Reminder: Only One Screen Name Allowed
packsaddle replied to SCOUTER-Terry's topic in Forum Support & Announcements
Deceit is the only motive I can think of for posting under more than one screen name. Am I missing any other reasons? -
What you became now your grown up?

Chippewa29, when you discover the secrets to financial security, you are (ahem) going to share them...aren't you? -
Dyslexic fingers here. AnneinMpls, Was there more to their response than what you posted? I too recognize those words as code for, "You're too old." Those aren't the only ones like it either. And I have heard similar lines. My response is to file it for later and get on with things. I directly address the situation by never doing this to another person when I am selecting candidates.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

Our camp started with the wrist bands. Felt like I was back in the hospital. I guess our camp is sort of in-between regarding latrines. There are a few central shower facilities with hot water for a short while. And at some of the remote camp sites there are pit latrines that must date back for decades. But it is all moot as the sanitation people are requiring the camp to completely refit to meet codes. Expensive, but a good thing to do.

I think I understand the situation. I think a good internal frame pack that can adjust to individual proportions will do what you need. I sometimes take one on travel (in case I can take the weekend to do some solo stuff). External frames are good but the frames don't travel well as they tend to catch and hang on their surroundings. I do advise you to seriously consider the fit, though. Try it at the showroom. Put some weight in it. See if someone will help you adjust it specifically for you. And if it feels right, buy it. But if there is ANY little thing not quite right, pass. There to just too many options and one of them will likely be nearly perfect. Oh yeah, enjoy the shopping.

radio static, "Is that you, Boynton (OGE)?" I would note, however, that Paul was the Pee Wee guy. I never knew who played Jumbi but there were several other prominent television actors and actresses who appeared there from time to time. Mekalekahi, mekahinyho. Let the cartoon begin!

What's your earliest Scouting memory?
packsaddle replied to dsteele's topic in Open Discussion - Program
Joined cubs about 10 years earlier, NJ. There were still Lions but I never made it past that. I still have my old cub scout uniform. I remember doing standing backflips with the other boys in the front yard of the den mother. She nearly fainted. One our pack meetings had some Boy Scouts and the meeting hall had all their awards and stored equipment. That did it for me. -
The doors to the cabinet inside the playhouse open and Jumbi says, "Science, did someone say 'science'?" Regressing to elementary school-level education: science can't prove anything about religion one way or the other. Science simply can't address the supernatural. Science neither confirms nor disproves matters of faith. Period. Bob White, you have taken me to task in the past for attempting to speak for you. I would like you to let NJ (for that matter, the rest of us) to speak for himself (ourselves). You obviously have poor comprehension of his (and our) ideas and therefore you probably will be in error when you pretend to inform us of his (our) thoughts and intent. Thanks. boleta, thanks for returning us to the topic. Good luck at staying there. Sorry for the interruption. The doors to the cabinet close, "Long live Jumbi."

If you haven't already, please put me on your ignore list.

Why do you request this? My answer: No way! I am open to read everyone. -
boleta, this comes from my colleague who is also the district commissioner or committee chair (I'm not sure about his position right now). He has been completely frustrated that his predecessors and their assistants have been interested only in the title, not the service, a tradition that he has been unable to break. And that this status seems to have been cultivated by the pros (his conclusion, not mine). My friend is now looking forward to devoting his time to his unit and his son, repeating the road I took. My response: who cares? The unit is strong and we'll continue to do fine. I tried to volunteer to help those guys and all I got was a view of their backs. Not a problem at all. I'll take the boys any day.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

boleta, I fell for anatomy too. I ended up marrying her. This is my non-PC 4th of July contribution. Sometimes it's just too much fun to be denied. -
jkhny, By now you may be experiencing a splendid example of 'deja vu all over again'. Since no other person has mentioned it, Welcome to the Forums. Here you will find a microcosm that is more or less representative of the volunteer side of the program, both good and bad. For reasons I don't understand, very few scouting professionals respond to the issues aired in these forums. Some of the more vocal respondents have already made their opening volleys. I find it useful to examine the date they registered and compare it to the number of postings. Get the point? As for myself, I have noticed some of the same things you have mentioned although I believe our council would fare better in your judgment. I took Fuzzy Bear's advice long before he gave it here and devote my time and resources to the boys. I have learned that by keeping the troop strong, nothing that happens in the district or council beyond can kill us. We understand the score and self-reliance makes us strong. We have survived nicely for more than 50 years and will continue to do so...and it will be because of the dedication of the volunteers and recognition of that fact by the community and parents. I sympathize with your frustration. But know that there is much good to be done by working with the boys. Watch their faces. Have fun. Do the right thing.

NJ (and anyone else in particular?), I thought I'd take a little time away from the two or more kolboyniks in this thread and have a little fun. I had to hustle back from camp in order to attend a Bar Mitzvah for one of the boys. I always enjoy these - NJ, you folks really are just fascinating people! At one point I was singled out for recognition as a boy scout leader. I felt greatly honored and I was proud for the boy. Whenever I am infrequently asked to deliver some words of reverence, I quote from some of the early explorers who describe the new wonders they observe while giving thanks to the creator. (BTW, Bartram is one favorite of mine.) Often a person or two will approach me afterwards asking where they can read more. I am always happy to oblige. Back to the Bar Mitzvah...I'm not Jewish. Heck, I was called a 'mench' (mentsh, mensch?) several times before I knew whether that was a good thing or a bad thing, I was almost afraid to ask. Then I did a little reading and found some other terms to try to avoid (oy vey!). But afterward, we all stood around schmoozing and working up our appetites. Luckily (and I guess ironically) some of us were able to find enough chutzpah to schlep our appetites across the street to nosh on some pork barbecue. Mmmmm, wickedly good!

OGE, please oh please, I hope you're makin' that stuff up.

Tempted to remark on forests and trees, swamps and alligators, but the issue is simple. A fire alleged to be caused by some Scouts was costly to contain and extinguish. The law allows for recovery of those costs from those responsible. A settlement didn't happen so now a jury or a judge will decide. Let's just wait and see.

"I would certainly hope we don't sit around the campfire and bad mouth or promote Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals, the ACLU, various religions, etc. to the boys." SR540Beaver, I agree. Actually, around a campfire, I don't even like those subjects myself. I'd much rather talk about food, or girls, or movies, or food, or astronomy, or all the gross stuff inside organisms (not many other takers on that last one, though). Or food.

Come on, there are enough mispellings around these threads to paint everyone with a few, give him a break. Church (it sometimes seems to be Methodist)

Not so much age as the number of times they've been already. I expect some loss of interest after the 3rd time. High Adventure helps a lot, though.

"And concerning Feminazi....Rush never coined the phrase." In case there's a bit of confusion, Jason OK has a little 'crosstalk' with the topic on political party affiliation. I mentioned that Rush Limbaugh originated the term "feminazi" in a response to OGE. Here's an authority: http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Feminazi

A phone call is the last thing I want to engage in while camping (OK one of the last things, being consumed by a bear is a pretty big one too). Luckily, it isn't much of an issue, essentially no cell reception most of our destinations so the boys don't bother. Plus, as with the games and CD players, they mostly don't want to take the risk. Fat Old Guy, aren't you concerned they may take root and sprout new ones?(This message has been edited by packsaddle)

As I responded to the drop-dead-beautiful woman at the Atlanta airport who asked me if I was comfortable being searched by a woman, "Is this a trick question?"

Political Party Affiliation? Don't be a whimp!
packsaddle replied to Jason OK's topic in Issues & Politics
OGE, you probably knew this but in case you didn't, 'feminazi' is a Rush Limbaugh invention, at least that's who I first heard it from. And to turn the tables ever so slightly, I have seen a recent political ad in support of Bush that makes a comparison of equivalence of Hitler to Kerry, Gore, and other prominent Democrats. Just FYI. -
Nevermind, found it. You can save space in the future by merely posting the link: http://www.homestead.com/prosites-prs/14muslimconflicts.html

NJCubScouter, About the Wheeler thing...h'mmm, interesting thought. Jason OK, That last post was unusually lucid and well-written. What was the source for your plagiarism? Edited part, responding to Hunt: I share your sense of fairness in this. However, I am not sure how the BSA program would achieve the goal you articulate, given the highly variable views displayed in the volunteers who would actually bring the program to the boys.(This message has been edited by packsaddle)
