  1. SPOILER ALERT The space money was kept and divided up amoung the countries, which used it for all sorts of big goodies. Until Finland decided to fess up, then Finland got nuked. As it turned out, the whole thing was a test of whether Earthlings were mature enough to join the Federation of Planets. Since they kept the money instead of giving it back, the FoP declared Earth irredemably selfish and stupid and quarantined it forever. And as for the space money, it was worthless. It was only worth what the users believed it to be.
  2. Between my Post office complaints, my travel history, and my FBI file, I'm surprised I wasn't mentioned by name.
  3. What does your son want???? Not you. Do that!!!!
  4. I saw the episode and was pleasantly surprised that Stan (?) was so bothered by his father's unScoutlike behaviour. He gave back his trophy because he couldn't live the lie his entire life.
  5. Eamonn, Do what you want to do, not what you think you ought to do because others don't want to. If anyone asks you to do a job you don't particularly want, come back with, "No, I don't think I'm up to it now. Have you asked, Bob, Jane, Ed, or Sara? I think they'd each be great in it." And let it go. 10% of the volunteers should not be doing 90% of the work. BTW, have you had a complete physical lately? If you've been feeling like too little butter on too big a slice of bread for nearly a year, there could be something up.
  6. I think it was a car. And, boy did they look goofy.
  7. Yes, the DL/COR could reveal himself to be a vengeful, petty, mean spirited little twerp. Or, maybe he could lavish all his time and attention on the SM and the Troop CC since he'll be swimming mostly in thier pond, hopefully. Let's just hope this was all some kind of calendar/communication misunderstanding and that there's almost a year to work it out. Everybody needs a little compromise.
  8. If your DL won't back down and be more cooperative, you can always smile and wave as he crosses over to the troop permanently. (Just make sure ALL of your DL positions are filled!)
  9. In the packs we've been with, the WEB IIs have their crossover ceremony usually in late winter/early spring to which the entire pack is invited. We've got the OA ceremony team out, and boys from the troops the WEB IIs are going to greeting them on the other side. In May, we have the crossover/rank advancement for the rest of dens. Maybe this is what your den leader is thinking of. If not, maybe you could sell him on it. I think it's really good for the littler Cubs to see what they can expect at the end of Cubs.
  10. OMG. You have considerably more patience than I do.
  11. Know why our troop has bylaws, rules, regs, etc? Parents. (And lawyers.) I prefer that adult leadership be there for Safety and Sanity as well as some older wisdom, resources, and interpretation of BSA policies.
  12. Whooooops!!! I meant 300 foot rule!!! Although my seven year old son might prefer being 300 yards from his six year old sister.
  13. Kudu, I'm thinking of instituting the 300 yard rule for my six and seven year old offspring. The yard's big enough, and it's spring.

    A real answer?

My son went through two pairs of the nylon pants in two years becuase he ripped out the crotches on each twice doing normal boy stuff: sliding in mud and jumping on a trampoline. I don't recommend them.
  15. If you have two dens of that age, maybe split the boys up. If the injured Scout's parents are still upset, you may have to face losing one or two fmailies.
  16. I agree that a parent needs to come along and be responsible for this. Treat this like any other serious medical condition which might need immediate intervention.
  17. I like the 100 points thing!! I'm saving it to my BSA files for the day I need it.
  18. Thanks for the reminder to poll the populace on what kind of pie to have for Easter. So far I have: Chocolate Key Lime Coconut
  19. If you need new den leaders, give them fair warning that as of June, the den leader will not be able to carry on. If no one has stepped up by June, that's when the CC and CM can come in and say, "Look, we need x numbers of den leaders. If you want to do it, or you know someone not in the pack who might be a good fit, give us a call or an e-mail. This is what we will do to help you. You won't be alone. But, if we don't have anyone in place by September, we can't let this den go on." You don't have to be mean about it, but put the truth out there.
  20. We are trending closer to the European model in which the bridal party stops off at the local equivalent of the mayor's admin building, gets hitched, and continues on to thier venue of choice for a religious ceremony, should they desire one.
  21. Good question. How can a Scout remediate universal bad recommendations? Sounds appealable to me.
  22. Gern's suggestion to increase the time in rank for Star and Life is an excellet way to slow down the parents and increase the likely maturity of Eagles. I have advised my son that a rank of year after 1st class is perfectly reasonable. There's no need to rocket thorugh life and miss the roses along the way.
  23. Good e-mail. Very neutral and polite. Send it ASAP. As for myself, I have to wonder if this is the hill your son's SM really wants to die on and why.
  24. I'm happy to do mandatory training, if it's reasonable in length, offered at multiple times and locations so I have some flexibility, and the cost is only for materials and yummies. But, we have about fifty adults registered in our unit, 15-20 SM/ASMs and the rest MCs. It's hard enough getting every MC YPT and Committee Member trained, let alone something they have to attend. Is this really soemthing the average committee member needs, or is it something only those who sign tour permits need? And, once again, I'll say that we need another category of adult volunteer called "Volunteer" VL.
  25. Eagle1982, What a great website! I know nothing about electronics, other than how to catch the classroom on fire with a lantern battery and steel wool, and just looking at what was sent in by readers made me want to make one.
