  1. I want to add a quick side note that I fully endorse the use of songs from Gilbert and Sullivan in these threads. Especially from my favorite, 'The Mikado'. So I have to ask, at risk of a hijack, TAHAWK, what part do you like to sing? While I enjoy the entire thing, I do some parts better than others. My object all sublime, I shall achieve in time - To let the punishment fit the crime, the punishment fit the crime, And make each prisoner pent, unwillingly represent - a source of innocent merriment..of innocent merriment.
  2. I'm very troubled if, somehow, he is trying to prevent his scouts from speaking out. The first amendment does not have an age limit as far as i know. We can weigh the words of children any way we choose, like we do each other, but they have a right to express themselves. I agree with duckfoot: if I was one of the parents I'd demand to meet with the CPB representatives. Something is not right in Iowa...indeed.
  3. We used to refer to it as 'ditch weed', lol. As far as quality goes, it was grown for rope and you might as well just smoke a hemp rope. No one in their right mind would cultivate that stuff for its 'mind adjustment' qualities. But then, being in right mind isn't exactly the goal I suppose.
  4. Do it however you need to but show the SM the door. It will be the best thing for everyone. Be the bad guy if necessary. I've performed similar service before (calling the cops on drunk friends who would not give up their car keys).. Better to lose a friend than to lose a life. In this case there are so many reasons to get him out as SM, any of them should be sufficient.
  5. Heh, heh, one of them really was, "We're in Greece on our way to a Mediterranean cruise. Tough Luck." I will never forget the look of shock on his face...priceless. When the week was over, grandma picked him up. He didn't look happy...I think she was a cheek pincher, lol. No lie, he had a smudge of dirt on his face so she licked a napkin and wiped him off. He was ready to crawl back into the tent to get away from that.
  6. We're fairly loyal to the council camp but we also have a second week at a non-scout-camp location that varies according to the PLC decisions.
  7. This has been a great discussion of how to handle summer camp issues, some of them. I have mostly encountered scouts who pretended to be homesick in order to get out of staying. Fortunately the parent(s) were already prepared to deal with this and a quick phone conversation with their sons convinced them to stick it out.
  8. RememberSchiff, you must keep in mind that this highly trained CPB agent could have been reacting with cat-like reflexes to cleverly-disguised Iowa terror cells (several of them) who in a monumentally-clever misdirect, completely bypassed all the oil and gas infrastructure being developed in North Dakota and instead brazenly stole past sleepy Canadian agents into Canada so they could drive around a thousand miles to a remote Alaska border crossing and slip undetected into Alaska so they could drive maybe another thousand miles to blow up "a certain famous pipeling running through the state above ground most of the way from the North Slope, or maybe one of the shipping ports for that particular product." Don't snort coffee out your nose...this really could have been what happened. FYI, anyone who wants to photograph the checkpoints that CPB agents set up away from the actual border and within that 100 mile (as the crow flies) region, feel free to do it. The CPB has this happen so often now that about the only thing they do about it is grab their own cameras to film the people taking pictures. It's really kind of comical when you think about it....those poor CPB agents reduced to 'dueling cameras'. You can find this stuff all over YouTube.
  9. Welcome to the forums, Mr. D. I have to tell you I had a bit of deja vu at first and almost rewrote my suggestion to the question in the original post until I realized it was almost 10 years old, lol, and found my response on page 1. It was nice to see some old names that we rarely read anymore. Thanks for the suggestion. Does anyone know if all the patches are converted to 'iron on' as one post predicted? If so, our shop must still have the old ones.
  10. A role model for adults as well. There are plenty of good LEOs out there, mostly underpaid and under-appreciated. Nice to see one recognized for it, thanks.
  11. Krispy Kreme doughnuts......sinfully good...that would be my choice.
  12. I would rely on a combination of advice from both Davy Crockett and Perry Mason. Make sure you're right then go ahead...and simply tell the truth.
  13. I agree with Fred on this. By this time the patterns are set fairly strongly and will be difficult to break. Time for him to move on if he can't shape up immediately.
  14. Our pack (since before I became CM) did this by families. All of our campouts were family campouts except for the overnighter or two when webelos were invited to 'join' a boy scout camporee (on those occasions the den cooked). The families seemed to like it this way and if anyone was 'challenged' the CM was prepared to demonstrate and teach them some new skills. I really like the cub scouts. They're the best of all.
  15. A parent is always 'in charge' of their child and yes they may go with their son. Qwazse is right about this. Tigers are supposed to be accompanied by their parent or guardian. But a parent always has the ultimate authority over their own child.
  16. Have you tried explaining to them the nature of 'scout spirit' and why doing this good turn is in the best interest of both units? I guess I'm asking if the CO is really this petty'?
  17. I've never had a problem with the return/paragraph function. Try it again with an edit. BTW, welcome to the forums!
  18. OK, I'm now going to put on the Ronald Reagan Halloween mask that I use to scare hell out of Unitarians...and his voice of course, "There you go again, NJ", heh, heh, talking about FACTS of all things. Why would we let something like that get in the way of some great fun? Calico no new parameters, as you noted, if you pull the weapon you should be ready to fire. Based on the numerous instances of what I've observed with TSA, it makes perfect sense, lol. I completely understand. This has almost nothing to do with good sense, national security, or even border security. It might be about nothing more than showing hard at some location where almost nothing ever happens and bored, thoughtless persons need to feel important. It makes perfect sense. Chalk one up for good ol' Barney. Or it might be exactly the way they were trained to respond...by the book. As if there's a difference. This is, in fact, one good reason to have a smart phone. By the time they object to the video, it will already be posted on the internet. Edit: Interesting: The Washington Post (that liberal rag) reports that the BP has reviewed videos of the incident and claims there is no evidence that an officer unholstered his weapon. Someone is lying. Wonder who it is?
  19. So, now that you've pointed the gun at his head, would you really have "been prepared" to pull the trigger? Clearly,as you say, this just might have been a cleverly-disguised terror cell of youthful suicide bombers about to attack...what was the target again?... Alaska....you know...that really well-known and popular target for terrorism. Caribou and moose quiver with fear every day. And lemmings, can't forget those. Incidentally, FYI: https://www.aclu.org/free-speech/know-your-rights-photographers It was interesting, that part about police being guilty of evidence tampering if they delete a photo. As far as the word, 'boy' goes, I guess you need to take that one up with the people in Irving, TX.
  20. OK, to alleviate Peregrinator of some of his discomfort, lol, I'll note that I haven't actually done anything more than to ask for an explanation. I'm willing to be persuaded, if someone can help out, that it was right and proper to aim that gun at a boy scout. It's just possible that this action WAS in fact in the vital interest of our national security, or was necessary to protect the integrity of our borders from illegal entry by non-citizens. Persuade me.
  21. Please, anyone who sees how the border agents were right in their actions, please explain how if you were in their shoes, you would have justified aiming your loaded gun at a boy's head. Please explain how you would feel that this is the proper action and would personally have done the same thing had you been there.
  22. Heh, heh, : http://www.economist.com/printedition/covers/2013-01-10/ap-e-eu-la-me-na-uk and then there's this: http://www.economist.com/news/asia/21607837-fixing-dreadful-sanitation-india-requires-not-just-building-lavatories-also-changing For a little perspective: It could be worse. I quote from 'The Ghost Map', by Steven Johnson. In Victorian England there were raging academic debates about all sorts of heady issues such as the humane industrialization of society, collective bargaining, the free market economy. "But there was another debate that ran alongside those more austere themes, one that has not received as much attention in the seminar rooms or the biographies. It's true enough that the Victorians were grappling with heady issues like utilitarianism and class consciousness. But the finest minds of the era were also devoted to an equally pressing question: What are we going to do with all of this shit?" Read this book. It will amaze you that people actually survived these conditions. It's a great read for the summer.
  23. I wish I could say all this discussion has given me some reason for optimism. I can't. After reading all this, I'm ready to strap on the backpack and leave all this behind for a while. The one common thread I detect in all this seems to be (as opposed to the sex-obsession in I&P) a preoccupation with human waste. I guess when we cram this many people into one place, no matter what the facilities, this is 'naturally' going to occupy our immediate thoughts...probably sooner than later, lol. Time to hit the trail...a remote, lonely one.
