ACLU threat causes Boy Scouts to drop public school ties
nldscout replied to fgoodwin's topic in Issues & Politics
I predict this will be a whole lot of NOTHING. When DOD stoped sponsoring troop and packs they were picked up by community groups within a month or so. So I don't think this will amount to hill of beans. The last thing we need is to get all wrapped up in this, eventually the ACLU will die a death of its own when public has had its fill of them. -
The reason given was simple. Rules and Regs get updated on a regular basis. The reason national refuses to sell copies is they don't want outdated copies floating around. See your CE and copy what part you need, its open to read. If you have ever read them they are about as dull as they get and mostly LAWYER speak.
-
T, If you try and order them, they will return your order and tell you to see your CE. They won't sell them to the public. I and several others have tried.

I am Male, and a SM, and I would do what Kristi said. Go, take the other Mom and have a great time observing and spending time with Adults. Don't let the old stick in the mud ruin things for your son. Don't interfere, but be there if your son has a real problem this time out. Makes ya wonder where these dinosours keep coming from

If you look at past threads on this you will find out that HIPPA does not apply to BSA. We are not a health care provider.

While most of us dislike cell phones (thank god where we camp they are useless) you cannot confiscate them. That according to the law is theft, even if you give it back. At the most the legal and proper thing to do is to instruct them to put it away and not use it. If a parent gives one to his child, taking it away is theft, plain and simple.

Can anyone tell me who makes the uniforms? There is no company name anywhere on my shirts or pants.

Vicki, A 16 to 18 yr old Boy Scout Cannot drive to any events that are not an area, regional, or national Boy Scout activity. That lets out all troop activities, trips, outings, everything. Narrowly construed it could also mean Troop meetings. A 16 yr old venturer can drive anywhere to anything if they meet those 3 rules

Torveaux Definatly use a drop cloth, anything will help. We always give cards and patches for this right away, then recognize them at Pack Meeting. This like any other temporary patch. You can wear one on the right pocket.

Any kind of softer soap works fine. And another thing, DO NOT do soap carving inside. You will have a real mess to clean up. We did it at a Cub Skills day in a school once and before we caught him the custodian hit the floor with a wet mop. So now we had wet soap chips. We helped him, but I think we mopped the floor 5 or 6 times to get rid of all the soap. Do it outside and saveyourself a lot of grief.
-
The only thing I would tell you is not to use Ivory. Use a softer soap, like dove. Ivory has a tendancy to crumble and break.

"That is when the DC told her, our CC, the Scouts aren't allowed to go to summer camp." No DC has the right to tell a troop who can go and who cannot go to summer Camp. That is a SM/Committee decision. Ok now to the problem, so the scouts went and visited a few friends. What does the SM say about it. If he has no issues then the CC needs to be told to "Back Off", the SM runs the program and if he see's no problem then there should be no issue for the CC to discuss. Sounds to me like the CC needs to cool off and get a grip. Under "Youth membership responsibilities", What is that, never heard nof such an animal.

Not to be a wet blanket on your event, But I noticed on the web site "P.S. Music will be provided along with a 50/50 raffle door drawing with great prizes to give away. " Raffles in scouting are forbidden. Has this been approved by council?

Let me put on my flame suit here and play devils advocate. What violations did he commit? Did the Boys sleep in a seperate room from the DAD? Was he one on one with the Boys? Doesn't appear so, therre were six boys. Was this a scout outing? Nope Were the Boys Scouts? Lots of unanswered questions in my mind that I would ask before I made an issue of this. Would I do it? Probably not at a scout camp, But havent we all been alone in our house with our sons and a group of thier friends? Have you ever taken your son Camping with some of his friends, I know I have. Some were scouts in troop, others were just friends. Was I the only adult? Some of the time yes. Like I said some may see this as a big issue, but without more info, I have to withhold judgement.

I have seen 12 yr old scouts that were more mature than a lot or 14-15 yr old ones. >"Well because the 12 year old can have a horrible experience living with a group of 14 to 17 year olds strangers for a week." Well we sent 10 1/2 and 11 yr old scouts to summer camp for a week with scouts they may only just barely know. We send them to the NSJ for 10 days clean across the country, so is this different? >"JLTC is a senior scout program designed for the mental maturity of senior level scouts." I wasn't aware we had "Senior Scouts". Is this a program just in your council or is this a national program that the rest of us haven't heard about yet? If the youth are finding your program " bad, boring, scary or whatever negitive experience", Then I submit your not following the training sylubus, because thats not the way the course is designed. I still think it should be the SM choice who he wants to attend, he is the best judge of youth in his troop. Sounds to me like you decide which 13yr old should attend even if the SM has signed him up. Am I reading that right?

I guess this is why G2SS says 16-18yr old scouts cannot drive to scout functions, except venturers

Background Checks & Identity Theft (please read)
nldscout replied to Marcheck's topic in Issues & Politics
Who do you think a lot of local law enforcement is using to do background checks? Well if you guessed Choice Point, you guessed right. The only thing a local check will look at is criminal activity, where CP looks everywhere. All the BSa is doing is asking CP for a check on this named person, living at this address, with this SSN. CP already has a file on you they are just pulling it up and looking at the info and forwarding it to BSA. Its not like the BSA is furnishing them any info they don't have already. -
I can tell you as SM that we forbid these types of card for all the reasons that Hunt has said. Once they start playing they don't want to quit. We have allowed them when we have game nights or special trips, but not regular caming trips. We did this because we had some scouts bring some and they got ruined in a rain storm. Parents were livid cause of the supposed value of the cards. I say supposed, because they are only of value to another player. I wouldn't personnally give you a penny for them.
-
Like I said, it should be a scoutmasters call who attends. If the SM thinks he has a 12 yr old that is mature enough and can handle it, why not send him. We have no age limit on Eagle. A scout can make eagle at 13-14 now, but has to be be the same age to learn to be a junior leader? A little late in my opinion. Let the SM who knows the youth deceide if they are capable.

Gift suggestions for Webelos crossing over to Boy Scouts
nldscout replied to GopherJudy's topic in Cub Scouts
1. A good pocket knife, with instructions they may not use it after crossover until earning totin chip card. 2. A headlight flashlight for reading in tent at night. -
Maybe I am wierd, because I like the BSA pants. I wear them all the time with my uniform. When they get a little raggedly I wear them to camp and places like that. I agree most of the youth don't like them, particulaly the shorts. As for the BSA uniform not being mandatory, it is in our troop. No uniform, no meeting. Sorry if you don't like our rule, but its what we wanted and the parents agreed and understand. If you was on the football teamand showed up without your uniform, you would sit on the bench all day.
-
My personnal opinion is Age should be what ever the SM determines is appropriate for the youth. We are seeing lots of 12yr old PL and APL. Why not train them younger so they can understand what is expected of a junior leader so they can come into a position know what a leader is supposed to do.

The General Services administration and the Department of Defense has a program to donate older computers to Schools and educational NON-Profits. Its called computers for learning. Our council has received many computers and I have helped 1 other council get into the program. After the council has satisfied it requirements they can start passing them down to units according to the priorities they sat

I have to agree on propane. We use it here in Northern New York year round with no problem.
