What would you do with a Scout that does not like camping? He likes the rest of the program, he just does not like sleeping in a sleeping bag, sleeping outside in a tent, etc. He does go with us when we do cabin camping, just not with tents.(This message has been edited by OldGrayOwl)

Not yet, but I will be soon.

100 Years From Now One hundred years from now It will not matter What kind of car I drove, What kind of house I lived in, How much I had in my bank Nor what my clothes looked like. One hundred years from now It will not matter What kind of school I attended, What kind of typewriter I used, How large or small my church, But the world may be ... a little better because... I was important in the life of a youth. Source: Forest Witcraft, "Within My Power", Scouting, October 1950, p. 2 Heres another one that I have used in Woodbadge Cermonies The Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole (1860-1934) An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening cold and gray, To a chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim- That sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned, when he reached the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide. "Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting strength in building here. Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way. You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide, Why build you the bridge at the eventide?" The builder lifted his old gray head. "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."

Can't tell you anything about Spencer, but we went to Safferan last year and it was cool. Good food, lot's of activities, a special program for 14+ called Lost Pine Patrol. (it is a special higher adventure program in association with Camp Spencer). Broad Creek Scout Camp is comprised of three camps, Camp Safferan, Camp Spencer and Camp Oest. Camp Oest is set up for Cub Scouts, while both Safferan and Spencer is for Boy Scouts. My troop is going to Spencer in May for a weekend canmpout.

What you can do, for a professional look, is to contact your local theatre lighting supply company, and tell them what you want. They have very realistic looking stage safe fires for rent. (yes, I know, you can do stuff with a light bulb and some crepe paper, etc., but why do it halfway?) Tell them that you want the artificial campfire effect, how large you want it to be, etc. They should be able to help you. I have used a company on the East coast for just that effect, and it looks great. If you want to build a smaller version for the future, check out this link: http://www.themebuilders.com/effects/howtobuildaartificialfire.html To purchase already made: http://www.luxa.co.uk/intro_page.htm http://www.djdistributors.com/torch%20lights.html http://www.littlebrightlights.com/site/1435548/product/V-0109 or the dogpile link so you can search for yourself: http://tinyurl.com/4lkngc (Note: the above links are NOT in any way endorsements for the sites, just some ideas where you can go for info). I'm sure that you will be telling people to: Sit down, you're rocking the boat (something I picked up from reading another thread) or don't flip the boat over and keep it upright. (This message has been edited by OldGrayOwl) -
How about invite them over for a cookout (make sure that everything can be prepared without power), then simply pull the main breaker to the house for the duration of your event.

The last time that I checked, NyQuil is not a beverage, but medication. BSA is concerned about the use of alcohol as a beverage, not IN medication. OGO

What we have been doing is to have a Pit Beef + Ham sale. $5.00/sandwich gave us a net profit of $900.00 after only 4 hours of selling, and we sold out of 100 lbs.!!! -
What patrol are you in?
OldGrayOwl replied to Knight's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training

How many here have tried this method: Take a couple of eggs, add cheese, onions, etc. to a ziploc type freezer bag and drop it into a pot of boiling water? In about 15 minutes, you have a nice meal. Right? Check out this link: http://camping.about.com/od/campingrecipes/a/ziplocbaggies.htm and let's discuss it.

Bear12, Where was your troop's SPL during the Court of Honor? It is "supposed" to be his program, not the SM's program. So, if there is to be a "fault" to be had, it woyuld be with the SPL, not the SM. Yuor SM said he forgot. Why not just leave it go at that and move forward? Like many others have said in this thread, a SM's one hour/week is a pipe dream. He is very busy and I can see where he just forgot.

What the Scouts do in our troop for the position of Liberian is to: 1 - Keep track of the merit badge books, make sure that they are signed out and in properly and to inform the Treasurer when books are lost, so that the Scout/Scouter that lost them are held accountable for the replacement costs. 2 - Give a talk once a month on some neat/cool/unusual/different merit badge and what is required to earn it. 3 - Go to the committee meeting at least two times during his term to tell them what books the troop would like to own or replace when they go out of date. In other words, the type of duties one would expect from a regurlar Liberian.
