Fines for Untrained Leaders
nldscout replied to CNYScouter's topic in Wood Badge and adult leader training
CNY, I think you and I know our council said that they won't recharter units if the principal leader is not trained, however in the 2 northern districts the last poll we did was that 50% of the leaders were untrained. So with the councils numbers going down already do you really think they will dump 50-75 units? -
Yes the new treated lumber does not use arsenic, however ask your self this. If you use plain nails, not galvenized or ceramic coated screws the chemicals will eat the nails in a year or two. So which is worse? Arsenic or something that eats steel?
-
Has anyone heard of a council that was created from merging of 2 councils being broken back up or un-merged back to its origonal 2 councils? Anyone know if this is possible?

CNY NEWS FLASH, Hiawatha Seaway Council in NY deceided last night to close and sell its smaller dining hall camp(Portaferry). With the money they intend to build a new dining hall at the camp that does patrol cooking(Sabbattus. Go figure. The mutiny in NNY already started today. The camp that is closeing is down about 100 youth over the last 2 yrs. The other camp is down close to 300 from last year, lost 80K this year from breaking even, failed it accedidation inspection so miserably that NE Region threatened to close it. But the Urban crowd from Syracuse just deceided to close the smaller one cause its not "thier" camp. They just effectivly killed scouting in NNY for years. Patrol cooking camps in NY are a dying breed because the state Health Department doesn't like them.

CNY, they probably will be terrible as cold weather pants. Of course the old ones were too. buy a pair of wool ones for winter time, you can order them in a green that almost matches BSA green.

Cradle of Liberty Council loses land deal with Philadelphia
nldscout replied to MarkNoel's topic in Issues & Politics
My guess is that this is only the opening scene of another protracted court fight. If they were given free use in perpituity, and have it in writing then its likely they may win this battle. either way, its long from being deceided. -
How long can boys take to complete a merit badge?
nldscout replied to funscout's topic in Advancement Resources

Trackers test new rescue technology
nldscout replied to fgoodwin's topic in Equipment Reviews & Discussions
There are a couple of problems with PLB's that I see. 1. You have to turn it on if your lost. 2. In the case of these from council, its got to have good batteries and has to work properly 3. They give untrained people a sense of security to go into places they have no bussiness being. As an example of #3 a gentleman, not much woods experiance went into the Adirondacks in the spring here a year or so ago, had a PLB with him. Had no proper gear and got caught in a spring snow storm. Activated his PLB when he figured he needed help. This caused the S&R people to go into high gear, to find him and extract him via helicopter in bad weather. Cost of rescuein the thousands. Individual recovers goes home, deceides he wants his canoe and gear that was left behind, so he goes right back to same place alone. Gets lost again in another storm. What does he do, why activate his PLB again. Again S&R goes into high gear in bad weather to rescue the same dummy from almost the same spot. When questioned why he went back, his response was, I wasn't worried I had my PLB, I knew they would rescue me thats what they (S&R) get paid to do. As more and more of these get spread around people will be doing more dumb things like this and S&R staff's will be run ragged rescueing the idiots. -
Lost Eagle records for transferred Scout
nldscout replied to Trevorum's topic in Advancement Resources
If this scout transfered, didn't you get tranfer records with him? You should have, especially now that there is so many automated troop record programs out there. As far as a councils records, everyones records sre on the same Data Base(Scoutnet) at national. Cuncils don't keep seperate records they access the SN database and enter info so if it was entered in old council it should be on record. When we have a a scout atain LIFE rank we ask council to give us a scout printout of his awards and badges so we can make sure there is no last minute glitches. Your registrar can run individual ones of one report on whole unit only takes seconds to do. -
gwd-scouter is correct on venturers but it must be worn on the Kelly Green shirt only.
-
ED, and all, Why would you sent the troops copy of the Blue card to council? Its the troop copy not thiers. Thats what the advancement report is for. So what is your council going to do when they are converted to electronic reporting of advancement?
-
Funscout, I can't imagine why OA ceremony would take anywhere near that long and if its hot and they , those running ceremony, should no better than to subject young scouts to standing there with allowing them to drink. When the first scout is injured or worse dies from a heat injury, then the fingerpointing will start. When I was SM I always made sure the Ordeal candidates had water with then, I looked at that as part of my responsibility and I would have challanged anyone who yelled a a scout for trying to stay hydrated.

Acco40, The answer to your question is NO. Cubs can only use bb Guns an Council or district sponsored activities, regardless of in you have qualified instructors
-
Funscout, what council are you in?
-
The age differs from state to state because laws are different. In NY you must be 12, thats the state law here. So each council may be different.
-
what we did to squash this grey area letter was challange anyone who quoted it to produce a signed copy by a national or regional represntitive. No one has ever been able to. One DE attempted to follow up with council and region to no avail. BSA has lots of rules, this is just not one of them.
-
The problem with this document being used to define grey area's is 1. Its not an official document 2. No one knows who wrote it. We asked our NE region rep and they don't know. 3. It appears to be just one persons opinion, notice no one at national has ever issued anything like it. We have totally disregarded this in our area and when a CE brought a copy to a district Camporee planning meeting we politely said thanks but you can keep it. We can deceide for ourselves.

Lots of Council camps are located in another council bounderies. That is not unusual especially for urban based councils. So enlighten us as to what the issue here was?
-
Before I open court, I announce that people should turn off all cell phones. Seems like every person reaches for a phone to turn it off. Some look like I have asked them to cut off a hand or something.

The issue of Meds at a Youth Camp,(in NY that is anything over 72hrs) is regulated by the state, as it is in most states. You need to find out what the state policy is cause its going to differ where ever you are. Some states makes it the camps requirement some its the individual scouts. A lot of camps do not have a person who is authorized to issue MEDS so they may be breaking state and federal law by doing it.

Younger (than average?) Unit Commissioner just starting out
nldscout replied to jsii's topic in Council Relations
Age of commissioner shoulsn't matter it your experiance and attitude that matters. Of course, you need to buy a Official Red Wool Jacket and Campaign hat, then make sure you get your official UP ID card and Badge. With these items your ready to go. -
Fscouter, I have to disagree with you on this. Not all people on the sex offender registry are perverts. I just Sentence a young man on a charge of Sexual Misconduct. This is a registerable offense in our state. Let me give you some background. When the Issue started she was 15 he was 16. It continued for 2 years, once he was over 17 he become a criminal for doing this. They got caught in a public place and parents were embarrassed and pushed the issue. They both plan on getting married, however for the next 10 yrs he is a registered Sex offender. Is he a Bad person? How many of us did the same thing when we was young and our hormones were raging? So again I say, find out what it was he did before you comdemn him.
-
orennoah I have to disagree with you on this. There was no indication of any YP violation here. Only that a dad of a scout was on the list. Why would you elevate this and possibly raise an issue if you have no accusation against this person without knowing what is up with him. If you look on your state registry it will tell you what he was convicted of.
