Hi Lisabob, Our favorite Troop trips were, Philmont, Northern Tier, Seabase, Yellowstone/Grand Tetons, New River, Denali, and Grand Canyon. We like these places best because of all the natural beauty and number of activities available both there and along the way. Have plenty of photos if your Troop would like to see for themselves.

Welcome aboard, Carl. I'm glad you joined us, and thanks for volunteering to be a Scout leader. -

acco40, I think you deserve a raise. I recommend that we double your salary. -
What do you throw to a drowning lawyer? His partners.
-
David, On behalf of our Troop, please convey our condolences to Dominic's family.

What's brown and looks really good on a lawyer? A Doberman.

In my opinion, let the scouts decide, and then live with the results of their decision. It's for the scouts, not the parents. Good luck! Nobody ever said being a Scoutmaster was easy.

In a small town trial, the prosecuting attorney called an elderly woman to the stand and asked, "Ma'am, do you know me?" She replied, "Yes, I do. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you will never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you." The lawyer was stunned, but asked his next question, "Do you know the defense attorney?" "Why yes, I do. He has a drinking problem, his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state, and he cheated on his wife with five women, including your wife." The judge ordered both lawyers to approach the bench, and quietly said, "If either of you asks her if she knows me, I'll throw you in jail for contempt."

...or Jumbo shrimp. What's the difference between a dead dog in the road and a dead lawyer in the road? There are skid marks in front of the dog.
-
What do you call a lawyer gone bad? Senator.

Congratulations, ccjj. I know how proud you are of your new Eagle scout. We are, too!

Hey GW, I really hope that's not the case. I always enjoyed your perspective on everything. Quite refreshing!

my sons first backpacking campout
Ohio_Scouter replied to cad-guy's topic in Camping & High Adventure
Hi cad-guy, My fellow scouters have given you excellent advice already--especially that about borrowing gear before you buy. This will give you an opportunity to try the gear out and form your own opinions before you invest hundreds of dollars in expensive backpacking gear. Many of us are backpacking merit badge counselors, so I will refer you to your local scout shop to pick up and read a copy of the backpacking merit badge book for detailed guidance on backpacking and recommended equipment. If you'd like to see what Philmont Scout Ranch recommends for personal backpacking equipment, go to http://www.scouting.org/philmont. In my opinion, backpacking is the epitome of scouting. It doesn't get any better than that. Have fun! -

By the sounds of the flyer, I bet it has something to do with downhill skiing (swish, swish, swish). What do you suppose the other events are, i.e., A yetis breakfast delight, Tug-o-warm, Wheres Ralph, Sparkys swing? Sounds exciting! Let us know next week.

Not going to Council Camp = Not Supporting Council?
Ohio_Scouter replied to hops_scout's topic in Summer Camp
I'm sure that some BSA Councils do a very good job of supporting their units, and, in return, those units will support their local Councils by attending local Council summer camps and other Council-sponsored activities. However, there are other BSA Councils that do a very poor job of suporting their units, and some of those units don't feel the least bit obligated to support their local Council summer camps or other Council activities in return. Several years ago, our troop would attend our Council's summer camp program each year, but one year we found another summer camp operated by a neighboring Council within a couple hours drive that our scouts thought was much better than our local Council's camp. The facilities were better, the merit badge program was far more flexible, the dining hall and food were much better, the camp staff was much more motivated and accommodating, etc. As a result, by popular demand we began attending this summer camp each year. We tried to provide feedback to our local Council about the perceived deficiencies of their summer camp by completing their questionnaires and by talking with the Camp Director and staff, but nothing ever seemed to improve over the years. More recently, I belonged to a unit in a BSA Council which I asked to support us with funds for Philmont scholarships for scouts who could not afford the fees. The Council Executive told me to contact him later in the year when regional funds from the Waite Phillips scholarship funds became available. I did, and the Council never responded back. I interpreted this as Council non-interest in supporting our unit and some needy scouts. As a result, several scouts were unable to attend Philmont. The Council leadership still is stymied to this day as to why our unit doesn't support their activities. -
Sorry, tddbr00, I never heard of swish, swish, swish, either. If you want to know more about it, you might contact the Camporee Chairman at 513-734-1119 or 513-732-6106.

Brent, In my opinion, every effort should be made to accommodate both. Our troop would try to insure that both activities happened.

I spent way too much on Philmont last year. This fall, my son claims he needs a computer for college, so if anything comes my way, that's probably where it will go, or for tuition, or books, or room and board, or transportation, or etc. Now that he's made Eagle, I get to spend my discretionary funds on non-BSA stuff.

2008 Rank Requirement Changes - Info

Pack, They forgot to mention you ask that only if the victim is parking an aircraft and only if his face turns "read"; they don't say what to do if his face turns "blew". -
ASM915, Thanks for the invite. I'd love to, but I have some plans locally this weekend. Maybe some other time. We're originally from Cleveland, and we often head north to visit relatives. Where are you guys camping this weekend?
-
Fred, Sounds like your family needs to take a winter camping vacation. I'm sure we can accommodate you somewhere up here North of the 39th parallel. The forecast weather forecast for SW Ohio tomorrow night is now party cloudy and cold with a low temperature of 1 degree F.
-
Thanks, Lisa. Sounds like a good type of "problem" to have, but I guess you have to become more flexible as a result.

Thanks for the information, John. I guess I've been away from Cub Scouts for too long.
