  1. Do a search on steel for knife blades. There are many sources of the different alloys and there are a few sites that compare the metal properties. I really like my very old Kbar Stockman. The blade holds a great edge. But so does my newer Gerber. There is still some inferior SS out there but if you're willing to pay for it, there are some amazingly good SS alloys available. You DO have to shop around carefully.
  2. I almost exclusively use Firefox and have never had a problem. I also use Chrome on the same computer and no problems with that either. I've also used Safari, no problems, but I just haven't seen the need to use it. I try never to use IE. Bloatware. Mozart's posts have been illuminating though. Thanks. I'm enough of a neo-Luddite probably never to want to use a lot of the finer features of this new forum structure. But in time I might be persuaded to the dark side, I suppose....I could learn to love IE, and Microsoft, hell could freeze over....
  3. " it should be clearly spelled out in the guidelines like all the other rules." NJ, did you seriously just write those words? Really?
  4. OK, sometime soon I'm going to the public area of the library computers and create the most amazing spoof account. AND I'm going to just let you guys guess about who it is, lol. This is going to be fun.
  5. As for the gender switch...you can just forget that noise. I'm not switching MY gender!
  6. "He offered it to everyone listening." Man, that was your chance to eat a handful, fake a heart attack, and cause near panic in the guy's mind.
  7. The appearances of most websites often vary with different browsers. I'm also using a Dell notebook with those browsers but I'm using W-7, not XP. The second account thing, as I remember, was not allowed in the past and even now I suspect I'll have to create that 'dummy' account from some other IP address in order to make it work. As for gender, here's what's going on: The moderators are the only members of the forums whose gender identity is unambiguous. Draw your own conclusions.
  8. He may have thought he was doing you a favor by extending the transition. Just thank him for all he's done and tell him you think you're ready to complete the transition quickly. That's the truth, isn't it? He deserves the truth.
  9. Perishables were refrigerated and the next troop meeting (usually a day or so later) then included some work on cooking skills, depending on what was left and how much. Everything else was stored safely until the next outing.
  10. I have not noticed any such problems. I'm using W-7 with both Firefox and Chrome. No problems so far. Haven't tried it yet with a tablet or smart phone.
  11. Sounds like a great project! What I found interesting was this, "...Including purging of old materials..." I would have thought they would want to keep the old materials. Isn't that one of the functions of a library? Edit to add: Maybe I'm more sensitive to this because I'm getting close to being one of those 'old materials' myself.
  12. Those steep hills just allow us to enjoy those passing moments a little longer. The thinner pads? Well, we're less susceptible to pain by now, I hope, lol. I have one of those shrunken uniforms too. But...never had that hair!
  13. OK, what is the world's ugliest bunny?
  14. You're welcome, I can't begin to imagine how much work it must have been to redo all this. However....According to my computer, the Support subforum is locked. And after checking the time zone, the time is still off by 8 hours. I'll check again.
  15. OK did the time zone thing. Let's see how it worked. Edit: Oh well, back to the drawing board.
  16. OK, I can see already that somewhere there is a clock problem, lol. And I'm certain it isn't my computer.
  17. I have to admit that when I first worked through this new format and structure I was apprehensive that the reaction in the forums would have some negative components. But as I worked through the trail run earlier today, I realized that not only is this faster, it is more intuitive and it seems not to have the 'bugs' out of the box the way the previous forum software did. So I am very optimistic about this and I hope everyone will look for the bright side while taking a little extra time to climb the learning curve. As always, I am thankful to Scouter Terry for providing this forum for everyone. Thanks Terry.
  18. "...we let the boys know that they were representing not only themselves, but the church that we are chartered to as well as the leaders and Boy Scouts in general." Reminds me of one of my best memories: on our way to the Keys, stopped at a fast food place for a quick breakfast before we got back on the highway. The boys were being boys, sticking straws up their noses, or sometimes a tatertot, and I spot two girls about the same age with their moms sitting at a nearby table...totally engrossed in the spectacle unfolding before them. I walked over and asked the moms if it would be ok to say something to their daughters. They agreed. They had no idea what I was about to say. I looked at the girls and said, "you see those boys over there?", we all stared at them with horrified fascination...and then I said, "Someday, you're going to marry one of those." the look on those girls' faces was priceless. The moms were snorting coffee out their noses.
  19. I had a friend who wrote on his job application about his Navy years, "keeping the world safe for Democracy" and "about 5 cents an hour". They kicked it back and asked for serious answers. He eventually got the job.
  20. Yes, that was a plucky thing to do. I give him a tremendous amount of credit. 12 Years old and making Christie dance, nice. Now if only the permitting process could see its way....
  21. Hemlocks? The woolly adelgid may have something to say about that.
