New badges? What would you like to see?
packsaddle replied to LauraT7's topic in Advancement Resources
PB&J? Bite your tongue! OK, I know it's a different topic. I made my own sleeping bag from scratch as a teen. {Scratch is a specialty fabric, in my case nylon taffeta} Full length zipper, baffles, the works. Used purchased goose down, though. After that I hacked together a set of bicycle bags. Something like these would be more than adequate to qualify a boy for sewing, I think. Better than 100 hours of meticulous labor. However, I agree that Cooking should be eagle required. And done right...PB&J verboten! -
Another confession, I have hundreds of disks too - but of VINYL. Plus a few CDs.

Uuuugh, Ed? I'd rather not think about that. mk9750, I think I have a solution for your problem with gospel. Pretend it's opera in another language and just enjoy the good music.

KWC57, I owe it all to cuisine...nearly any one you can name. -
Rooster, 10-4 on those Supremes! Did you say that Rap has a message? Guess I missed something, NOT! Sorry, I don't consider it to be music either. Richard Strauss would agree. Anyone like Tom Jones?

Food! The key to success is FOOD! How to plan and prepare it. And then...the eating! -
William Shatner? I had no idea. Excellent, this could exceed even my expectations. Muuuhahahaha!
-
Dsteele, take a few moments and do a Google search on Merlyn LeRoy.

No Ricky, for sure. Another of my favorite torture songs: "...someone left the cake out in the rain, I don't think that I can take it, for it took so long to bake it, and I'll never have that recipe again, ooohhh noooooo!" Diabolical! I'll enjoy the rest of this day thinking of how many of you won't be able to get that one out of your minds.

OK, I think I get it now. We're not talkin' Ozzy and Harriet are we?

1st & last Eagle-Required Badges?

Last, Personal Management or Personal Fitness (Family Life close). First, Swimming (First Aid close). KWC57, Martin Mull says pizza was invented in Oklahoma, that true? -

OGE, good idea. But I see it as a revamp of Pioneering MB. The idea should get some serious attention. Personally, and unless people are cheating, I see Env. Sci. as too hard and in need of some modification. Oops, forgot the original question. I would suggest Orienteering as a substitute. There is a hefty knowledge/skill level required as well as a physical requirement that he should be able to do on a golf course or similar terrain. I also sympathize with the note on martial arts but no need to make a big deal. Without more knowledge of the nature of his limitation it is hard to judge.(This message has been edited by packsaddle) -
I saw the humor in it at least.

Getting scouts to be quiet at night
packsaddle replied to Ryon_Nayr@email.com's topic in The Patrol Method
Uh-oh, did I miss a smudge? I've also been known to emit muffled peeping noises as I try not to laugh at all the other sounds. -
And I might add...observed correctly using a good microscope, pond 'sludge' is quite fascinating. Harrumph!

As Bob Dole would say, "down, boy!" Merlyn's motives are not relevant as far as I'm concerned. If our ideas can stand critical scrutiny, they are stronger for it. If we avoid or reject such scrutiny, then we can't really know the strength of those ideas. And if some of our ideas are weak, critical examination is the best way to detect and then avoid or reject them.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

Getting scouts to be quiet at night
packsaddle replied to Ryon_Nayr@email.com's topic in The Patrol Method
I have enjoyed these responses. It seems that for our troop, getting to sleep quickly correlates to how well fed they are and even better if fed later. I think good food goes a long way toward solving most problems. My biggest problem is the other leaders. Last outing the one with the sleep apnia machine was making Darth Vader sounds and the other one was sawing redwoods. Sheesh! -
Holy Toledo, did I read 'Annette Funicello'? "Now it's time to say goodbye to all our company, M-I-C, see you soon, K-E-Y, why, because we like you. M-O-U-S-E." And, no lie, I make it sound just like the original. Boy how they move out of their sleeping bags to avoid a repeat. That's were the C&W nasal twang really helps.

OK, even more overlap with Ed, and I missed a good bit of overlap with Bob White (in my region "we play both kinds of music - country AND western").
-
OK, that's good. Do we list the non-scouts on the tour permit? The reason I ask is that sometimes we need the church youth that are not in Boy Scouts in order to attain critical mass for certain outings (where a group rate, for example, requires a minimum number). The non-scouts are mostly girls.
-
Unlike a honeybee, a wasp can inflict multiple stings. Once was memorable enough for me. FYI it flew back to the ceiling. I now examine church ceilings when I enter.
-
If a scout troop and a non-scout youth group combine for a common trip, how do we separate these issues?
-
Or we could start a thread on allergies. Using set theory for music preference, I am with: OGE, one hour, red feather, rooster, with a little overlap on Ed. Anyone mention Pat Boone or Petula Clark? Favorite classical, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Chopin, Mahler, Del Tredici, Debussy, Ravel, Wagner, lots of others. I punish my scouts by singing oldie goldies to them. Most recent comment, "I just can't get that song out of my head, and it's not even a good one!" Ahhhh, simple pleasures. Dsteele, am I in violation of youth protection rules? Music abuse, I suppose...especially with me singing it.
-
Ed, I was tired and we were in the midst of a 20-minute prayer...I began staring at the ceiling high above. A wasp sat on a distant beam. Just as I was about to doze, it flew down and stung me on the nose. Merlyn is kind of like that. At the moment, I didn't much enjoy it but in retrospect, I can appreciate the event. Even if his motives are as you say, I would rather have them aired for examination than push him into the corner. I think it makes all of us better. And remember his alter ego, Zorn, or whoever, at least Merlyn seems sincere.

10-4 on the info, dsteele. I am just a hack (not hacker) with computers and I am amazed at how much of our personal info is freely available out there. Five minutes of looking will be a sobering experience. I'll continue to delude myself with anonymity.
