  1. Looking for some information from those that may have it. Question came up reference on of our Camping facilities. a. Does your summer camp make a profit based on Camper fees from summer camp? b. Does the budget for camp include funds to pay for non-summer camp expenses that it cost to keep camp open during off season, like electricity, water, or in our area snow plowing? c. Does your overall camping program break even based on Camping fees collected? Thanks Paul
  2. well I don't know about the rest of the people here but I can tell a one when I see one. Seems your trying to hide it and not admit what you are. I would tell you that if you was in our troop and you worked there you wouldn't be in our troop anymore
  3. First let me be clear, I love hunting and all thats accociated with it, that includes the killing part. Its part of hunting, if you feel bad about killing, then you need to find a new sport. That being said if you have never seen the way wild predators kill other animals, you would be in for a treat. Man is extremely humaine compared to wolves or coyotes. Atleast we kill our aniimals before eating them. Since I live in the county in NY that has the highest Car to Deer accidents and have had 2 cars destroyed by deer, I wish hunters would kill more of them.
  4. As I am an avid hunter, I must say I hope this doesn't turn into a PETA loving, hunter bashing discussion. That said, I love hunting and also fishing. Here in Northern New York, we measure the year by the sporting season. Jan starts Ice fishing, then its bullhead fishing season, then Bass/summer fishing, finally hunting season. Most of us that hunt and fish here are nothing like those hunting situations prairie mentioned. We hunt for The exercise, love of outdoors, companionship, and yes we hunt for the meat also. Come with us on a typical weekend, we walk 2-4 miles a day, covering many area's. We work for every animal that we shoot. While I appreciate that some do not like to hunt, please do not criticize those of us that do. Its our sport that we have choosen, just like some like watching football.
  5. Lisabob, Your statement about not being covered if you do something dumb or wrong is incorrect. BSA's position on Liability and Supplemental medical is they will always cover you no matter what dumb things you do. They have to inorder to protect themselves. After they ssttle the issue, they may give you the boot, but you will always, without exception be covered. This is a direct quote from BSA legal department when we sent an inquiry to them a number of years ago.
  6. All leaders are covered regardless of being trained or not trained

    Recharter

Depends on you council, you need to ask them.
  8. This isn't BSA's choice. Adobe own the software that allows you to do this, so unless they change Acorbat reader to allow saving info. The only way would be to make the forms available in another format like MS Word. But then you would have to buy that. So until Adobe changes its marketing philosphy, we are all stuck with what you have.
  9. I will look, but I think we have them for our small 8 canoe and our larger 16 canoe trailer. The committees idea on liabilty is strange as a commerial one can break also.
  10. The only way is to ask. But let me give you an axample of what can happen. A few years ago we took scouts hiking for day. Where we started out and ended there was no group size limits, as far as we knew we were good to go on the trail, thats why we picked this area. As we were a little ahead of schedule we looked at map and there was a side loop that added an extra mile to hike. We polled the Scouts and they were game for the extra bit as there was some interesting sights on the loop. It wasn't until we were almost out that we ran into another couple of hikers who informed us that the side trail was in the High Peaks area and had a limit at that time of 12. It was that easy to cross bounderies and there were no trail markings. Now in the story that started this, it appears they may have been warned several times, if that is true, then shame on them. When we were told we left the area, they apparently just deceided to hike on. That in its self is dumb as they should have figured that the ranger would check on them later, and they did.
  11. Fred, The problem with the area mentioned is there are mulitple rules on group size with in a mile or 2 of where the group was stopped. In the High peaks part of the Adirondaks there is the limit mentioned, go a couple miles down trail, limit is greater, go 2 miles the other direction on to Paper company land and rules are different again. Sometimes its a mess trying to figure out where the lines are.
  12. Fishsqueezer SM and ASM cannot searve on any BOR's, Eagle or otherwise. What he may be talking about is as SM, I sat in on many Eagle BOR's. I was there to introduce the Scout and to clarify any issues the board may have. (Never did have any issues)
  13. Dan, I am afraid you have missread the G2SS. Boy Scouts are not allowed to drive to troop functions at all untill they are 18. From the G2SS: 4.The driver must be currently licensed and at least 18 years of age. Youth member exception: When traveling to and from an area, regional, or national Boy Scout activity or any Venturing event under the leadership of an adult (at least 21 years of age) tour leader, a youth member at least 16 years of age may be a driver, subject to the following conditions: Six months' driving experience as a licensed driver (time on a learner's permit or equivalent is not to be counted) No record of accidents or moving violations Parental permission granted to the leader, driver, and riders Troop outings do not meet these requirements.
  14. First off, all of you that are questioning the commitee's decision not to prorate dues are dead WRONG! The committee thought this through and made a clear decision, thats thier option and not ours to question or denigrate them. The other 17 W2's paid, so why should this family be different. Treasuremom, I think you did a bad thing by taking the moiney from another parent, you should have held your ground and not done it. Now in the future she will asssume that if she throws a fit she can get things her way. I suspect someone in the troop they will be joining will suffer in the future for this.
  15. Eamonn, While Kayaking is authorized for 13 yr old Boy Scouts, I would not allow a younger sibling to go on this trip if he was not old enough to be a crew/ship member. what would you do if other 13yr scouts want to participate? If the Crew/Ship is doing a joint activity then by all means include all of them. If they don't meet age requirements for membership and trips like this, don't do it.
  16. We did internet rechartering, worked well and allowed different COR's for Pack and Troop. The issue of voting rights at council meetings is totally seperate from COR's on Charters. It doesn't have to be the COR to vote, it could be the IH.
  17. our council says 1 COR per charter. And since the troop and pack have different charters then they say its ok.
  18. It would depend on the activity. The prospective member rule does not apply to youth who are under the age limits allowed for that group, on top of that they are already registered Boy Scouts. Canoeing and Kayaking are fine for Boy Scouts, pistol shooting is not allowed, unless you are a Venturer.
  19. I don't know if its legal, but our pack and troop shas had different COR's for years. I looked at back charters for last 15 yrs and they were always different.
  20. I think the problem is that the wording for this hasn't changed in many many years. When it was wrote summer camps didn't have cabins, lean-to's, adirondacks or other permanant structures. Our camp has several sites with these. The reason they have been converting is they are far cheaper in the long run than tents that are expensive, leak and don't last long.
  21. Can anyone show me in writing where a troop cannot set a minimum attendance policy? No you cannot. There is no reference anywhere in the books or manuals that say you cannot set a minimum. We use attendance as a measure of scout spirit, not for the longevity requirement for advancement. If you cannot commit to the troop without a valid reason, then my take is your lacking in Scout Spirit.
  22. I don't see what the big issue people have with giving out SSN. Just about everyones SSN is out there on the internet somewhere. If someone wants your ID they can get it and all kinds of other info so easy its pathetic.
  23. A troop committee can require uniforms in order to participate in its programs. There is nothing in BSA literature that says otherwise. I would ask the parent to explain this to me as SM and the CC, then leave it up to the committee to deceide what the proper course of acton is. Did they just join a new church or what?
  24. Here in the Northeast we would want Blaze Orange for Fall uniforms so it would be safe to walk in the woods
  25. Long Haul, Surly your not saying that those who took the other woodbadge course are better scouters than those that nook the present course?
