Let me add a little bit to what KS has said. It is a very good program. the main drawback is the State office that you must work through. On the State agency for Federal surplus can draw from DRMS. Some states are more restrictive than others. In the Case of NY they are fairly easy to work with. I screen the Local DRMS office for 3 councils in the local area. We have drawn thousands of dollars worth of equipment for them and local troops. But like KS said you have to be picky sometimes and look the stuff over good.

Where is the Forum For SCOUTS?
nldscout replied to SeattlePioneer's topic in Open Discussion - Program
If scouts want a forum, why are they not asking? Tell us Seattle, why are you as a scoutmater concerned about the scots having a separate forum? -
Where is the Forum For SCOUTS?
nldscout replied to SeattlePioneer's topic in Open Discussion - Program
I think a closed forum is a bad idea. What is being discussed that cannot be discussed in an open forum? -
Hey, Why can't old ladies dig trenches?
-
They have this program because at 12 a young man in the LDS church starts in the Arronic Priesthood which the LDS church uses the BSA as part of the priesthood training program.

I am curious just what is your position in the troop? There is nothing wrong with making 18 yr olds ASM's, But you need to guide and train them also. is he scheduled for training?.

I would challange anyone to show me where it says that a Troop and a Crew cannot sharethe same camp site.

In NY as in most states it is illegal to hand cash over to a youth if it was raised under the umbrella of boy scouting. A non-profit must account for its money. One of the local troops used to hand each boy a check at the end of the year with the intention that he use it for camp but a number of the youth didn't go to camp but kept and spent the money. That was a big NO NO when someone with accounting background found out. Leftover funds go to troop.

Observation vrs Participation
nldscout replied to scoutingagain's topic in Open Discussion - Program
What kind of High Adventure trip is it? Is there room for him if he could handle it? My answer to parental observation on a resticted trip is if you insist on going when ther is no slot for you or you cannot physically handle it, you need to deceide if your going to allow your son to attend without you because there is no way to observe a trip like philmont. Isn't it ironic, the G2SS says all scouting activities are open to parental observation, and NONE of the 3 national high adventure bases, nor the NSJ allow for it! -
Looking for Porcupine Patrol members
nldscout replied to my3sons1295's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Eamonn, National only allows the 8 current names to be used. If you want to use another name it would take approval from national. Our course director tried and was turned down flat. I wonder who approved using this name? I suspect it wasn't. -
Looking for Porcupine Patrol members
nldscout replied to my3sons1295's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
In your origonal message you said "In honor of him my fellow patrolers and I have been named the Porcupines." So you are or are not the porcupine patrol? -
The most important thing to keep in mind, what we wear on out uniform and what the military wears is by definition NOT a flag. It is a patch, plain and simple and could be sewed on any way you choose.

Looking for Porcupine Patrol members
nldscout replied to my3sons1295's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
Is this a nickname for your patrol? My understanding is that you are only allowed to use one of the 8 official patrol names for WB. Any course directors out there want to clarify this for me? -
If this was a trip where the troop was camping in same campsite, no one would think twice about going with 3 leaders. So why is this different?

Married couple as adult leaders on a campout
nldscout replied to jark's topic in Camping & High Adventure
There is no rule against it. I would say since its summer camp where there are lots of adults agound I would be ok if there was no other choice. -
I think 3 leaders at a central HQ's is enough. It meets the 2 deep requirement. The patrols don't need to be that far apart, have them move in a little closer is all.
-
Semper, Its funny how you and others say a troop cannot get an EIN to open bank accounts when our troop has one and has had it for years
-
They are no longer printed is what I was told last time I asked.

Our OA rep coordinates and assist the OA election team to conduct the elections. Your right E, this is a big part of the OA rep's responsibility.
-
NWScouter There ae only 2 ways for an adult to attain membership in the OA if he was not elected as a youth. 1. Is to be nominated by the Troop you are a member of. 2. Be nominated as a member of the District committee if your primary membership is District. If your primary scouting position is in a Pack, troop or Crew, Then this does not apply.

Pink Flamingos, A Legitimate BSA Fund-raiser ?
nldscout replied to Greeneagle5's topic in Unit Fundraising
Sounds to me like your a "renting" the flamingo's for a day or what ever the peroiod specified on the agreement is. I would see nothing wrong with this. Sounds like a novel idea. Where does it say a troop cannot rent its equipment out? We have in the past and will again on a periodic basis when asked. -
Yes, CAC board deceided to sell it.
-
First to answer John, the Bsa committed to update all of the MB books over a 5 or 7 yr period starting in 03, so we will see a lot change over the next couple of years. meamemg, Its not unusual for the requirements to be updated after the book is published, thats why you need a new requirements book each year.

Can Voters in OA Elections really abstain?
nldscout replied to jackmessick's topic in Order of the Arrow
If the election was properly carried out and documented then there is no grounds to void it. If the SM felt at the time it was flawed due to irregularities then was the time to void it. The boys voted, just cause you don't like the results does not mean you get to void it. I hope the Lodge holds firm on this or the boys will get a bad lesson from this -
This is a SM's call as to what counts not CC. Hotdesk, According to the National OA this is always a SM decission, so your LEC wasted a lot of time debating a rule that already was in place.
