Crew203, I am betting that they put the tower in cause the Cell company offered $$$$ for the space. Its a good way for a camp to earn easy money if its handled correctly.
-
Torveaux Maybe its just New York that has obscure laws, but then again its New York. But we don't worry too much about it because up here in the adirondaks cell phone work so litttle they are hardly worth worrying about. Now if the New York city liberal tree huggers would leave the upsate residents alone we might get the cell companies to put in a few more towers. But thats a rant for another day!

My first question would be to define what your going to use the Scout Hut for. Is it a meeting hall or just a storage building or what?
-
Dug sorry your dead wrong on this about the SM having the right to confiscate items that are not dangerous or life threatening. There is nothing illegal about a cell phone, and you are NOT the guardian according to the law. You don't have to beleive me ask your local police department or ask your CO's lawyer.
-
Lynda et al, I would tell you that if you tell the scout to put the phone away , that is the limit of what you can do. Taking the phone is considered stealing if the parents want to push the issue. If you don't think so, just ask your local police chief or your CO's lawyer. Taking property from scouts that is not considered dangerous is theft, plain and simple. If a parent gives thier child a phone for emergencies, who are you to say they can't have it? Why pray tell do adults have a thing about youth having a cell phone, but see nothing wrong with an adult having one. Someone want to try explaining that one?

The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God* and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law * The word "God" can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one's spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word "God" with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate. It appears from this copied from GSUSA web site, That Reverence to your god is still part of program.

Parents MB Counseling their own youth
nldscout replied to John-in-KC's topic in Advancement Resources
VA, Where is the SM in the picture? No scout can start a MB without a signed MB Card approved by a unit leader. Is she a registered MBC for all the MB's? If she is not why is the troop accepting them? -
I would tell you it could be taken either way. Usually he is cooking for the Patrol, so someone else usually builds the fire other than the cooks.
-
Where is the COR here. They are the one to appoint the CC. If the COR has appointed him the CC then you have lost this battle. Maybe its time to move to another pack or form a new one.

LV Have you seen the names of these 100 people? Were they on your charter? Sounds like GAC all over again. As for moving, Is that possible if the boundries are set by national? -
Religious Emblem approved for Unitarian Universalist youth!
nldscout replied to Trevorum's topic in Working with Kids
I am not a UU nor have any intention of becoming one. I would however say that the debate about who in the UU church can issue a religious medal would be better discussed among UU church members on the UU list. -
The second largest Chartering Organization as a general rule does not allow females to camp with the troop's or allow female leaders. Anyone care to guess which group this is?

Parents MB Counseling their own youth
nldscout replied to John-in-KC's topic in Advancement Resources
As a SM, if I had a choice of 2 MBC I would send a youth to MBC other than a youths parents. Only because part of MB work is exposure to adult's. But if all I had was one MBC, I would use him/her without hesitation. -
Alternate Swimming Requirement for First Class
nldscout replied to SMT376Richmond KY's topic in Working with Kids
SM376, In rereading the original post you stated he passed second class requirements. So if he did that why would you ask for a waiver athis point. He just passed 2nd class, why the rush to seek the easy way out. I would say the youth needs to work on swimming for a lot longer before I would ask for a waiver. Whats the rush? -
I would ask whet the laws are for the state you are in. In the state of NY unless you are a licensed medical professional it is against the law for you to dispense drugs. We make sure we know when the youth is supoposed to take it, but he must hold the pills in his possesion, we don't control them.

Alternate Swimming Requirement for First Class
nldscout replied to SMT376Richmond KY's topic in Working with Kids
SM376 BSA does NOT consider fear of water a disability. Thats what the doctor must certify that the you has a disability. Most doctors will not sign a statement saying this youth has a disability with some testing and other action on thier part. You are asking them to label this youth. Why quit trying at this point. We have had youth that took a couple of years to pass swim test. I say keep on trying. Scouting again, I would ask for a waiver if you think the youth deserves to do the High adventure trip. But maybe you will be lucky and not have to. -
Alternate Swimming Requirement for First Class
nldscout replied to SMT376Richmond KY's topic in Working with Kids
This is what must be done to get a waiver. Alternate Requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class Ranks. A Scout who is unable to complete any or all of the requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, or First Class rank because he is physically or mentally disabled may complete alternative requirements if the following criteria are met: 1.The physical or mental disability must be of a permanent rather than a temporary nature. 2.A clear and concise medical statement concerning the Scout's disabilities must be submitted by a physician licensed to practice medicine. In the alternative, an evaluation statement certified by an educational administrator may be submitted. The medical statement must state the doctor's opinion that the Scout cannot complete the requirement(s) because of a permanent disability. 3.The Scout, his parents, or leaders must submit to the council advancement committee, a written request that the Scout be allowed to complete alternative requirements for Tenderfoot, Second Class, or First Class rank. The request must explain the suggested alternate requirements in sufficient detail so as to allow the advancement committee to make a decision. The request must also include the medical statement required in paragraph two above. The written request for alternate requirements must be submitted to and approved by the local council prior to completing alternate requirements. 4.The Scout must complete as many of the regular requirements as his ability permits before applying for alternate requirements. 5.The alternate requirements must be of such a nature that they are as demanding of effort as the regular requirements. 6.When alternate requirements involve physical activity, they must be approved by the physician. 7.The unit leader and any board of review must explain that to attain Tenderfoot, Second Class, or First Class rank a candidate is expected to do his best in developing himself to the limit of his resources. 8.The written request must be approved by the council advancement committee, utilizing the expertise of professional persons involved in Scouting for disabled youth. The decision of the council advancement committee should be recorded and delivered to the Scout and his leader. The council committee responsible for advancement must then secure approval of the council executive board. The Scout executive must attach a letter to the application indicating that the executive board has approved the application. The candidate's application for the award must be made on the Eagle Scout Rank Application or Quartermaster Award Application and recorded on the Advancement Report form. In the application of these policies for Scouts with special needs, reasonable accommodation in the performance of requirements may be made. These may include things such as the extension of time, adaptation of facilities, or the use of equipment or necessary devices consistent with the known physical or mental limitations of the handicapped individual. It is urged that common sense be employed. -
Alternate Swimming Requirement for First Class
nldscout replied to SMT376Richmond KY's topic in Working with Kids
The only one that can grant a waiver is the Council Advancement Committee, and only if it is documented for medical reasons. Fear of water is not justification for a waiver. Troops and Districts can no longer grant a waiver. -
We just cutt a pile of poles for klondike. We asked a landowner that had his land logged off about 5 or 6 yrs ago and it needed some thining. Why pay for something thats free. Let the boys help cut and trim them.(This message has been edited by nldscout)

Lynda, Hand Warmers in Texas? I never go camping in winter time here in NNY with out some hand and foot warms, the chemical kind. Works great and has saved many a scout from frostbite.

2007 World Jambo -- how to sign-up?
nldscout replied to fgoodwin's topic in Scouting Around the World
The US contigent is deceided by National not your local CE. You need an application, but they won't be out until after the NSJ this summer. They don't do anything to distract from the NSJ. Rumor has it the cost is going to be around $4000 per person again. -
Whats amazing is that they wouldn't welcome the ladies along. I mean really, If you got a couple of moms, the Dads can sit around while the ladies Cook, fetch water, wash dishes, and Cut Firewood for the Adult patrol. Boy, thats great, all us guys wopuld have to do is make coffee(only because men make better trail coffee), tend the fire, and tell tall stories. Sitting here with a VBG, while sipping my wifes coffee.

An Area in scouting is a Part of the region you are in, like an administrative district. In the Northeast Rergion where I am there are 4 area's. The OA uses area boundries to determine what section you are in. The only area events that I know of are those OA section events, like conclave.
