  1. It's just a bit less than 160F on Everest. The point is...at altitudes we're camping at, simply boiling is sufficient. The pressure cooking thing is mostly good if you want to cook quickly. KDD, I have watched enough non-stick surfaces incinerated during scout cooking to understand that compared to some of those attempts, that hockey puck would be a delicacy, lol. They learn by doing. And occasionally being a little hungrier than they had planned...incentive to get it right.
  2. KDD, what is the predicted boiling temperature for water on, say, Mt. Everest...call it 29,000 ft? Yeah, I know that's a bit less than Everest really is, but humor me...the troop is unlikely camp there anyway. Also, I'm asking about human pathogens, not bacteria in general.
  3. I'm curious. Are there any browsers that are NOT free?
  4. I been Norman Mailered, Maxwell Taylored I been John O’Hara’d, McNamara’d I been Rolling Stoned and Beatled till I’m blind I been Ayn Randed, nearly branded Communist, ‘cause I’m left-handed That’s the hand I use, well never mind!
  5. I have to tell you, when I read the title the first time, I was wondering how much food you ate to achieve that goal. Must be time for lunch.
  6. OK, just for fun....what temperature is necessary to eliminate human pathogens? (Hint: It isn't as hot as you might think) And then, at what altitude does that temperature equal the boiling temperature? (Hint, it's a really tall mountain)
  7. Nope, I did some work on its pollution. Nasty. It wasn't the worst job I ever had to do but it was in the top 10. The worst was on Laguna San Jose in Puerto Rico. I hate to imagine what could top that.
  8. Let's see... There once was a camp on Nantucket, ....probably should stop there, I guess. I agree. 3.5 M sounds like someone is getting a sweet deal. Wonder what the connections are? Here's the location on GE: 41°15'24.01" N 70°05'00.14" W
  9. Personally, I'd opt for Cinci. The food is great, decent baseball team. As for the hike, I'd find a way to walk along the river. Is there a rails-to-trails hike around there somewhere? After experiencing the ship channel, I admit I'm prejudiced against Houston.
  10. OMG, I thought you were joking about the bunks and food and all......Egad! Edit: Thinking....Wow! You have caves in Indiana! When we did the wild cave thing, we dragged duffel bags behind us and slept in mud. No food. Pee bottles, held all else. Quite a contrast.
  11. KDD, could you please reveal the state that this cave is in? Just curious.
  12. Heh, heh, no...I intend to be the one still standing. The machete would violate one, maybe two, of my personal rules of conduct.
  13. The last post on this topic was on 24 July before Danbrew decided to start it up again on 9 August....and I'm the one throwing rocks at a hornet's nest? OK, if that's the level of judgment you exercise, so be it. Zimmerman did get away with it. I don't know how anyone could interpret that 'found not guilty' verdict any other way. He killed an unarmed person. He claimed self defense and didn't receive any punishment. Seems clear enough. If you think this is stirring something up, think of it instead in these terms....I'm delighted that this precedent opens an opportunity for me that I didn't realize I had before Zimmerman clarified things. This fall, when that guy who does this every fall trespasses on my property hunting something or other, I can at last confront him while carrying my concealed weapon so he won't know what's about to happen. Then I can surprise him and blow him away, and then claim self defense and get away with it. It will be even clearer in my case because he will actually be armed and dangerous. And afterwards, I expect the same level of excuse for me that some of us have applied to Zimmerman. It's only fair.
  14. OK, I've done a quick inventory. I have a lot of maps from Texas, Florida, Arizona, California. I have a few from Washington, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada, Massachusetts, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, and New York. Also I have a few from Indiana, only a couple from Ohio. small number from Illinois and Wisconsin. Scattered ones from Montana, New Mexico...just a few from Virginia and West Virginia, Mississippi, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota. For some reason, there are also a decent number from Hawaii and Puerto Rico, in case anyone is interested. Just a couple from Alaska and Missouri. None from the Dakotas, Wyoming, Maine, South Carolina...don't know why. These maps are about 50 or more years old and came from discards from a well-known university. I've already put some aside for the boys in this unit so we're good. I'd like to make the rest available to anyone who thinks they might be useful...before they get recycled. While going through them, I did come up with a novel solution to the possibility that we are going to have a 51st state - Puerto Rico. In that case, in order to keep the flag tidy (and avoid having to change it) we should divide Rhode Island between Connecticut and Massachusetts and basically make it go away. Just a suggestion. Who'd miss it? Of course that might also apply to Alabama or Mississippi, lol. So here's the deal. Now you know where they're from. If anyone would like some of these so the boys can practice map reading or orientation, let me know. I already have a few who have asked - sorry about the absence of Missouri maps, BTW. My email address for this is: packsaddle@lycos.com Email me and I'll let you know how many I have and the estimated cost of postage.
  15. Eagledad, what do you mean by 'do a copy'? If you're just trying to copy text, that is working fine for me. It could be a problem with your browser, I'm using Firefox. Or else I may be misinterpreting the problem.
  16. Nope, not bat. That is beginning to sound more and more like a hotel to me.....
  17. We have done the cave overnight thing in the past. The 'sanitary' issues are troubling enough to the boys and the leaders that we now opt to do the caving thing and then camp outside the cave in tents. Seems to remove all the ambiguity as well as the 'sanitary' concerns. The food is better too.
  18. I'd like to see the adult leaders qualify. Seems fair to me.
  19. It IS over. Zimmerman got away with it. Why are you still trying to justify something that you acknowledge is "done with"?
  20. True, and you don't really even need to be in the South to do that. Just in the sun during summer. It works on pets as well. And although it isn't the same situation this reminds me of my favorite Car Talk episode of all time, the transcript is here: http://www.alaska.net/~jgerster/max.html enjoy
  21. Thanks, that explains it. FWIW, this one won't get burned.
  22. Just sat next to the 'bedbug' entomologist on Friday. Evidently we have a gracious plenty of specimens already so he's not excited about getting more...you're off the hook. But the offer of the maps is still open to anyone interested. I'm still scaring up some mailing tubes for those who've responded already. Incidentally, I asked about infestations on campus and it seems we're still 'bug free' so far. Not true, though, for off-campus apartments. It's just a matter of time. The great thing about this is I can go into certain social circles and talk about this and squeamish persons 'feel' them crawling around for hours afterwards....it's the simple pleasures that are best.
  23. Welcome back, Eamonn! Where have you been all this time? Edit: BTW, what is a 'Burner' email?
  24. 5th wheel riders: illegal in SC, GA, FL, lots of others. Same for other trailers. Some states do allow riders in 5th wheel but like 5 years says below, it's a bad idea and even when it's legal it usually comes with restrictions.
  25. Just a little dark humor there.....
