 3X is more like it. You'll blink your eyes a few times and you'll be there too. Or as the cartoon says, "Zero to 60 in what seems like 6 seconds flat" Have a nice day.

Beavah, what about the point he makes about the 'core' mission being a major point in the Supreme Court case and that this change (if it occurs) will weaken that court decision? What do you think about that claim?
-
Sorry, as you well know, sometimes I have to ask to be sure. I just heard that the NRA has reversed itself and now opposes universal background checks. LaPierre said something along the lines of, 'because criminals won't go through the background checks'. Huh? Is the guy really that stupid?
-
Acco40, I just noted the use of the term 'impressed'. Which sense were you using? The sense in which it essentially means 'drafted' or forced into service? Or the sense in which it means that it made an impression (perhaps negatively)?
-
I think Sentinel947 has it right. That Supreme Court decision cuts both ways. If a private club can discriminate, then that's that. I don't see this as a problem. As a matter of fact, it brings membership to the marketplace. People will be free to choose membership in units that reflect their views. So let's see, greater freedom, more choices....What IS the problem?
-
Tampa Turtle, heh, heh, I sleep alone mostly because I get kicked out. No one seems to like my singing or when I'm humming a tune.
-
Someone please explain how a decision to stop discriminating (local option) amounts to discrimination, if 'local option' means that units can still discriminate if they want to? How is it that greater local freedom is somehow 'wrong' or 'bad'? MomToEli, As I understand it, the policy shift to local option doesn't necessarily change 'standards' if the local CO wants to maintain the status quo. The standards remain in your control. What is wrong with that?(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
